Wednesday Wishlist: Earthscrapers?

Here's a unique idea coming out of Mexico city that may allow Downtown San Jose to have 60 story buildings despite the proximity to the airport. The idea of an inverted skyscraper sounds crazy, but the mockups from the short video below are pretty amazing. Imagine something like this under St. James Park or Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

Thanks to Jason for the tip!

  1. My wish list for St. James Park is that the city leadership would do their jobs and clean up the Park so that tax-paying citizens can enjoy it. It's so completely disgusting. A huge wasteland of homelessness, drugs and petty crime.

  2. That's an interesting idea, but I don't know how well it would float here with earthquake potential. Maybe that issue is easily mitigated, I don't know enough about what happens underground during an earthquake. I'd imagine heating and cooling the space would be quite a bit cheaper.

  3. It would be expensive and provide little in terms of beautifying the city with nice buildings and architecture. Underground parking garages are a great idea, and maybe one lower layer for businesses, still accessible from the street though, but I doubt many people will want to live several stories underground, especially in a medium-density city.
