Santana Row Timeline

The 10 Year Anniversary of Santana Row is coming up this November and their marketing staff was kind enough to send over a historical timeline. Santana Row has become one of, if not the most successful mixed-use project in the world and that is surely something for us to be very proud of.

Particularly interesting in the timeline below is the part labelled "FUTURE." We knew about the 220,000sqft office building and 600 parking spaces, but what is new to me is the "Capstone Building" at the very end of the Row which will feature a plaza, additional retail, more office space, and underground parking. This will be visible from just about any point along the main street, so I'm expecting an impressive building to cap off one of the most active streets in San Jose.

  1. I remember that there were some renderings of the buildings to be built next to the Cinearts but I'm unable to find them anymore.

    1. Looks great, but I don't think this is up to date. I'll see if there are any new renderings.

  3. A few things to make Santana Row (and San Jose) even better:

A walkable connection from the West San Carlos area to the east on Stevens Creek Blvd, which can be accomplished in part by traffic signals at the 880 ramps as well as bike lanes. It's a little saddening that such a cool, walkable area as Santana Row is cut-off from the rest of the city by such auto-oriented road design.

Medium to high density mixed-use development along W. San Carlos, creating a "grand boulevard" from downtown to Santana Row (something akin to Wilshire Blvd in LA?), w/o loosing the character of the unique areas along W. San Carlos (Antique Row, Midtown, Burbank, etc.).

Better pedestrian-oriented connections to other features in the Santana Row area, such as Valley Fair, the movie theaters, and the Winchester Mystery House. Despite the density and proximity of things to do in the area, its still too car-oriented to function as a walkable community beyond the Row itself (which of course still mandates that one arrive at the Row by automobile, given the low-density residential neighborhoods surrounding the area and the lack of decent public transit).

And finally, the completion of the 523 bus rapid transit line from downtown.

    1. Completely agree with all of these. When Valley Fair expands it will have a better connection to Santana Row since they are planning to realign one of their main entrances with the Row. Also planned are several outdoor restaurants and shops (basically a tiny Santana Row leading into the mall).

    2. When will the Valley Fair expansion begin Josh? Where can I see the renderings/details about the project?

    3. ^^^ Yeah, I've been searching for info and renderings for the VF expansion as well. I only found renderings of the parking garages. Is it even still happening? Seems like a good time to break ground.

    4. I remember seeing the plans on renewvalleyfair.org but that website is now dead. Is there any other website with plans or an expected ground breaking?

    5. It is still going to happen but was delayed during the great recession. They will have to wait until after a holiday shopping season in order to break ground, so I'm expecting early 2014 but that is just a guess.

    6. It seems like it's farther off than 2014. 2 new restaurants just opened, if I'm not mistaken, right where the expansion was to occur. Also, I emailed Safeway to see when that eyesore was going to be leveled and replaced and they said there were no plans to do so in the near future. Unfortunately, I think we're a ways off.

  4. Does anyone have any news or updates with the Century 21/22/23 domes across from Santana Row? I used to see movies there often but the last time I went there a few years ago(the 22), it was obvious that they hadn't kept up on maintenance. The auditorium had a funky smell and the seats needed refurbishing.
Because of that I just assumed that the land would be sold for development. I imagine those parcels are worth big $$$. However, I just checked Fandango and it appears they are still showing movies.
So who owns this land? Will the domes ever be remodeled?
