On May 20, 2007, The article of NY Times' Travel section wrote that Downtown San Jose and Santana Row can coexist in the city of nearly 1 million. NY Times were totally right! Downtown thrives as an artsy and funky district with new addition of San Pedro Sq. Market, while Santana Row thrives as an upscale and stylish retail district where hip crowd hangs out. Sometimes some of those crowd comes to check out downtown and relax for an afternoon drink at one of the cafe's by San Pedro Sq. or hang out at Cafe' Fruscati in the SoFa District. San Jose is lucky to embrace two happening locales where people can go out and have a good time.Truth Policenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-83326230437688493492012-09-10T18:51:43.743-07:002012-09-10T18:51:43.743-07:00I think they can both coexist and I'm no longe...I think they can both coexist and I'm no longer entirely certain that Santa Row stunted Downtown's growth. Before SR Downtown was already in bad shape, and now 10 years later it is substantially better instead of declining further.

SR put San Jose on the retail map and that attention may spur retailers to locate in other parts of San Jose, especially now that SR is perpetually 100% leased and is not planning much more retail as part of the project. It is free advertising for the city as a whole.Joshua Santoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08146556924287585958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-6546502795222408252012-09-10T18:39:28.237-07:002012-09-10T18:39:28.237-07:00People don't live in malls, they don't wor...People don't live in malls, they don't work in them (besides the obvious retail jobs), and past high school they usually don't "hang out" for long periods of time in malls. So, I don't think it would be fair to call Santana Row a mall, especially when it is home to a lot of people. And if you do think of it as a home, compare the amenities that you have access to there to where you live today. It's a solid model for more urban villages in San Jose.Joshua Santoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08146556924287585958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-7067263503655815052012-09-10T18:24:02.772-07:002012-09-10T18:24:02.772-07:00Santana Row is beyond lame and going there only se...Santana Row is beyond lame and going there only serves to remind me how much is lacking downtown. I would never drag an out of town guest there; my friends and family have malls where they live too :)Jacknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-27815599931804416022012-09-10T16:26:12.987-07:002012-09-10T16:26:12.987-07:00I don't personally believe the two locations a...I don't personally believe the two locations are mutually exclusive. I want downtown SJ to succeed just as much as the next guy, but let's face it, Federal Realty would never have invested the money they did into downtown. Suburbanites want a clean, safe, welcoming environment with free parking and that's what Santana Row gives them. Santana Row is a travesty to the city of San Jose, and it certainly robbed downtown of its progress and vitality. They should never have built Santana Row, period!

One question: do you guys prefer a project like Santana Row or having a downtown that's healthy and vibrant?

Note* not too many cities have a vibrant downtown and having a happening place like Santana Row in another area of the city.Blue Dogsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-76989251769310003852012-09-10T10:27:13.306-07:002012-09-10T10:27:13.306-07:00Thanks for the jab Anon! Don't slip over them sour grapes when you pass out the door.

Seriously...some of you guys need to just lay it off with the haterade...

I like this article and learned quite a bit about the history of the Row. I know a whole host of folks don't care much for the place, what with its "uppity" and "snobbish" clientele, but at its core it's a GREAT place to take your guests, snobbish and non-snobbish alike.

All the out-of-town guests I've taken to the Row loved it!

All the non-SF folks that loves to call SJ the "glorified cow town" (I always get this from people from Mountain View and Sunnyvale, what gives haha!), I always give them the retort "We have the Row, where's your Row?" That always shut them up for awhile.

The place has revitalized San Jose's Midtown section, make no mistake about it.

Sorry for long rant :) 'Tis Monday at work :P Bobnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923860625279115418.post-10151518074859914842012-09-10T06:35:57.032-07:002012-09-10T06:35:57.032-07:00It's a mall. It's a mall.
