Music in the Park - Downtown San Jose - July 15th

The '80s are back on Friday, July 15th with A Flock of Seagulls and ABC's 40th Anniversary Tour. The show takes place from 5pm-10pm at Plaza de Cesar Chavez as part of the Music in the Park series.

Tickets start at $25. VIP tickets cost $75 and include an exclusive VIP beer & wine bar, a lounge area, VIP seating, and skipping the line to enter to event. If you just want to listen to the music, there is also the $0 option of walking around Downtown San Jose close to Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2021

One of Downtown San Jose's largest events is back this week. San Jose Jazz's Summer Fest runs Friday to Sunday with multiple stages and options for every budget (including $5 streaming passes for one of the stages). The main stage will be centered in Plaza de Cesar Chavez but various events and the overall atmosphere will encompass large portions of Downtown San Jose. It will be a fun weekend to be in the area even if you are not attending the full event.

Celebrate the Rebirth of “Live” at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, August 13–15. One of the first significant live music events in the Bay Area in 2021, the Fest reclaims its place as "one of the world's great urban jazz festivals" (DownBeat Magazine) with a more compact footprint centered on the Sobrato Organization Main Stage in the Plaza de César Chavez. Grammy Award hits at Music in the Park this season


San Jose shows include The Delfonics June 21 and Ozomatli July 19

Rising stars Cuco and J Boog also headline San Jose Downtown Association-produced shows

SAN JOSE – Airfield Supply Co’s Music in the Park presented by Metro summer concert season at Plaza de Cesar Chavez opens with two Grammy Award winners:

·      June 21 – The Delfonics (soul and R&B)

·      July 19 – Ozomatli (Latin rock)

·      Aug. 2 – Cuco (Alternative Latin)

·      Aug. 23 – J Boog (reggae fused with R&B, hip-hop and rock)

Shows begin at 5:30 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Tickets are $15 in advance for general admission, $35 for a VIP experience, $20 and $40, respectively day of the show and available at http://musicintheparksj.com

The Delfonics:  Love songs and oldies from these Philly soul pioneers, headed by William “Poogie” Hart, including classics “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time), which won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance, and “La La Means I Love You.”  The Delfonics inspired other ’70s groups such as the Spinners, and Stylistics.

Ozomatli:  Ozomatli brings their melting pot of global sounds and rhythms from LA to SJ, an intoxicating blend of Latin rock, funk, and hip-hop.  Ozo delighted Music in the Park audience two other times, in 2013 and 2016.  They have won Grammy Awards for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album twice for “Embrace the Chaos” and “Street Signs.”

Cuco:  Based in Los Angeles, producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Cuco exploded onto the scene via Twitter and social media, making music from his bedroom studio. His simple but catchy “Lo Que Siento” has more than 12 million streams combined on Spotify and Soundcloud.

J Boog:  Southern California native J Boog has built his musical career since his 2007 debut album “Hear Me Roar.”  His 2011 Backyard Boogie release expanded his following internationally, topping Billboard and iTunes charts in a number of countries. “Live Up!” earned him a Top 5 spot on the Reggae Albums charts in 2014.

Music in the Park is back for 2018!

One of the largest outdoor music events in the South Bay is returning this summer. Music in the Park 2018 features four different bands: Tony! Toni! Toné! (R&B) on June 22nd, Toots & the Maytals (Reggae) on July 12th, Third World with Jordan T. (Reggae) on August 3rd, and Malo (Latin rock and soul) on August 24th.

Super early bird tickets are available now for $10 per person and once those sell out, general admission tickets will sell for $15 in advance or $20 the day of the show. VIP passes with a drink ticket, free water, and private seating are available for $35. You can order them over here.

Blues Traveler visits Music in the Park on July 20

SAN JOSE – Blues Traveler, one of America’s favorite jam bands, headlines the second Music in the Park show of the summer on July 20.  The show starts at 5:30 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, off Market Street in the center of downtown San Jose. 

Blues Traveler, which has recorded 12 albums and sold millions of records, including a cache of top-40 hits such as “Run Around” and “Hook,” and a six-time platinum blockbusting album Four.  This is their 30th year in music.  Front man John Popper calls the band’s latest album, Blow Up the Moon “a misguided homage to The Beatles,” featuring a slew of guest artists.  Go to www.bluestraveler.com.

Openers include Ben Henderson and Friends plus special guest Socorra, both from San Jose.

  • Aug. 3:  Brenton Wood brings his chest of R&B hits up from Los Angeles to perform for his South Bay audience.  twitter.com/brentonwood Wood will perform in lieu of Bootsy Collins, who was previously announced but had to cancel for medical reasons.
  • Aug. 25:  WAR, self-described as “The Original Afro Cuban Jazz Rock Blues band.”  Hit parade includes “Why Can't We be Friends,’ “Low Rider,” “Cisco Kid,” “The World is a Ghetto” and more classics.  Eric Burden of the Animals co-founded the band in 1969. www.war.com

Four shows lined up for 2017 Music in the Park


First show June 23 features New Zealand’s Katchafire

SAN JOSE – Music in the Park kicks off its 28th season on June 23 with New Zealand-based roots-reggae rockers Katchafire.
Also, save these dates:

  • July 20:  Grammy-winners Blues Traveler, celebrating their 30th anniversary
  • Aug. 3:  Brenton Wood
  • Aug. 25:  The headliner has to be announced in June, but this featured band has earned 17 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards and is self-described as an “original Afro Cuban jazz rock blues band.”

Local artists will open each show at 5:30 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, off Market Street in the center of downtown San Jose.

Advanced tickets are $10 per adult and free for 12-under when accompanied by an adult.  Tickets and information are available at www.musicintheparksj.com. Day-of-the-event admission will cost $15 per adult.

June 23: Katchafire - The five-piece all-Maori band formed in 1997 is regaled as one of the most cherished, original live reggae bands in the world.  Roots reggae artists at their core, Katchafire also integrates R&B, funk, dancehall and pop themes into their live playing.  Most recently they put out a single Burn it Down and offered Stir It Up on a recent tribute to Bob Marley, in the wake of four studio albums, multiple awards and platinum sales. www.katchafire.co.nz

July 20:  Blues Traveler - One of America’s all-time favorite jam bands.  Says frontman John Popper:  “Three decades and I am still surprised when we play and find some rich new musical vein to tap. Three decades and I cannot believe my luck with this band of brothers and this string we have run.”

Blues Traveler has recorded 12 albums and sold millions of records. They hit it big with their 1994 release, “four,” which included “Hook” and the Grammy-winning  “Run Around.”  Their latest release, “Blow Up the Moon,” (2015). http://www.bluestraveler.com/

Aug. 3: Bootsy Collins – Funk royalty, bassist Bootsy Collins has worked with everyone from James Brown to Hank Williams, Jr. and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk) with George Clinton. His big break occurred in 1970 when James Brown hired a new backing band, which was called The JB’s. Collins played on several of Brown’s biggest songs recorded that year.  As a solo artist and leader of Bootsy’s Rubber Band, his songs climbed the U.S. R&B charts for almost 20 years, reaching the pinnacle with 1978 No. 1 hit Bootzilla.

Tower of Power performs Aug. 25 at Music in the Park




Show opens with popular local band Super Soul Brothers

SAN JOSE – Tower of Power returns to Music in the Park on Aug. 25.

Acclaimed for its five-piece horn section, Tower of Power tours the world each year, playing hundreds of dates and pleasing their audiences with a parade of funk and soul classics including: “You’re Still a Young Man,” “Down to the Nightclub,” “So Very Hard to Go,” “Time Will Tell,” and “What is Hip?”

Tower of Power previously appeared at Music in the Park in 1994 and 1995.  Founding members Emilio Castillo (tenor sax and vocals), Stephen “Doc” Kupka (baritone sax), Francis Rocco Prestia (bass) and David Garibaldi (drummer), have never stopped recording or touring in 48 years.

Marcus Scott joined T.O.P. as its new lead singer in April.  “I have always been known as a ‘Soul Man’ but the T.O.P. has me singing Soul with a capital S,” he said.

The show begins at 5:30 p.m. with Super Soul Brothers, which combines funk and jazz with familiar melodies from classic video games, anime and TV and movie soundtracks.

All Music in the Park shows are at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, located in downtown San Jose along Market Street and surrounded by the Fairmont San Jose, Tech Museum of Innovation, San Jose Museum of Art and other downtown landmarks.

First Music in the Park show scheduled for June 24th


SAN JOSE - Multi-Grammy Award-winners Los Lobos will headline the Music in the Park 2016 series opener June 24 at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

The Mexican-American roots-rock group from East Los Angeles has been recording since the late 1970s. Their crossover hit, La Bamba, from the 1987 film reached phenomenal worldwide popularity. Their current tour supports their latest album release, Gates of Gold.

Los Lobos’ three Grammy Awards:
1983 – Anselma – Best Mexican-American Performance (song)
1989 – La Pistola y el Corazon – Best Mexican-American Performance (album)
1995 – Mariachi Suite – Best Pop Instrumental Performance

The show begins just after work at 5:30 p.m. with South Bay guitarist Maxx Cabelllo, Jr.

Grammy Winning Los Lonely Boys Play Music in the Park - Aug. 28


SAN JOSE - Grammy Award winners Los Lonely Boys – the beloved brother trio of Jojo, Henry and Ringo Garza – bring their “Texican” brand of rock ’n’ roll from San Angelo, Texas, to Music in the Park on Aug. 28.

Los Lonely Boys combines elements of rock ’n’ roll, Texas blues, soul, country and Tejano. The band’s debut single, "Heaven" became a Top 20 hit, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s adult contemporary chart, and eventually won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a duo or group with vocal

Los Lonely Boys followed their initial success with two more Grammy nominations in 2006 for their album “Sacred.”  On tour in 2014 supporting their latest album, “Revelation,” Los Lonely Boys has alsoincluded a number of stops along the California coast in 2015, most of which offer tickets starting at $40.

At Music in the Park, advance $10 tickets are on sale atmusicintheparksj.com. Tickets are $15 the day of the show.  Children 12-under are free when accompanied by an adult.


Local favorite J.C. Smith Band (jcsmithband.com), which has been voted “best blues band” in South Bay numerous times, opens the show, which starts at 5:15 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, Market and San Fernando streets.

Music in the Park: Salsa on July 17 and Los Lonely Boys August 28



SAN JOSE - Bring your dancing shoes to Music in the Park on July 17 when P’al Bailador and Julio Bravo y su Orquesta Salsabor, two of the area's top salsa bands, take the Plaza de Cesar Chavez stage. P’al Bailador, “The Dancer’s Salsa Band,” was a standout at the 2013 San Jose Jazz Summerfest. The 11-man Julio Bravo y su Orquestra Salsabor has earned the moniker, “The Bay Area’s Top Salsa Band,” by touring the Bay Area year-round, offering a range of energetic and dance-able salsa. This show also includes a guest appearance by Bloco del Sol, featuring 25-30 Brazilian drums and percussion players. Aug. 28: Los Lonely Boys, a trio of Grammy Award-winning brothers from Texas, will rock Plaza Park in this year’s Music in the park finale. SJ Music Fest @ Plaza de Cesar Chavez Tomorrow

The SJ Music Fest is coming to Plaza de Cesar Chavez tomorrow between noon and 9pm. The event will be headlined by grammy winning R&B band Tony! Toni! Tone'! In addition, you'll have Jingo Santana's Roar (A Santana Tribute), Dakilla, Lumbre, RJae Haas Band, Willie Joe, Darling Bonnie, Jay Lozoya, Myscotto, Bugga Maroo & Tyson. To complement the music, there will be gourmet food trucks, BBQ, beer, and wine.

At 11pm, there is also an after party at Liquid Restaurant & Lounge. The proceeds for the SJ Music Fest will benefit SJ Pulse tech, arts, music, and sports programs in San Jose. More info here.

Music in the Park's 26th Season Opens July 17 with the English Beat and Finish Ticket

SAN JOSE – Music in the Park shows this summer start with a July 17 concert featuring the English Beat, plus up-and-coming alternative rock bands Finish Ticket and The Holdup.

This will be Music in the Park's 26th season, and second season of gated admission.  Tickets purchased in advance cost just $10 for adults and free for children 12-under when accompanied by a supervising adult. Day-of-event price will be $20.  Tickets are now on sale at www.sjdowntown.com/musicinthepark.

The San Jose Downtown Association and Live 105.3 co-host the event from 5:30-9 p.m. at St. James Park starring new wave and ska originals The English Beat.  The Birmingham, England-based band has a 35-year history of success, with hits such as "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Save it for Later," "I Confess," "Stand Down Margaret," "Can’t Get Used To Losing You" and "Tears of a Clown."  Frontman Dave Wakeling retains his relevance as music innovator.  His "Crying Out Loud" album was released earlier in 2014.  Visit http://englishbeat.net/.
 
Finish Ticket is fresh off Live 105's BFD and success with their single, "Tranquilize," off their first major-label release, "Tear You Apart."  They will be coming from the East Coast and continuing their national tour right after making a special appearance at Music in the Park.  Visit http://finishticket.com.

In addition, Music in the Park returns to Plaza de Cesar Chavez for a one of its concerts for the first time in two years.  On Aug. 21, Latin jazz legend Pete Escovedo and his Orchestra make their 19th appearance at Music in the Park, the show starting at 5:30pm. 2013 Grammy Award-winning Latin rock band La Santa Cecilia will open for the 82-year-old Escovedo.

Music in the Park Continues on Thursday!

Up this week for Music in the Park is a Beatles tribute band from Santa Cruz / Monterey called the White Album Ensemble. The show is completely free and well worth a trip to Plaza de Cesar Chavez. See below for more information on this week's band and the full 2011 lineup!

  • They will perform "Beatles and Beyond" a hodgepodge of Beatles classics through the ages, with some solo favorites too. Hits such as Imagine, Maybe I'm Amazed, My Sweet Lord and Dark Horse.

  • Seventh Music in the Park appearance in eight years, taking a year off in 2010.

  • The band consists of top Santa Cruz and Monterey-based musicians and vocalists for bands such as the Doobie Brothers, Quicksilver, Snail and The Little River Band, including: Dale Ockerman keyboards; Ken Kraft, guitarist and vocals; Richard Bryant, vocals; Tiran Porter, bass; Timb Harris (violin and trumpet).  Omar Spence, son of Moby Grace's Skip Spence, will perform some of the vocal work.
