South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk Tonight!

22 venues are participating tonight in Sourth FIRST FRIDAYS, which happens in the SoFA district of Downtown San Jose. Last month was probably the best First Friday I have ever been to that was not tied into another event like SubZERO, and I'm expecting this event to get even better over time. Unfortunately the map below is not entirely accurate since SLG Art Boutiki has moved to make way for a new apartment project (more on that in a future post), and Cafe Stritch is joining the roster. To see a preview of what's going down tonight, just click here.

South First Friday Tonight!

The very first South First Friday of 2013 kicks off tonight, and it looks like there are several new participants in Downtown San Jose's premier art crawl. This is the first time I have even heard of the Seeing Things Gallery on 30 North Third St., same with the LGBTQ Youth Center. I also don't remember The Studio Rock Climbing Gym or Pagoda officially participating in the past. It should be a lot of fun, so come on down and check out some cool art at 21 venues Downtown! Phantom Galleries presents Lonesome Town new works by Kori Thompson at Good Karma Vegan Café.
Everyone has a story. A story of why they are the way are. Every story leads up to when you cross paths or interact with that person. Whether its a person you talk to for a few minutes or a life long friend you see everyday. Our biggest contribution to one another is inspiration. It’s something that is not fake or phony, it can not be bought or sold. It’s a real feeling. These paintings represent the impression people I’ve met have left on me. ~Kori Thompson

South First Fridays Art Walk Tonight!

19 venues will be open for tonight's art walk, rain or "shine!" Looking at the walking map over here, it's interesting to see how things have changed over the past year. I remember when SLG was the only place open on Market Street. Now the Art Glass Center, Higher Fire Clay, and Works are all on Market. The Tech Shop and Pho69 are also new additions not around last year. Looking forward, I'm sure the new Zer01 Garage will be participating in future First Fridays as soon as they get up and running.

For more details on tonight's event, the highlights are down below:

Paulson_KALEID.jpg

The Peculiar Pageant new paintings and installation by Lacey Bryant
Theatrically posed and surrounded by lush, illusory environments, the subjects of Lacey’s newest works are like pictures in a storybook written in an unknown language. The images are somewhat familiar but certain elements remains foreign. Like a hazy dream of an imagined childhood long forgotten, the images strive to make you feel as if you just might have been there once, maybe. As is common in Bryant’s work, there is a subtle tension between beautiful and unsettling elements. This contrast creates a sense of mystery and invites the viewer to construct their own interpretation of the scenes. In the safety of a world poised between reality and imagination where common symbols mingle with strange ones, her characters expose their fears, doubts, despairs and longings.

95 South Market St (at San Fernando)

Folie à Deux Family Tree Monotypes and Glass Statues by Curt Schauer

KALEID Gallery, 88 South Fourth St.

Fictitious Portraits by John Renzel
A series of traditional style character portraits but with a colorful and slightly demented edge.

Rights–Rituals–Regards new work by Troy Sims
Why do I form judgments of others to validate myself? In this series of mixed media paintings, and sculptures constructed of handmade paper and wire, artist Troy Sims touches on personal issues such as: civil rights, honoring our ancestors, and how we perceive beauty.
This body of work explores the subjective world we live in, and the sea of opinions we deal with on a daily basis.

Other highlights include BLOODWORK: BODIES at Anno Domini, Naked! at Higher Fire Clayspace, Adam Everett Quartet for San Jose Jazz and Movin’ on Up! the 2011 members’ exhibition at WORKS.

South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk Sept. 2nd!

from Phantom Galleries
Join us for the First Friday Art Walk & Street Mrkt this Friday, Sept. 2nd!

Two new solo exhibitions by Leslie Ann Rice and Sara Tomasello
KALEID Gallery, 88 So. Fourth St.
Rice_KSept.jpg

Circus Act sculptures by Leslie Ann Rice
A mutt-ley crew of characters explore the circus of popular culture, touching upon the freakish tendencies of human nature.

lady macbeth_SaraT.jpg
Looking through the Glass paintings by Sara Tomasello
Through her paintings, Sara Tomasello builds on themes of intimacy and the unity of opposites. Her characters are symbols for the light and dark aspects of human nature. Using a vibrant color palette and inspired by universal mythological themes, Sara portrays the emotional impact of the world she sees and experiences it in her acrylic paintings. There is a story behind each piece and it begins; Once upon time. Viewers are invited to look through the glass that Sara views the world and reflect on your own experiences of the world.

The Peculiar Pageant new paintings and installation by Lacey Bryant
Good Karma Vegan Cafe, 37 So. First Street
As is common in Lacey’s work, there is a subtle tension between beautiful and unsettling elements. This contrast creates a sense of mystery and invites the viewer to construct their own interpretation of the scenes. In the safety of a world poised between reality and imagination where common symbols mingle with strange ones, Lacey’s characters expose their fears, doubts, despairs and longings.

Folie à Deux Family Tree Monotypes and Glass Statues by Curt Schauer
Phantom Galleries, 95 So. Market St:
In this exhibit, Curt traces the origins and family history of the Folie a Deux series. From the image on the original sign in Tokyo that inspired the figurative images and the early acrylic ink monotype studies, digital drawings and oil based monotypes to the final five piece monotype series and blown glass statues that defined Curt’s work from 2008 to today. Folie a Deux explores the duality of extremes and conflict in human nature and between the art and the viewer in figurative and expressionist styles. Not satisfied with a single medium to express his vision,
Curt furthered the duality theme by recreating the series in colorful 3D blown glass with hand etched graal images. This is the first exhibit to display the family tree in life (glass) and in portrait (monotypes) and displays the use of color, light, movement and dimension in Curt’s art.

The First Friday Art Walk includes 20 participating venues and STREET MRKT will have 40 indie artists booths &3 live bands out on South First St. 7pm-11pm, FREE
