Five Casts of Shrek Jr. Take Over Hoover Theater from September 25

Playful People Productions will run Shrek the Musical Jr. at Historic Hoover Theater, 1635 Park Avenue, from September 25 through October 4. Two age bands share the stage across the ten days: performers five to twelve in one set of casts, twelve to seventeen in the other. Shannon Santandrea and Emily Pennington co-direct. The score is Jeanine Tesori’s, the book David Lindsay-Abaire’s, shortened for young companies but still built around an ogre who would rather stay in his swamp than rescue a princess for Lord Farquaad.

Five named casts split the calendar so families can pick a time that actually works. Castle Cast opens Friday the 25th at 7 p.m., then plays Saturday the 26th at 3 and Sunday the 27th at 11. Duloc Cast takes Saturday the 26th at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., plus Sunday the 27th at 3. Mid-Autumn Festival, Tết Trung Thu in Vietnamese, falls on Friday, September 25 this year. Story Road is marking it the next afternoon. Visit San Jose lists Mid-Autumn Festival Bay Area at Grand Century Mall, 1111 Story Road, starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 26. The mall sits in Little Saigon, the stretch of East San Jose filled with delicious bánh mì shops and herbal stores.

The event features free lanterns for children, music, performances, games, food, and storytelling. There is a mooncake giveaway along with free gifts for the first 500 families along with live music and cultural performances.

Grand Century is indoor-outdoor and already crowded on weekends. Arrive after 4 if the goal is lanterns after the heat drops. Bring cash for mall vendors if you want the best deals.

The same Saturday also has a morning Moon Festival at Children’s Discovery Museum, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Yun Yee Tong lion dance and playdough mooncakes. Andrew P. Hill High School will hold its large children’s Moon Festival on September 19.

Playful People Puts the Year’s Fundraising Night in a 1915 Craftsman Clubhouse

Tickets opened today for “The Magic Is Us,” the annual gala that keeps Playful People Productions running classes, camps, and family casts at San Jose’s Historic Hoover Theater. The party lands Saturday, September 19, from 5 to 10 p.m. at Saratoga Foothill Club, 20399 Park Place, a 1915 American Craftsman hall on the National Register. Guests must be 21 or older. Cocktail clothes are welcome and not mandatory. Individual seats are $200, of which $50 is tax-deductible.

Playful People started in 2010 and became a 501(c)(3) in 2017. Sixteen seasons later the company still takes beginners, stages kids and adults in the same seasons, and lets relatives share a bill when the script allows. The incoming slate already includes Shrek the Musical Jr. in late September and a homeschool Winnie the Pooh at the end of October. Tuition and ticket sales never cover the whole machine. The gala is the night that fills the gap for students across income levels.

The clubhouse evening will run heavy appetizers, desserts, a cash bar, short performances, and dancing. Auction lots include a home tea party with founders Barb Galiotto and Katie D’Arcey, a floral class for ten with Gal in the Glen and alum Jill Maggi, and a murder-mystery dinner for up to ten hosted by staff. Five VIP tables at $3,000 each come with two bottles of wine and a show-theme pick; a few were still listed when tickets went public. Smaller sponsorships start at $100. Cash matches run from $500 to $5,000. Anyone skipping the party can still buy into the online auction or sponsor a staff member.

Sonries the Jaguar Has Moved Into Happy Hollow, San Jose Gets Its Big Cat Back

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo has a new jaguar. His name is Sonries, he arrived from the Los Angeles Zoo through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Jaguar Species Survival Plan, and he is still settling in behind the scenes. Guests walking the bamboo path through Zoo in the Hollow will not find him on exhibit yet. Keepers have given him time to learn new sights, new sounds, and a new daily rhythm before he steps into the outdoor habitat that once belonged to San Jose’s last resident cats.

That gap lasted more than a year. Sophia, the jaguar many local kids grew up watching from the viewing rail, died in June 2025 at age 21 after kidney disease. She had lived at Happy Hollow for about two decades and became one of the oldest jaguars in an AZA-accredited zoo. Kianto, the park’s other senior male, was already gone. The empty habitat left a hole in a 16-acre park that has mixed rides and conservation since 1961. Sonries’ transfer is the Species Survival Plan doing what it was built to do: move animals between accredited zoos so the North American population stays genetically healthy.

The animal care team has refused a fixed debut date. Positive reinforcement training is underway, the same slow, treat-and-trust work that lets a big cat choose when a new step feels safe. Happy Hollow published Chapter 1 of a “Meet Sonries” series on August 16 and promised milestones, enrichment clips, and keeper notes in the weeks ahead. When he is ready for public viewing, the park said it will say so first.

A trip to Kelley Park still pays off while the wait continues. Twix the red panda, capybaras, lemurs, meerkats, and the petting barn remain on view. Danny the Dragon, the carousel, and the Pacific Fruit Express keep running. Every ticket still feeds Quarters for Conservation, the program that sends a slice of admission to field projects abroad. General admission currently runs $22 for ages 2 to 59, $19 for seniors and military, and free for children under 2. Parking is $10. Note the current detour: Story Road at the main entrance has been closed, so drivers should use the lot at 1300 Senter Road until the park says otherwise.

Follow the zoo’s updates, then take the kids anyway. The hollow already has a jaguar again. The rest of us just have to wait until Sonries decides the yard is his.

New Bill Kee Park Takes Shape Near Almaden Expressway

A modest 1.4-acre parcel at the end of Rinconada Drive will soon become Bill Kee Park, a neighborhood gathering spot complete with a playground, walking loop, pollinator garden, public art, and a bioretention system that captures and filters stormwater. The site sits adjacent to the Almaden Expressway and Curtner Avenue off-ramp in south San Jose.

City Council approved the name earlier this year after community surveys ranked Bill Kee highest among the options. Kee, a Chinese American business leader who died in 1989, helped preserve San Jose’s historic Chinatown and broke barriers by becoming one of the first Chinese Americans admitted to several local civic organizations.

Design work is scheduled to wrap up this spring, with construction expected to begin in the fall and the park opening for public use by summer 2027. The project grows out of land dedicated during the Latitude 37 apartment development and forms part of broader efforts to improve water quality while adding recreation space to nearby residential pockets.

Families and neighbors in the area will gain a quiet place to walk, play, and learn once the improvements arrive. Holiday Trolley Rides Return to Willow Glen

Willow Glen welcomes back its cherished holiday trolley rides this December, offering a delightful way to experience the neighborhood's festive charm. From December 7 through December 18, the Willow Glen Business Association hosts these evening journeys along tree-lined streets adorned with lights. Riders glide past sidewalk cafes, boutiques, and cozy shops that give the area its small-town appeal within San Jose.

Each ride lasts 30 minutes and departs from the Bank of America lot at 1245 Lincoln Avenue, with departures at 5:15pm, 6pm, 6:45pm, 7:30pm, 8:15pm, and 9pm. The open-air trolley seats up to 32 passengers, providing views of the holiday decorations. Arrive early for check-in to secure a spot on this popular attraction.

Tickets are on sale now, with adults at $40 plus fees and children aged 2 to 12 at $20 plus fees. Kids under 2 ride free on a lap.
