New Eight-Story Apartment Building Planned Near SAP Center

San Jose adds has a new proposed mid-rise development in the Garden-Alameda neighborhood. Plans filed with the city show a new eight-story apartment building at 945 W. Julian St., right at the intersection with Morrison Avenue. The project would replace a house and office that currently occupy the site and bring 136 new units to the area.

The development team, headed by Anthony Ho, envisions a mix of homes suited to different needs. Twenty-eight studios would measure about 360 square feet. Fifty-four one-bedroom apartments would come in at roughly 490 square feet. Another fifty-four two-bedroom units would offer around 730 square feet each. The site covers just under a half acre.

This stretch of Julian Street already hosts the Diridon West apartments, a 249-unit project completed in recent years at the corner of Stockton Avenue. The current proposal would make use of Senate Bill 330 provisions that help expedite housing reviews across California.

Living here would put residents within easy reach of SAP Center events, from hockey games to major concerts. The spot also benefits from connections to regional transit and the broader momentum building around the Diridon station area.

City planning records describe the submission as preliminary. Final designs and details remain subject to change through the review process. Even at this stage, the plans reflect sustained interest in creating more places to call home near one of San Jose's most recognizable landmarks.

San Jose Secures a Professional Women’s Hockey League Franchise

San Jose has secured its place in the Professional Women’s Hockey League as the league’s 12th franchise. The announcement marks another step in the rapid growth of women’s professional hockey and positions the city as a key West Coast hub for the sport.

The new team will play its home games at SAP Center, the same venue undergoing a major renovation. This addition brings the PWHL to four West Coast teams, easing travel demands that have challenged existing clubs in Vancouver and Seattle.

All PWHL teams operate under TWG Global rather than local NHL ownership. The structure supports the league’s independent expansion while San Jose prepares to welcome players, staff, and fans in the coming seasons.

City leaders have linked the arrival of the team to broader plans for a sports and entertainment district in Downtown San Jose. Such developments aim to increase activity and economic vitality around the arena through mixed-use projects and improved fan experiences.

The combination of a new professional team, arena improvements, and district planning signals continued momentum for San Jose as a destination for sports and entertainment. Residents and visitors alike stand to benefit from the added energy these investments bring to the urban core.

Throne Smart Restroom in Arena Green West Near SAP Center

San Jose installed a high-tech public restroom that raised the standard for convenience at Arena Green West. The Throne unit arrived in Guadalupe River Park directly across from SAP Center and delivered a clean, efficient experience for park visitors and event crowds.

The solar-powered, fully self-contained design featured a toilet, urinal, sink, and baby-changing table inside pleasant plant-themed surroundings. Access opened instantly through a QR code, text message, mobile app, or simple entry card. A friendly voice in English and Spanish offered a warm welcome while soft music played during each stay.

Smart sensors monitored the space and a ten-minute limit with gentle reminders kept everything fresh and ready for the next user. This six-month pilot program funded by the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy tested an innovative answer to longstanding public restroom challenges.

The addition made time spent along the Guadalupe River and near SAP Center far more comfortable for families, fans, and daily visitors alike. Hopefully the pilot will go well and we'll see more of these throughout Downtown public spaces.

Arena Green Park Receives Major Makeover Next to SAP Center

Arena Green Park stepped up its role in Downtown San Jose after receiving a targeted refresh right beside SAP Center. The city directed $1.1 million into the project while the San Jose Sharks contributed $200,000 to help activate this key green space and strengthen connections across downtown neighborhoods.

Crews removed the abandoned carousel to create a versatile new event space and converted the tennis court into modern pickleball and multipurpose courts. They added upgraded lighting along the trails, improved pathways, and completed a thorough cleanup that drew more foot traffic and daily activity to the area.

Special accent lighting around the palm trees will glow teal whenever the Sharks score at the nearby Shark Tank. The detail turned the park into a natural extension of game nights and gave fans an even better experience on their way to and from events.

These upgrades formed part of a broader effort to link different sections of Downtown San Jose and encourage everyone to linger longer. Head over soon to see how the renewed park enhances the entire Downtown experience.

Sharks Way

San Jose has long cherished its sports teams, with the San Jose Sharks holding a special place in the city's heart since their debut in 1991. This hockey team has woven itself into the fabric of the Bay Area, delivering thrilling moments and fostering a deep sense of pride among fans. Now, the city is celebrating this legacy by renaming a prominent stretch near the SAP Center as Sharks Way, a tribute that strengthens the bond between the team and Downtown San Jose.

The timing of this change aligns with San Jose’s efforts to secure the Sharks’ future here. City leaders, including Mayor Matt Mahan, are nearing a 25-year agreement to keep the team rooted in San Jose, pending City Council approval. This long-term commitment underscores the Sharks’ value as more than just a sports franchise; they’re a cornerstone of community spirit. Sharks Way symbolizes that dedication, promising a lasting impact on the city’s identity.

You can find Sharks Way at the corner of West St. John Street and North Almaden Boulevard.
