Salsa Fest Takes South First Street on September 12

San Jose Salsa Fest and Night Market is set for Saturday, September 12, from 2 to 9 p.m. in the SoFA District. Organizers are pointing people to 300–400 South First Street, the same stretch that holds First Fridays most months. SoFA’s First Friday of September Puts Art in the Street From 5-10

South First Fridays returns Friday, September 4, from 5 to 10 p.m. across the SoFA District and a few rooms beyond it. Galleries stay open late with free entry. Street Mrkt sets up on South First Street in front of Anno Domini and KALEID, which is the outdoor spine of the night: painters, glass, ceramics, zines, henna, a music bus, and three food trucks. 3 Brothers Kitchen, 3 Hermanos Mexican Grill, and Me Oi Vietnamese Kitchen will feed the block. Street parking is free after 6. City garages at South Third and San Carlos still offer the usual 90-minute window.

Anno Domini at 366 South First will hang Brandan Styles’s “Blissful Rituals for a Mad World.” KALEID at 320 South First opens Judy Rookstool’s “Bring It” with a reception from 5 to 9. MACLA shows Viviana Paredes. Phantom Galleries at the Pierce apartments gives Force129 a solo called “Reimagined.” The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles has Samantha Saldaña in “A Mi Manera / My Own Way.” Chopsticks Alley Gallery pairs Charlene Tan’s “Pearls Remember” with a 7 p.m. ekphrastic poetry set. Works/San José opens “Overtime: the Work of Living,” a 38-artist look at what people do when nobody is clocking them. Art Ark on South Sixth and Machu Picchu Gallery at the Citadel extend the walk into Martha Gardens.

For live music, San Jose Jazz runs the SJZ Break Room from 6 p.m., with the Michael Webster Quartet at 6:15 and an open jam from 7 to 9 for anyone who brought an instrument. Opera San José will put Nicole Koh, Courtney Miller, Micah Perry, and Ethan Chu on First Street in two short sets, plus lemonade, popcorn, and a scavenger hunt that can turn into free Don Giovanni tickets. A few blocks north, the San José Museum of Art’s own First Friday, “Rhinestone Skies,” runs 6 to 9 with drag, poetry, and kids’ tables if the walk needs a second destination.

CURATUS still produces the night as a spend-it-with-the-artists event, not a ticketed festival. Buy a print. Tip the trucks. Sit through the jam. September 4 is the first First Friday of the fall season, which means the weather usually cooperates and the sidewalks fill early. Start at First and San Carlos and walk south until the galleries thin out.

Street Mrkt Turns South First Street into an Open-Air Gallery This Friday

South First Fridays returns tomorrow with its companion STREET MRKT indie urban art faire, transforming a stretch of South First Street in the SoFA District into a free outdoor showcase of local creativity. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on August 7, galleries and museums across Downtown San Jose will stay open late with free admission while dozens of hyper-local artists set up along the street in front of Anno Domini and KALEID Gallery.

Visitors will find original paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, and light projections available for purchase, giving direct support to the makers who keep San Jose’s independent art scene alive. Food trucks including 3 Brothers Kitchen, 3 Hermanos Mexican Grill, Kabobi Persian Grill, and Me Oi Vietnamese Kitchen will line the route, making it easy to linger and explore between stops.

Participating spaces will feature new exhibitions ranging from mixed-media storytelling at Anno Domini to textile explorations of identity at MACLA and immersive installations at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. The combination of indoor shows and the outdoor market creates a single evening that rewards both casual walkers and dedicated collectors.

Free street parking kicks in after 6 p.m., and short-term garage options sit nearby at South Third and San Carlos or South Second and San Carlos. The event remains fully family-friendly and open to everyone who wants a low-pressure way to experience the creative energy that defines the SoFA District.

Anyone looking for an easy Downtown plan this Friday can head straight to South First Street and let the mix of art, food, and open galleries set the pace for the night.

Music Mania Brings Three Nights of Multi-Genre Concerts to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose secured a new musical highlight for late March. Music Mania steps in as the city’s first multi-genre music festival, setting up shop at the SoFA Lot from March 27 to 29. The outdoor space at 350 South First Street lines up directly with the NCAA Sweet 16 basketball action unfolding nearby at SAP Center.

Friday opens with heavy electronic sets led by DJ Diesel, the alter ego of Shaquille O’Neal, supported by Whethan, Eptic, Zen Selekta, and Maneki. Saturday shifts focus to pop anthems anchored by Bebe Rexha alongside Hayla, 3Quency, Ashley Mehta, and She Is Jules. Sunday delivers country storytelling through Dustin Lynch joined by Ashley Cooke, Graham Barham, and Ryan Scripps.

The setup rewards anyone already in the area for hoops. Attendees can move from daytime games straight into evening performances without leaving the neighborhood. The SoFA Lot sits surrounded by great spots to grab food or stretch out between acts, turning one trip downtown into a full weekend of experiences.

September First Fridays ArtWalk

San Jose transforms its SoFA Distric in Downtown San Jose into a lively showcase of creativity during the First Fridays ArtWalk + Street Mrkt on September 5, 2025, from 5pm to 10pm. Spanning the SoFA District, Historic District, and Martha Gardens District, the free, family-friendly event features new gallery exhibitions, live performances, and interactions with local artists. Attendees can stroll through venues hosting fresh works, enjoy music at various spots, and support the indie urban art faire on South First Street, where hyper-local creators display and sell their pieces.

In the SoFA District, highlights include Anno Domini's opening reception for Kazland's solo exhibition A love letter to all the cars that could have hit him, but didn’t, with mixed-media pieces exploring mortality and magic created during the artist's recovery from an accident. KALEID Gallery presents Jeffrey Bramschreiber's Portraits from the Wild, a series of paintings reflecting his journey through personal challenges by connecting with nature. MACLA opens There Are New Suns, an interactive exhibition on cultural resilience and gentrification using animation, augmented reality, projection mapping, phenakistiscope sculptures, and quilted cyanotypes by artists Cecelia Perez, Claudia Blanco, and Samantha Saldana, accompanied by a DJ set from The Homegirls of Soul led by DJ Soulera. Phantom Galleries displays Jerry Berkstresser's landscape photography at The Pierce, along with murals like Danny Feliz Hanson's Romance and the Urban Abstractions series by multiple artists.

Opera San Jose at the California Theatre offers opera arias in the courtyard, Mighty Wurlitzer organ performances by Jerry Nagano, a scavenger hunt, and complimentary refreshments starting at 5:30pm. San Jose Jazz hosts the Michael Webster Quartet at 6:20pm followed by an all-ages jam session. The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles features Kay Sekimachi: Ingenuity and Imagination with over 40 works blending Japanese heritage and textile innovation, plus Virginia Davis: Art and Illusion showcasing 21 textiles exploring optic phenomena and resist techniques.

The Historic District includes Chopsticks Alley Gallery's Flow in Secret Garden with batik tapestries by Voonbin Leow and wearable art by Yachen Xie, alongside Works/San Jose's Climate Interrelations Imaginative by five artists addressing the climate crisis. In Martha Gardens District, Art Ark Gallery shows Hargun Mahal Mann's In Search of Our Mothers Garden on migration and belonging with an artist talk at 6:30pm, Fuse Presents exhibits Trieu Hai Dao's Echo of Life, and Machu Picchu Gallery displays Peruvian arpilleras preserving Amazon themes.

Street Mrkt turns South First Street into an open-air gallery with over 30 artists like Animate One, Bay Area Glass Institute, and Danny Feliz Hanson demonstrating their crafts. DJs spin in the beer garden, while food trucks such as Barya Kitchen, Daily Grind Burger, and Luvs Brownies provide diverse bites. Jackie’s Place Brings Soulful Flavors to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose will get a little bit tastier with the arrival of Jackie’s Place, a brand-new restaurant serving up authentic soul food. This will be Downtown San Jose's first dedicated soul food restaurant and the second location for Jackie's Place. The original is in Japantown and has a Yelp rating of 4.5 with 1,700 reviews.

Nestled in the heart of SoFA, this spot is ready to dish out plates piled high with Southern classics—think crispy fried chicken, slow-cooked collard greens, and mac and cheese. It's located right next to Nirvana Soul, one of the hottest coffee shops in Downtown San Jose.

What’s even better? Jackie’s Place is rooting itself in San Jose by sourcing fresh ingredients from nearby farms and suppliers. It’s a small but meaningful way this restaurant is giving back, creating jobs and strengthening the local food chain. The cozy setup—wooden tables, soft lighting, and the mouthwatering aroma of fried goodness—only adds to the draw.

SoFA Block Party Will Feature a FREE Concert with Steve Aoki

On May 13, Downtown San Jose’s SoFA District will transform into the epicenter of excitement as global superstar Steve Aoki headlines a free block party. It’s all happening the day before the San Jose Earthquakes take on Inter Miami CF at PayPal Park—a prelude to one of the Bay Area’s most anticipated soccer showdowns.

This block party, hosted by the San Jose Earthquakes in collaboration with the Urban Vibrancy Institute (UVI) and the City of San Jose, kicks off the 2025 UVI Block Party Series. The series is all about spotlighting what makes our neighborhoods special, and the SoFA District—known for its artsy edge and dynamic energy—sets the stage perfectly. Whether you’re a music lover, a soccer fanatic, or just someone who loves a good time, this event has something for you.

Steve Aoki isn’t just any DJ—he’s a two-time Grammy-nominated powerhouse with nearly 3 billion music streams under his belt. Billboard calls him “one of the most in-demand entertainers in the world,” and he’s brought the house down at festivals like Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Electric Daisy Carnival. Now, he’s bringing that same energy to Downtown San Jose, joined by a lineup of talented local artists who’ll showcase the creative soul of our city.

But the fun doesn’t stop with the music. Expect a street scene buzzing with activity—games where you can flex your Earthquakes pride, tasty eats and drinks from local vendors, and plenty of chances to connect with fellow San Joseans.

It's a special month as March is the 19th anniversary of the First Friday Artwalk! Enjoy Ukranian-born Natasha Kramskaya's solo exhibit at The Pierce or live Jazz music at SJZ Break Room. Citadel Studios will have an opening reception to their art show "Sweet Lost" (FUSE Presents on the map below).

Downtown San Jose art installation will become a temporary skating rink

A temporary art project that was put up in the SoFA District in 2021 will soon become open to the public on a regular basis. The "Serpentine Pavilion" was supposed to be a placeholder for a three-tower project that was cancelled. Now it will become part of Unzipped Gardens Roller Rink and Beer Garden.

Today through Memorial Day, visitors will be able to rent skates and enjoy beer and food-truck bites while admiring the art piece. DJs and live bands will provide atmospheric music. The chain-link fences will also finally come down and be replaced with a more elegant permanent fence.

I have walked through the art project several times during special events and it is really impressive. I hope we find some way to preserve the tower or incorporate it into whatever future development takes place on this block.

The schedule for the roller rink and beer garden will be Fridays from 5-10pm, Saturdays from noon-10pm, and Sundays from noon-7pm. Skate rentals are $25 for adults and $20 for kids under 12, but skating is not required to walk in and hang out.

The most unique part of the event this month is an interactive activity at the California Theatre hosted by Opera San Jose. You can watch a captivating performance from Bluebeard's Castle followed by a scavenger hunt through the theater and lobbies filled with hidden surprises. They will also have temporary tattoos, popcorn, and a tarot card reader. Very cool, and all free to the public. I'll also have to mention the free live jazz music at the SJZ Break Room throughout the event starting at 4:50pm.

Pete Be Center to bring more live music and events to SoFA District

San Jose's SoFA District took a hit when Uproar Brewery closed down. Even after the transition to Level Uproar, it still couldn't stay afloat. Now another entrepreneur is taking over the space and turning it into an event space.

Pete Be wants Downtown San Jose to be a major social destination seven days a week. He wants to build a venue that will activate the area and bring more popular musical acts to San Jose. The Pete Be Center is crucial to that goal.

The venue is a sizable 11,000 SQFT including the mezzanine. In addition to live music, he is planning to host block parties on the sidewalk and street outside and have cultural events. His goal is to regularly bring 1,500 to 2,000 people to SoFA for events.

If everything goes according to plan, the party will start between April and June next year.

Three-tower housing project proposed for Downtown San Jose

Westbank and Urban Community are working on a stunning 1,147 unit project that would span a trio of towers. This is the most exciting proposal I have seen in some time for Downtown San Jose.

Each tower would rise 30 stories or roughly 300 feet. Two of the towers would have terraces featuring small trees and plants. The third tower would by a cylinder, a shape no other San Jose high-rise utilizes. The combination of the three look fantastic.

The site of this proposal is the Valley Title lot at 300 South First Street and 345 South Second Street in SoFA. Currently the site consists of a parking lot, a public art project that can hopefully be moved, and a three-story building.

The project would also include a generous 18,400 SQFT of retail and 8,700 SQFT of residential amenities such as a courtyard and gym. Based on the renders, it looks like they are planning for one of my favorite amenities--rooftop swimming pools.

As exciting as this is already, Westbank and Urban Community also have an option to add two more 20-story office towers with a combined 1.32 million SQFT of office space and 60,4000 SQFT of ground-floor retail.

There is currently no planned timeline. The next steps are getting city approval for the proposal, which I'm optimistic will come quickly.

Pobladores Night Market this Thursdays in SoFA

This week the Pobladores night market has been extended from 5:30-9pm to 10pm in Downtown San Jose's artsy SoFA District. There will be music, vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, and live performances. It's a great option for a Thursday night to get ready for an action-packed weekend.

Sorry for the delays in posts the past week, had some personal issues and am working on getting back on a regular schedule.

Mama Kin

Mama Kin is a great intimate venue for Jazz and live music in Downtown San Jose's SoFA District. You can get a sneak peak of the show just by walking by, but they have a solid Southern-style food and drink menu on the inside. 

Performances are typically inexpensive and are a great centerpiece for a night out Downtown. DL Edwards & the Disciples are playing tonight, and you can get tickets over here.

New renders of a slightly downsized Gateway Tower in SoFA

A tower proposed for the edge of Downtown San Jose in the artsy SoFA District has new renders. It's appropriately called the Gateway Tower as it will welcome visitors and residents to the Downtown area. The latest render has been reduced from 20 floors to 15. It still looks fantastic with different facades on each side and even incorporates some of the the historic buildings on the ground floor into the project.

The tower will have a total of 220 units, which now appear to have been allocated to affordable housing. Originally the Gateway Tower was supposed to contain luxury apartments, but they have likely been converted to make approvals and financing easier. If you want luxury, The Fay is just down the street. There will also be 3,800 SQFT of retail along the ground floor.

One exciting aspect of the project is that there will be a small plaza and area for live performances, which jives really well with the character of the SoFA District. The area is known for art festivals and live music.

Another interesting twist is that it will include a historical exhibit to commemorate the career of "Doc" Herrold, who was the first entertainment radio broadcaster (yes, from San Jose). This will pass on some of the legacy of the Herrold College that used to sit on this site.

There is still no ETA for construction, but hopefully they will be able to break ground as soon as possible.

New housing project near SoFA gets funding

166 apartments (164 of which are designated as affordable units) are slated for 802 South First Street just outside the traditional boundaries of Downtown San Jose. The site is just south of Highway 280, a few blocks away from SoFA. The six-story building also includes 1,500 SQFT of ground-floor retail. 

The project will cost nearly $100 million. Fortunately, PNC is willing to finance $66 million of that between a construction loan and bridge loan. The rest will be mostly made up by state-backed financing.

The goal is to kick off construction by September with an expected completion date of 2026.

Viva CalleSJ: SoFA to the Streets (San Jose's SoFA, SCC Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park)

Viva CalleSJ is back for it's 1st event of the 2024! Miles of city streets will be completely shut down to let people walk, run, dance, bike, unicycle, skateboard, or hoverboard down the streets of San Jose. 

SoFA to the Streets features three activity hubs which are festivals-within-a-festival that highlight the local area. This time the activity hubs will be SoFA, the SCC Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park. You can expect live music, vendors, food, activities, bike parking, and good times at all of the hubs. In between the activity hubs you will still find all sorts of interesting stops, hydration stations, and stores.

A unique feature this time around is the route is a single line with no branches. It's crazy to think you can walk all the way from Martial Cottle Park on Branham Lane all the way to Downtown San Jose on city streets.

The event takes place on Sunday, April 21st from 10am to 3pm (streets are closed until 4pm). There is no beginning or end and the traffic flows in both directions. It's completely free and you can use the handy map below to locate the routes and festivities. For more info, head over here.
