Free Concerts Keep the Energy High at St. James Park This Summer

Friends of Levitt Pavilion San Jose continue filling St. James Park with free live music through September, giving Downtown San Jose another strong summer of outdoor performances while plans for a permanent pavilion move forward. The series already draws families, friends, and neighbors for afternoons that mix quality artists, food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and activities for kids.

This Sunday, August 30 at 4:30 p.m., the park shifts into salsa mode with Los Calderones as headliners and DJ Leydis opening the evening with salsa dance instruction. The Bay Area Cuban Afro-Latin funk band, led by trombonist and arranger Obrayan Calderon, blends reparto energy with urban and traditional Latin sounds for an explosive set that invites the whole crowd onto the lawn. MACLA co-presents the night, adding another layer of cultural connection to the program.

The schedule still holds a few more strong dates after that. Tomorrow, August 16, The Purple Ones deliver a Prince tribute with a Michael Jackson versus Prince DJ set to open the afternoon. On September 6 the series closes at St. James Park with Peach Tree Rascals, co-presented by CUKUI. Two additional “Levitt on Location” shows land at Cypress Pavilion at Lake Cunningham later this month and next.

All of these concerts stay free and open to every age. Bring a blanket or chair, grab something from the food trucks, and settle in for an easy evening. The music keeps rolling, and St. James Park remains one of the simplest ways to spend a late-summer Sunday in the city.

Levitt San Jose Brings Free Hip-Hop Night to St. James Park

Levitt San Jose is continuing its tradition of free live music in Downtown San Jose at St. James Park. The organization has lined up a strong 2026 series that brings diverse artists to the park from May through September.

On Sunday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. the spotlight turns to hip-hop with Kev Choice and his ensemble presenting the music of A Tribe Called Quest along with new material and original work. Kev Choice, a pianist, composer, and producer who has collaborated with artists including Lauryn Hill, E-40, and Ledisi, will blend jazz, hip-hop, soul, and improvisation in fresh arrangements that honor the iconic group while showcasing his own artistry.

The performance goes beyond a simple tribute by celebrating the lasting cultural impact of A Tribe Called Quest and the way music connects generations. Audiences can expect dynamic takes on classics, instrumental interpretations, and an immersive experience that appeals to longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The full series includes other standout nights such as a Prince tribute in August and a salsa evening co-presented with MACLA, all set against the backdrop of St. James Park with food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and activities for kids. Free Live Music Returns to St. James Park for an Unforgettable June Lineup

The John Santos Sextet will play a free concert on June 20, spotlighted Latin jazz in St. James Park. This multi Grammy nominee and his ensemble will explore the historical threads and improvisational fire of styles from Cuba, Puerto Rico and wider Latin America. Scheduled openers are Future Dead Ringers and Bloco do Sol. The full program invites all ages to enjoy food trucks alongside a beer and wine garden in the open air setting.

June 21 will deliver a high energy celebration of Father s Day, Make Music Day and global soccer excitement. Los Rakas will bring their signature Panamanian mix of hip hop, plena, reggae and dancehall to the stage as headliners. The Grammy nominated duo, known for empowering narratives and collaborations with artists across genres, will headline a day that also features Kaefan, Rogê and local DJs such as Mumbai Rani.

Further dates in the series will extend the momentum with themes ranging from lowrider Souldies to Prince tributes and salsa instruction. Co presentations with groups like MACLA and CUKUI ensure each weekend reflects the breadth of San Jose artistic voices.

Levitt Pavilion San Jose Targets Summer 2028 Opening

San Jose advances its cultural landscape with the upcoming Levitt Pavilion, a $21 million music venue planned for a corner of St. James Park in Downtown San Jose. This project, in development since 2012, recently secured a tri-party agreement among the city, the Levitt Foundation, and Friends of Levitt San Jose. The agreement allocates $15 million from the city and $500,000 from the Levitt Foundation, plus annual operational support of $250,000. Friends of Levitt San Jose aims to raise at least $5 million to initiate construction, with hopes of reaching $7 million for added operational funds.

Once completed, the pavilion will host at least 50 free concerts each year, accommodating up to 5,000 guests. This setup promotes accessible live music for all ages, aligning with the mission to build community through performances. The venue's plug-and-play design allows local art groups and organizations to rent the space for events, enhancing its versatility. Acoustic technology ensures sound directs forward, minimizing impact on surrounding areas.

Similar Levitt pavilions in other cities have spurred significant development. For instance, Levitt Pavilion Dayton generated $310 million in capital investment since 2018, revitalizing vacant buildings. Levitt Pavilion Sioux Falls brought $560 million in new projects over five years, including retail, residences, and hotels. In San Jose, the pavilion could catalyze development around St. James Park, potentially adding 1,000 to 1,200 housing units on nearby sites.

Pop-up concerts sponsored by Levitt have already demonstrated the park's potential, drawing crowds to diverse acts like cumbia-punk-rock bands. Starlight Cinema Brings Outdoor Movie Magic to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose transforms into a vibrant open-air theater this summer with the return of Starlight Cinema. Hosted by the San Jose Downtown Association, this free movie series invites families, friends, and neighbors to gather at St. James Park for unforgettable evenings under the stars.

Each screening offers more than just a film. Attendees can arrive early to enjoy live music, local food vendors, and lawn games, creating a festive atmosphere before the main event. Blankets and low-back chairs are encouraged for comfort, while the park’s lush green space provides an ideal setting for picnics. Summer in Downtown San Jose promises to be unforgettable with Levitt San Jose’s 2025 concert series kicking off in St. James Park. This lineup of free, family-friendly shows brings a wide range of musical genres—blues, country, souldies, cumbia, and more—right to the heart of the city. Beyond the music, these events foster a sense of community, turning the park into a lively gathering spot for all ages, complete with food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and activities for kids.

The series launches on June 1st with a blues-packed afternoon co-presented by The Fountain Blues Foundation. Maxx Cabello Jr., a Bay Area guitarist and vocalist with a knack for captivating crowds, headlines the show, joined by opener M’ssippi Slide. Later, on June 22nd, Cash’d Out takes the stage, delivering a spot-on tribute to Johnny Cash’s early sound with a high-energy twist that appeals to fans across generations. 

From July through September, the series keeps the momentum going with an eclectic mix of performances. Expect souldies on July 6th with Thee Heart Tones and The Charities, a cumbia and Latinx rock explosion on July 20th featuring Tropa Magica, and a psychedelic Latinx night with Valley Wolf on August 3rd. The lineup rounds out with a reggae bash on August 24th and a cumbia celebration on September 6th, each event co-presented by local arts groups that highlight San Jose’s rich cultural diversity.

The series kicks off on May 25 with a dynamic celebration of Africa Day, co-presented by AWO. Expect an afternoon filled with the infectious rhythms of Riddim Exchange, a Bay Area collective delivering electrifying Afrobeats, alongside the traditional Zimbabwean sounds and dances of the Chinyakare Ensemble. The day starts strong with the Anambra State Cultural Association of Nigeria showcasing the rich heritage of the Igbo people through music and masquerade. This is just a taste of what’s to come—summer highlights include soulful blues on June 1 with Maxx Cabello Jr., psychedelic Latinx funk from Valley Wolf on August 3, and a roots reggae bash featuring Groundation on August 24. With concerts spanning the season, there’s always a new sound to discover.

San Jose music pavilion takes another step forward

A long awaited Levitt Pavilion in the corner of St. James Park is getting closer to reality. The project would include a music pavilion, a reimagined park, picnic grove, garden, monument walks, fountain, dog park, and playground.

The city of San Jose would contribute $15 million to  $5 million would come from a local nonprofit called Friends of Levitt Pavilion San Jose.

When completed, it will accommodate up to 5,000 people for free, family-friendly concerts. Performing arts and community groups will also be able to rent the pavilion.

The developers are going to host a partial concert season during the construction phase until May 2026. The first full season of 50 free concerts is expected in 2027.

Starlight Cinema - free outdoor screening of To Wong Foo Aug 17th

Starlight Cinema is a beloved Downtown San Jose tradition featuring popular movies along with accompanying activities in Saint James Park. This weekend the movie is To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar starting at dusk (~8:20pm) on Saturday, August 17th. This will be the last Starlight Cinema for 2024.

The pre-movie activities start at 7pm and include:

• Beats from Splash DJs
• Red carpet drag performances and photo ops
• Tie-dye creations with Guadalupe River Park Conservancy
• Bocce ball
• Luv's Brownies Dessert Truck featuring decadent brownies and sundaes

There will also be a contest with San Jose Earthquake game vouchers and Music in the Park tickets for Cuco. The afterparty is being hosted at Splash with drink specials.

Starlight Cinema is a beloved Downtown San Jose tradition featuring popular movies along with accompanying activities in Saint James Park. This weekend the movie is The Goonies starting at dusk (~8:35pm) on Saturday, August 3rd.

The pre-movie activities include a scavenger hunt at 7pm hosted by Secret San Jose, photo-ops with themed props, and Goonies trivia with prizes. Other free activities include:

• Build Your Own Boobie Trap activity with Children’s Discovery Museum
• Raffle hosted by The Tech Interactive

Dr. Funk is perhaps the most appropriately themed for The Goonies.

Starlight Cinema - free outdoor screening of Barbie tomorrow

Starlight Cinema is a beloved Downtown San Jose tradition featuring popular movies along with accompanying activities in Saint James Park. Tomorrow the movie is Barbie, starting at dusk (8:50pm). 

The pre-movie activities this time around include craft activities for kids, Barbie-themed face painting, a DJ, local drag queens, lawn games, a rock wall, and a selfie area with props. Dressing up as your favorite Barbie or Ken is also encouraged. The festivities start at 7:30pm.

If you are looking to have a picnic, some local restaurants are offering discounts if you mention "Starlight Cinema." That includes 10% off Serious Dumpling and Angelou's Mexican Grill (newly expanded with a bar) and 15% off at The City Fish. After the movie, Splash will have a Pink Drink special until 1:45am.

Downtown San Jose is getting a new high school

An 87-year-old private school called Hillbrook that is based in Los Gatos is expanding to Downtown San Jose. The school is leasing two historic buildings: the Moir Building at 227 N. First Street and the San Jose Armory at 240 N. Second Street. These buildings will be leased for at least 25 years, which will breathe some new life to the area around St. James Park.

The school was specifically seeking a Downtown San Jose location so that they can partner with local nonprofits, businesses, and SJSU.  Social impact and entrepreneurship are two of the tenants the high school wants to focus on. 

It will take two years to get the buildings ready and total enrollment for the school is expected to reach 300 students. If you have kids in grade school and this is sounding interesting so far... start saving. Today's tuition for Hillbrook goes all the way up to $40,700 per year.

Friends of Levitt Pavilion San Jose: “Building Community through Music”.

Sundays this Spring (May 26, June 2, 9, 16) bring a picnic, drop a blanket on the lawn and enjoy free, all ages, high quality concerts from 3:30pm – 7pm in historic St. James Park. There will be a Beer & Wine Garden, and delicious local food trucks will be on hand to ensure a stress free Sunday afternoon  in the park.

Kicking off the 4 concert series on May 26th, in celebration of Worldwide Recognition of Africa Day, Amayo will bring the Afro beats to the lawn. Former Frontman of Antibalas for 23 years, Amayo was credited for bringing Afrobeat to a global audience, leading it to become a genre of itself. He composed the GRAMMY nominated “Fu Chronicles” album for “Best Global Music Album of the Year” 2020. It was the launchpad for Amayo’s solo career - where Kung Fu meets Afrobeat. This concert will feature African diaspora music, dancing, crafts & more!

June 2nd, Friends of Levitt Pavilion San jose will honor and recognize the passing of Board Member, Rick Holden as Noah & The Arkiteks takes the stage in a celebration of Blues.

On June 9th, the Spring 2024 Levitt Pavilion San Jose concert series will feature the return of Lyrics Born. Lyrics Born relocated to the United States from his birthplace of Toyko, Japan around the time Hip Hop was exploding on the East Coast. From the moment he heard Sugar Hill Gang’s 1980 classic “Rapper’s Delight,”  the Bay Area Hip Hop luminary knew he’d found his calling. 

Closing out the Spring concert series on June 16th (the best place to celebrate Father’s Day!) The Jack Moves will bring the Souldies sound to the Levitt lawn.

Every Sunday (October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29) bring a picnic, drop a blanket on the lawn and enjoy free, all ages, high quality concerts from 3pm – 6:30pm in Historic St. James Park. There will be a Beer & Wine Garden featuring Coterie Winery and local breweries, and delicious local food trucks will be on hand to ensure a stress free Sunday evening in the park.

Artist bio:

Throughout her fruitful independent career, spanning three EPs and multiple collaborations, Madison has earned accolades from The New York Times, NPR, The FADER, and Pitchfork, who named her a Rising Artist in 2018. Her genre-bending work has led to Questlove dubbing her early sound “soul-appella.” In addition to a stirring performance on the renowned COLORS Studio platform, McFerrin has also performed at Lincoln Center, Central Park SummerStage and BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn, and shared stages with the likes of De La Soul, Gallant, and The Roots. Off the stage, Madison’s music has been featured in episodes of Comedy Central’s Broad City and HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness. Working at the intersection of artistry and community building, McFerrin co-curated programming for the BRIC Jazz Festival in 2021, and in 2022, aligned her MAD LOVE initiative with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy to provide some much needed space for healing from the collective trauma of the pandemic. Last fall, she mesmerized crowds at sold out shows in London and Paris during her It’s Been Too Long… European tour and made her debut at the Corona Capital Festival after releasing, "Stay Away (From Me)," which she performed live on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s  #LateShowMeMusic series. Ahead of releasing new music in 2023, Madison has continued to blow away sold out crowds at shows in New York City and Los Angeles.

The Future of St. James Park

One of San Jose's most underutilized resources is St. James Park. It has such a great location and historical significance, yet it has become little more than a bastion for the homeless. The SJDA is doing their best to activate it with movies and yoga, but the park itself needs to change. This is especially needed with several high-density housing projects planned for the immediate area.

Now, plans to transform St. James into a modern flagship community amenity are coming together.

Below are illustrations of the new spaces that are being planned that will offer a variety of experiences. These includes a live music venue, children's park, dog park, and plenty of open spaces. All this while keeping the original trees, fountains, and statues. The ETA to see this to fruition is 2028. It sounds like an eternity, but this could be St. James Park in less than 5 years.

We are proud to announce that the Fall Concert Series began with a performance from Antibalas on October 2^nd, 3pm – 6:30pm. It’s hard to believe that more than twenty years have passed since Antibalas’s humble beginning as a neighborhood dance / protest band in the block parties and underground parties in pre-gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Over the past two decades they have evolved into what The Guardian called “one of the world’s finest Afrobeat bands” while enjoying equal renown for their cross-genre collaborations with legends of popular music. Opening for Antibalas will be Salinas locals, Quiensave. ¿Qiensave? is a Cumbia Urbana group from Salinas California with roots stretching back to Michoacán, Mexico. They create high energy dance music that has fortunately blessed them with the opportunity to travel throughout California, Arizona, Mexico, and Colombia.

 

October 9^th Lyrics Born, the “funkiest rapper alive” took the stage from 3p – 6:30pm. Known for weaving funk and soul into classic, boom-bap Hip Hop, his energy electrified the crowd!

 

Jose James performed on October 16^th. Known as a jazz artist for the hip-hop generation, José James artfully blurs the lines between traditional and contemporary jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, pop and rock. San Jose’s own Jackie Gage will open with her velvety voice, uplifting songwriting, and transcendent music.

 

October 23rd will welcome Latin Folk songstress, La Doňa from 3pm – 6:30pm. La Doña, born Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea in San Francisco, California, is a solo reggaeton singer, songwriter and multi- instrumentalist. The Chicana artist began her career at age 7 playing trumpet, and later strings and percussion in her family’s conjunto. She also played in a youth salsa band and a Balkan fusion band before synthesizing her unique upbringing in her original compositions. La Doña combines her deep roots in Latin folk traditions like corridos and rumba with the propulsive modern sounds of reggaeton, cumbia, and hip hop. Mosaic Organization will begin the show with a variety of cultural performances ranging from dance to live musical performance.

 

The Fall Concert Series will close on October 30^th with performances from San Jose local, Will Sprott and Orgone, whose sound draws from 1960s and 1970s-era funk and soul.
