Super Bowl Weekend Ignites Downtown San Jose with Massive Crowds and Electric Nights

From February 6 through 8, Downtown San Jose pulsed with the energy of Super Bowl fans who turned streets into a whirlwind of celebration. Tens of thousands gathered for a block party, two major concerts, a dazzling drone display, and endless options for food and beverages.

The concerts stole the show, with Bay Area native Kehlani commanding the stage on Friday and Australian DJ Dom Dolla following up on Saturday. Throngs packed the area from the Fourth Street stage clear to Sixth Street, leaving barely room to breathe amid the sea of swaying bodies. City planners had hoped for around 10,000 attendees per night, yet the turnout shattered those figures, proving the draw of free, high-caliber entertainment in the heart of the city.

Over in San Pedro Square, an entertainment zone let revelers carry drinks from bars straight into the open streets, amplifying the festive chaos. Come game day, fans without stadium tickets crammed around venues like O'Flaherty's and Dr. Funk, spilling onto sidewalks to catch glimpses of the action on indoor screens. Local business owners noted surges in activity, with some spots pulling in three to four times their usual weekend haul, thanks to the influx of out-of-towners seeking a lively spot to root for their teams.

This whirlwind weekend showcases how San Jose has sharpened its edge in hosting big-league gatherings, narrowing the distance from events of a decade past. With eyes now on upcoming spectacles like the World Cup and NCAA West Regional, San Jose will build on this success to draw even more visitors. Leaders grade the execution as top-tier, a solid affirmation that thoughtful planning yields lasting ripples in community spirit and economic vitality.

Guitar Wars and The Void Celebrate Grand Opening in Downtown San Jose

San Jose is getting a new boost to its music landscape with the arrival of Guitar Wars and The Void at 447 South First Street in Downtown San Jose. The city is supporting the launch with a ribbon cutting ceremony today, starting at 3 p.m. Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, the San Jose Downtown Association, and owners Carlos Gascon and Josiah Kverno will share remarks. S.J. Sharkie joins as a special guest, bringing energy for families and offering photo opportunities during the event.

Guitar Wars began in 2013 at 4110 Monterey Highway in the Seven Trees neighborhood, where it built a loyal following over 12 years. Now relocating Downtown, the store focuses on musical instruments alongside The Void, a repair shop dedicated to affordable, high-quality service. Formed by a close-knit group of family, friends, musicians, and gear enthusiasts, Guitar Wars fosters a fun, inclusive environment tied to music culture. Its name nods to sci-fi themes and the drive behind every player's setup. The Void addresses needs in instrument maintenance and the broader scene, making sure budget constraints do not limit access to reliable care.

The celebration extends beyond the ceremony with live sets from local bands, a guitar raffle, and displays from area artists. Come February, music lessons launch, along with open mics and various events. The shop plans workshops on maintenance basics, electronics for guitars, and general upkeep to suit beginners and pros alike. This setup creates a central spot for discovering, practicing, and linking up within San Jose's music world.

Downtown San Jose thrives with its arts and festivals, including SoFA, blues, and jazz gatherings, but lacks robust music retail options. Guitar Wars steps in to bridge that, positioning itself amid the action to aid performers and enrich the community.

From family-owned boutiques to cozy eateries, these areas offer one-of-a-kind experiences that capture the essence of San Jose's diverse communities. Participating in Holiday San Jose means investing directly in the city's future, as every purchase helps sustain jobs and contributes to the local economy. Dollars spent here circulate within the community, supporting entrepreneurs who bring cultural richness and innovation to San Jose. Neighborhoods like Winchester Row and Downtown San Jose stand out with their mix of historic charm and modern appeal, providing perfect settings for holiday outings. Business associations have collaborated to create maps and promotional materials that make it easy to explore these districts, whether on foot or by public transit.

Pretty Good Advice Opens in Downtown San Jose: Elevating Vegetarian Eats with Local Roots

9am UPDATE: Ribbon Cutting has been postponed, new date will be shared soon.

Pretty Good Advice is celebrating its grand opening at 125 Paseo de San Antonio in Downtown San Jose today. The event kicks off at 12:15 p.m., with remarks and a ribbon cutting starting at 12:20 p.m. Speakers include Mayor Mahan, Councilmember Tordillos, representatives from the San Jose Downtown Association, and owner Matt McNamara. This marks the restaurant's third location and its first in San Jose, following outposts in Santa Cruz and Soquel, taking over the space once occupied by a Togo's that closed in 2024.

Owner Matt McNamara, a South Bay native who attended Bellarmine College Prep, brings a wealth of experience from Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe and the United States. His journey led to founding Sons & Daughters in San Francisco, which earned a Michelin star shortly after opening. In 2013, McNamara acquired an 83-acre farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains to grow fruits, herbs, mushrooms, and perennials, shifting his focus toward making high-quality, seasonal food accessible beyond fine dining settings. Pretty Good Advice emerged from this vision, offering a 100% vegetarian menu with vegan options, crafted with technique and care from local farms at approachable prices.

This addition enriches San Jose's diverse dining landscape, where McNamara sees the city as the top food destination in the United States right now. The restaurant's unique concept aligns with the area's blend of flavors and innovation, inviting locals and visitors to explore new vegetarian dishes amid a scene already packed with global cuisines.

Silicon Valley Asian Art Center Opens in Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose welcomed a new cultural gem with the opening of the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center at 150 East Santa Clara Street on October 17. The midday ribbon-cutting ceremony featured remarks from Mayor Matt Mahan, Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, representatives from the San Jose Downtown Association, and owner Jianhua Shu. This event marked the expansion of the center from its original Santa Clara location, established in 2004, which has long showcased modern and ancient artworks. The new space shifts emphasis to contemporary and digital arts, enriching the city's artistic offerings.

The opening coincided with the reception for Zheng Chongbin: The Field of Shui Mo, an exhibition displaying 16 works by the acclaimed artist, including paintings, videos, and monoprints. The highlight, Chimeric Landscape from 2012, measures 180 by 720 centimeters across multiple panels and appeared in the United States for the first time. Zheng Chongbin attended the event and shared insights into his creations, drawing attendees into a world of innovative expression that blends traditional techniques with modern forms.

Founder Jianhua Shu brings extensive experience to the venture, having served as an art advisor, co-curator, and former editor and producer with a portfolio of over 70 books and more than 100 exhibitions. Since its inception, the Santa Clara center has hosted over 200 shows, promoting Chinese American art globally and collaborating with major museums in China. This background fuels the new location's mission to foster cultural exchange through displays of Asian and international artists.

Visitors to the Downtown San Jose gallery can anticipate programming that encourages dialogue between cultures and makes art approachable for locals and professionals alike. Downtown's central role in Silicon Valley, where technology meets diverse communities, provides an ideal setting for such a space. The center aims to enhance the area's cultural vitality and accessibility.

San Jose Steps Up as Premier Entertainment Destination for 2026 and Beyond

San Jose is transforming its Downtown core into a lively center for events and gatherings, setting the stage for an unforgettable 2026. The city council's recent unanimous vote turned Post Street into a pedestrian mall, much like the beloved San Pedro Square, enhancing walkability and inviting more foot traffic. This move, coupled with the approval of six new entertainment districts Downtown, opens doors for organizers to host vibrant events where people can enjoy drinks while strolling the streets. Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted these zones as essential for fostering a dynamic atmosphere, and now the city awaits proposals from creative minds to bring them to life.

Major events on the horizon promise to elevate San Jose's profile significantly. With Super Bowl LX and FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium in nearby Santa Clara, the Bay Area expects around 350,000 visitors from outside the region, generating about $600 million in labor income. Local leaders like San Jose Downtown Association interim CEO Gumby Marques emphasize the importance of showcasing Downtown's best features to build lasting civic pride. Ongoing beautification efforts, including murals and improvements along the Santa Clara corridor, add to the appeal, ensuring the city shines not just for 2026 but beyond.

Established festivals and conventions already demonstrate San Jose's growing draw. The Fountain Blues & Brews festival marked its 42nd year in June with record attendance of about 5,000 people, fueled by live music and a strong sense of community. FanimeCon, the city's largest convention this year, boosted local businesses like Pizza My Heart to historic revenue highs. Nvidia's GTC conference brought a 132% surge in restaurant visits, while events featuring DJs like Steve Aoki and Fisher drew thousands to plazas and streets. These successes underline how events vitalize Downtown and position San Jose as a must-visit spot.

Beyond events, hospitality plays a key role in sustaining this momentum. San Jose boasts 4,500 hotel rooms Downtown and 10,000 citywide, though experts like Sharks Sports & Entertainment president Jonathan Becher call for a shift toward family-friendly designs to attract more leisure travelers. Overcoming the image of a mere business stopover, the city is prioritizing entertainment and arts to stand out. With upcoming highlights like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and NWSL National Championship, San Jose is aligning investments to claim its spot as the West's sports and entertainment capital.
