Downtown San Jose Welcomes Sumi Sushi - Affordable Japanese Cuisine

Sumi Sushi's commitment to affordability without compromising on quality is a standout feature. Owner Terry Tien's vision for the restaurant is clear: to provide the local community and visitors with high-quality Japanese cuisine that doesn't break the bank. This mission is a refreshing take in a market where good sushi often comes with a hefty price tag.

The restaurant aims to challenge the notion that excellent sushi must be expensive, making it accessible to a broader audience. This approach not only caters to sushi enthusiasts but also invites newcomers to explore Japanese cuisine without financial hesitation. The menu promises a variety of dishes that reflect traditional Japanese flavors, crafted with care and authenticity.

Owner Terry Tien's connection to Downtown San Jose is deeply personal. He views the area as a vibrant community with a unique blend of heart and brain, reflecting his genuine appreciation for the city's character and its people. Tien's decision to open Sumi Sushi here is not just a business choice but a testament to his belief in the area's potential and charm. His enthusiasm for being part of Downtown San Jose's growth and vibrancy is evident, and it sets a positive tone for the restaurant's role in the community. Additionally, Tien plans to open Meimei Dumpling next door at 117 Paseo de San Antonio in June, further expanding his culinary footprint in the area.

For those eager to experience Sumi Sushi, the restaurant promises a welcoming atmosphere with ample indoor seating and a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Early reviews suggest that the restaurant has already made a positive impression, with patrons praising its affordability and the staff's attentiveness. The restaurant's proximity to San Jose State University also positions it as a convenient dining option for students and faculty, adding to its potential for success. As Downtown San Jose continues to evolve, Sumi Sushi stands as a symbol of the area's growing appeal and the entrepreneurial spirit that drives it.

Sumi Sushi is located at 119 Paseo De San Antonio and is open from 11am to 9pm every day.

Jackie’s Place Brings Soulful Flavors to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose will get a little bit tastier with the arrival of Jackie’s Place, a brand-new restaurant serving up authentic soul food. This will be Downtown San Jose's first dedicated soul food restaurant and the second location for Jackie's Place. The original is in Japantown and has a Yelp rating of 4.5 with 1,700 reviews.

Nestled in the heart of SoFA, this spot is ready to dish out plates piled high with Southern classics—think crispy fried chicken, slow-cooked collard greens, and mac and cheese. It's located right next to Nirvana Soul, one of the hottest coffee shops in Downtown San Jose.

What’s even better? Jackie’s Place is rooting itself in San Jose by sourcing fresh ingredients from nearby farms and suppliers. It’s a small but meaningful way this restaurant is giving back, creating jobs and strengthening the local food chain. The cozy setup—wooden tables, soft lighting, and the mouthwatering aroma of fried goodness—only adds to the draw.

Downtown San Jose’s food scene is already a melting pot of flavors, and Jackie’s Place is a delicious new thread in that tapestry. The grand opening of Jackie's Place will take place on April 27 during the SoFA District block party.
