Downtown San Jose Restaurant List Updates! (Q1 2013 Edition)

I have done the latest round of updates to the Downtown San Jose Restaurants database and I think Downtown is just about hit the critical mass needed to really be seen as a restaurant destination similar to Willow Glen, Santana Row, or Downtown Palo Alto / Mountain View / Campbell. The number of new restaurants is not only up, but the quality of these new venues is outstanding. We are up to a grand total of 242 eateries, the latest record for Downtown San Jose.

This is our second quarter with no bad news, no significant closures. The restaurants that have lasted through the last major downturn are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and are here to stay. The one closure worth mentioning is Chevy's in the San Jose Market Center (this was the worst Chevy's I have been to in my life) and it is being replaced with a BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse.

Now the good news, and you might want to grab some coffee because it is a long list:
  • Cafe Stritch - Meet the new SoFA anchor venue. The menu is inexpensive, casual, and delicious, they have a great bar, live music will be coming 3-5 times per week, they are building an art gallery on the second floor, oh and they have the coolest outdoor seating in Downtown San Jose. Half a dozen other improvements are coming over the next few weeks. Have to check it out during South First Fridays.
  • Nemea Greek Taverna - Just got to try this out last night. Nemea is located at 1st and San Fernando, one of our "key corners." The ambiance looks incredible, it has the most polished interior Downtown right now. The fare is on the higher-end side and everything I had was fantastic. In fact it puts Thea to shame in Santana Row and is pretty close to Dio Deka in Los Gatos. They will be featuring live Greek music every Friday and also have a great outdoor dining space. I was a big fan of E&O, but this surpasses it in every way. 4.5 stars on Yelp!
  • Vyne - Great new wine bar and bistro! Hip, chic atmosphere, great happy hour, and a great food menu. They are the only place Downtown I can think of that has a caviar plate. Also 4.5 stars on Yelp.
  • K zzang - Welcome to Downtown San Jose's first and only Korean restaurant (that I can remember at least). I had to add a new Genre for this one. Have not been here yet, but the menu looks great (Bulgogi, Bibimbaps, etc.). This is located a few spaces down from Nemea.
  • Amir Restaurant - The former Morocco's space has a new tenant! Amir is a casual mediterranean restaurant with geneous portions and reasonable prices. It is locally owned and has a stellar 4.5 Yelp rating (are you noticing the trend here?).
  • Grub Shack - Yet another great restaurant. This one is on 93 E. Santa Clara Street and the food is a mix of Hawaiian, Chinese, and Japanese food. 4.5 starts on Yelp with over 100 reviews.
  • San Pedro Square Market Updates
    • Chocatoo - Great new dessert and coffee shop inside of the Lusardi building (Blush, Treatbot, Phonomenal). Wide selection, knowledgeable staff,
    • Market Beer Company - replacing Polkadotz Mini Gourmet Cupcakes. Will feature a huge assortment of craft beers for visitors: over 300 refrigerated craft brews (either bomber 22-oz bottles or 750-ml bottles) as well as 5-10 beers on tap.
    • B2 Coffee - they have moved to their permanent spot in the corner of the "garage" area. They now have way more space, their own bathrooms, and new seating options.
    • Garage Bar - a brand new bar that they are opening at night time in the same "garage" area where B2 Coffee is located.
    • Konjoe Burger Bar (Coming Soon) - Handmade, contemporary, Asian-American burgers using freshly ground patties and exotic ingredients.
    • Bray Butcher Block & Bistro (Coming Soon) - This is for all of those that have been complaining that there is no traditional Market in the Market. Bray will bring a full selection of deli meats, fish, steaks, house-made sausages, and BBQ dishes.
  • Other Places Coming Soon
    • Orchestria Palm Court - Now this is going to be interesting. Palm Court is a cafe opening behind the Stage Theater in a 1910 brick structure and will feature music from the early part of the last century played on mechanical music machines. The menu will be healthy European cuisine prepared in old-fashioned ways. You will also find fountain drinks with natural fresh-squeezed fruit juices.
    • The Farmer's Union - A new two-story Ale House/Sports Bar at San Pedro and Santa Clara Street with 60 beers on tap and the largest TV screen in Silicon Valley. It will be decorated with items from San Jose's history and serve traditional American fare. Tremendous potential with this restaurant and it sits on a key corner.
    • The Blackbird Tavern - My most highly anticipated restaurant opening in the queue right now. If anyone can turn around the corner lot that hosted Zing, Asquew Grill, and Ruffled Feathers Eatery... it's these guys from the Naglee Park Garage. Similar to the Original Gravity House, this can be a game changer. Expect an outstanding beer selection, tapas, live music, and a laid back atmosphere right in the middle of Downtown San Jose (across the street from where the Muji flagship Japanese retail store will go and next to Camera 12 and the Fairmont)
    • Cafe Eden - Supposed to be coming to 2 N. First but cannot find any additional info.
    • Chromatic Coffee - They bought the building at 19 N 2nd St and will be moving their roasting facilities there and open a cafe.
    • ISO: Beers - New craft beer shop and lounge on Santa Clara that should compliment places like Original Gravity and Good Karma quite nicely.
    • Ike's Place - One of the best sandwich chains ever, coming to the SJSU area around summer time.

As for the latest status update on my mission to eat at every single restaurant in Downtown San Jose... I'm at 218 out of 242, or 90%. So many new restaurants opened up I am actually a bit behind last quarter!

Below is the changelog from the Downtown San Jose Restaurants Database:
  • 12/16/2012 Updated hours and contact info for La Lune Sucree
  • 12/16/2012 Taza on Santa Clara street closed
  • 12/31/2012 Added ISO: Beers

Wednesday Wishlist: Michelin Star Restaurants (2013 Edition)

I do this rant every year and will continue to do so until San Jose nabs a Michelin star restaurant. For the non-foodies out there, a Michelin star represents one of the highest achievements and forms of recognition that a restaurant can get. There are three different rankings:

One Star - A very good restaurant in its category with cuisine prepared to a consistently high standard. A good place to stop on your journey.
Two Stars - Excellent cuisine, skillfully and carefully crafted dishes of outstanding quality. Worth a detour.
Three Stars - Exceptional cuisine with distinctive dishes and superlative ingredients. Worth a special journey.

I have gone ahead and made a Google doc listing all of the 2013 Bay Area Michelin star recipients as well as the recipients for each year since Bay Area restaurants started being evaluated in 2007. This data was surprisingly not that easy to aggregate since it was hard to find the lists of early recipients. If you open the doc, you will also notice a Stats tab on the bottom that shows how things have evolved over the years.

In 2007 the Bay Area received a total of 34 stars across 28 restaurants. Only 2 restaurants were in the South Bay (7% of the total). For 2013, the Bay Area received 52 stars across 42 restaurants and 5 were in the South Bay (12%). So there is definitely some improvement for the region as a whole, but unfortunately there is yet to be a single San Jose recipient. I have been to quite a few on the list below (13 of them in fact), and there are at least two San Jose restaurants that should definitely be there. Le Papillion and La Foret, which are sister restaurants and offer phenomenal food and service equal to many of the places on the list. I also have high hopes that new aspiring chefs will decide to open up restaurants Downtown that may one day qualify for a star.

You can check out the full Google doc here. The South Bay restaurants are highlighted in yellow and the Peninsula restaurants in northern Silicon Valley are highlighted in blue.

P.S. Hat tip to All Spice in San Mateo for being the first Indian restaurant to make the cut in the US as far as I know.

Downtown San Jose Restaurant List Updates! (Q4 2012 Edition)

I am trying to update the Downtown San Jose Restaurants database more regularly now. We are up to an impressive 234 eateries, which is easily the largest number of restaurants Downtown San Jose has ever had and very likely the largest concentration of restaurants anywhere in Silicon Valley (including Downtown Palo Alto, Mountain View, Campbell, and Los Gatos).

No bad news this quarter, no major closures. A Perfect Finish is being remodeled and is going to relaunch as 55 South Market.

Now the good news.
  • Many New San Pedro Square Market Eateries - I added Sama-Zama, Treatbot, Loteria Taco Bar, CaliDog, Phonomental, and Polkadotz Mini Gourmet Cupcakes to the list. If you haven't been to the Market in the past couple months, you won't believe how many more options there are. The amount of quality eats here is helping put Downtown on the map for South Bay foodies.
  • The Blackbird Tavern - This is my most highly anticipated restaurant opening in the queue right now.
  • Dosa & Curry Cafe - Not only is this a quality Indian restaurant with reasonable prices, they have updated their hours so that they are open until 3am Thurs through Sat! As far as I know, this is the only Indian Restaurant in Silicon Valley (maybe even in the Bay Area) open this late.

As for the latest status update on my mission to eat at every single restaurant in Downtown San Jose... I'm at 220 out of 234, or 94%. I think 2013 will be the year I complete my culinary goal, but the real question is which restaurant should I save for last?

Below is the changelog from the Downtown San Jose Restaurants Database:
  • 11/11/2012 Updated Dosa & Curry Cafe's hours, first San Jose Indian restaurant open until 3am
  • 12/2/2012 Added Treatbot Factory, Sama-Zama, Loteria Taco Bar, CaliDog, Phonomenal, and Polkadotz Mini Gourmet Cupcakes to the list (all in San Pedro Square Market)
  • 12/2/2012 Punjab Cafe has expanded and added a new Indian Ice Cream shop
  • 12/2/2012 A Perfect Finish has remodeled into 55 South First

Downtown San Jose Restaurant List Updates! (Q3 2012 Edition)

It has been a while since I updated the Downtown San Jose Restaurants database, but I now think everything is up to date (if not please let me know). We are now up to 227 eateries, which is Downtown's new record!

First off, some bad news. Morocco's--which used to be my favorite restaurant Downtown--is now only open in Mountain View. They are looking for a new location in the San Jose area but don't have any sort of timeline. Blendz is also closed.

Now the good news. 5 brand new eateries with 4.5 star yelp reviews!

  • Original Gravity House - OMG, epic new addition Downtown. 20 craft beers on tab that are constantly changing, home-made gourmet sausages, duck-fat fries, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches... oh did I mention the 20 craft beers on tap?
  • Back A Yard - Carribean restaurant where Gumbo Jumbo used to be, over 100 Yelp reviews already.
  • Dosa & Curry - New Indian/Pakistani restaurant where Los Gallos De Villa used to be, right by SJSU.
  • Zenon's Place - Reinvention of Nazca Peruvian on San Fernando
  • Devine Grind - New Coffee Shop and breakfast place on Devine and 2nd Streets

Oh but there is more. Little Cheese Shop is now open in the San Pedro Square Market, offering the best cheeses you can find in the South Bay along with gourmet spreads, crackers, and exotic beverages. Whipps is now Cafe Bonne Terre, they still have frozen fruit desserts but have added crepes to the menu. Shellena's Cafe in SoFA is now Just Hot Dogs.

As for the latest status update on my mission to eat at every single restaurant in Downtown San Jose... I'm at 209 out of 227, or 92%. It is now becoming very difficult to try new places with so many amazing restaurants I want to go back to again and again.

Below is the changelog from the Downtown San Jose Restaurants Database:
  • 2/26/2012 Added Sa-By Thai in SoFA
  • 2/26/2012 Replaced Miro's with the Hyatt Place Bakery Cafe
  • 4/7/2012 Added Cre-Paris and Blush to the list (new San Pedro Square Market restaurants)
  • 9/9/2012 Added Morocco's to the Closed DTSJ Restaurants list (rent was too high).
  • 9/9/2012 Added Blendz to the Closed DTSJ Restaurants list
  • 9/9/2012 Added Back a Yard Restaurant
  • 9/9/2012 Added Yelp information to Original Gravity Public House
  • 9/9/2012 Added Devine Grind on Devine and 2nd Streets
  • 9/9/2012 Added Little Cheese Shoppe in the San Pedro Square Market
  • 9/9/2012 Replaced Nazca with Zenon's Place
  • 9/9/2012 Replaced Whipps with Cafe Bonne Terre

Wednesday Wishlist: Morimoto

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to try out Morimoto in Napa, probably the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. By the end of the meal, all I could think of was that I want this place in San Jose.

If you could pick one restaurant to bring to San Jose, what would it be?

Downtown San Jose Restaurant List Updates!

Several changes have been made to the Downtown San Jose Restaurants database over the past 2 months. We are now up to a staggering 206 restaurants, which I believe is the largest number of eateries in the history of Downtown! New additions are Crema, La Lune Sucree, Yogurtland, Zanatto's Deli, Bijan Cafe (which is actually a wine bar) and of course our first two San Pedro Square Market Restaurants: Pizza Boca Lupo and Vino Vino. We also have at least 7 restaurants that are currently under construction!

As as side note, I'm getting much closer to completing my mission of going to every restaurant in Downtown San Jose. Of the 206 restaurants currently open, I have eaten at 186 of them (90%).

Below is the changelog from the Downtown San Jose Restaurants Database:
  • 7/22/2011 Added Yogurtland on 125 E. San Carlos St.
  • 8/19/2011 Replaced Cafe 1850 with Crema
  • 8/19/2011 A Taste of Paris Closed (Chef moved to Paris)
  • 8/19/2011 Added Outdoor Seating to Good Karma

  • 9/3/2011         La Lune Sucree has opened where A Taste of Paris used to be

Silicon Valley Restaurant Week 2011

Silicon Valley Restaurant Week kicks off today and features a substantial number of San Jose restaurants. Each restaurant will offer a discounted 3-course dinner menu with at least 3 options for each course. Also menu items will represent the restaurants typical portion size and quality... just because it is 3 courses doesn't mean the portions will be skimped out on. The feasting continues all the way up until September 21st.

Underground Dining in San Jose: Part 2

Well, well, well... what do we have here? Another underground dining establishment in San Jose called The Wooden Table! I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and guess the suggested donation is going to be more than $45 for this one =). If you're a foodie, I think this one's for you.

Underground Dining in San Jose

A friend came across an underground Italian supper club called Segreto (means Secret). The way this works is a group of up to 20 diners meets up on select dates and gets treated to a 4-course family-style dinner featuring rustic Italian food. Instead of a price, there is a "suggested donation" of $45, which seems perfectly in line with the home-cooked food they are serving based on the photos I've seen. This may be worth a look right over here.

Restaurants

CAMPBELL

logo-twist_200
Twist Cafe & Twist Bistro
245 & 247 E. Campbell Ave
Campbell, CA 95008
408 374-8982
Although it’s an unassuming neighborhood cafe, Twist Cafe packs some culinary firepower. Co-owner Dominique Faury cooked for years in top U.S. and European restaurants, including Le Bristol, Taillevent and Apicius, Parisian restaurants that earned two and three Michelin stars. Before opening Twist, Dominique’s partner Eileen Faury was executive chef at the Westin Hotel in Palo Alto. Because of the café’s popularity, Twist expanded into the space next door to open Twist Bistro. The bistro menu is decidedly more French than the café and the setting more elegant.

CUPERTINO

logo_fontanas200Fontana’s Italian Restaurant

Cupertino, CA 95014
408 725-0188
Founded in 1984, Fontana’s Italian continues to servean appealing Italian cuisine that draws on a California-Mediterranean influences. Specialties include scalone indorati, scallop and abalone steak sautéed in egg batter with lemon-butter sauce; rack of lamb with goat cheese mashed potatoes; and filetto alla griglia, beef tenderloin with roasted potatoes, portobella mushrooms and spinach, topped with gorgonzola and a red wine sauce. Full bar and diverse wine list.

logo_parkplace200Park Place
10030 S. De Anza Blvd.
Cupertino, CA 95014
408 873-1000
Cupertino’s Park Place is the city’s top choice for fine dining. Located at the prominent corner of Stevens Creek and De Anza boulevards, Park Place combines a plush and inviting dining room and ample outdoor seating with Executive Chef Brad Kraten’s creative, globe trotting menu of dishes like tuna tartare, duck confit nacho, flatbread pizzas and more substantial dishes like the red wine braised boneless short ribs and sautéed sea bass with andouille sausage spiked jambalaya.

EAST PALO ALTO

logo200_quattroQuattro
2050 University Avenue
East Palo Alto, CA 94303
650 470-2889
Quattro Restaurant and Bar brings high-style, impeccably sourced Italian cuisine to Silicon Valley. Chef Alessandro Cartumini creates an ever-changing menu of modern Italian food that leaves spaghetti and meatballs far behind. The restaurant itself is a beauty. Located in East Palo Alto’s Four Seasons hotel off Highway 101, the restaurant has a sleek modern feel that’s airy and inviting. Contemporary paintings and sculptures on the walls add to the effect. There’s also an appealing outdoor dining area .

LOS ALTOS

ZituneZitune
325 Main Street
Los Altos, CA 94022
650 947-0247
Los Altos is a sleepy Silicon Valley suburb, Zitune offers a welcome—and needed—taste of big-city dining. Morocco was colonized by the French and has strong Mediterranean influences in its cuisine, so Moroccan food is familiar, but ingredients like preserved lemon, harissa and argan oil ring it in an exotic glow. Meals at Zitune start with a dish of harissa (a spiced chile pepper and garlic paste) scented hummus, olives and a light eggplant salsa. It’s a great opener for what’s to come. The rest of menu pairs traditional Moroccan ingredients and preparation with an undated, modern style.

LOS GATOS

logo_calcafe200California Cafe
50 University Ave # 260
Los Gatos, CA 95030
408 354-8118
The California Café continues to satisfy with its fresh, inventive and reasonably priced menu of seasonal California-meets-the-world fare from Chef Taylor Boudreaux. Great cocktail list, too. The shaded patio and second-story dining atop Old Town makes the restaurant feel like a Santa Cruz Mountain hideaway.

logo200_LGBrewingCoLos Gatos Brewing Company
130 N Santa Cruz Ave.
Los Gatos CA 95030
408 395-9929
Acclaimed chef Jim Stump refined the microbrewery concept to an elegant sit-down restaurant that’s both casual and sophisticated. The Los Gatos Brewing Company serves a menu of California cuisine with hand crafted artisan brews in an artfully restored former auto dealership building in Downtown Los Gatos that’s become a favorite dining spot of locals.

logo_tapestry_200Tapestry
11 College Ave.
Los Gatos, CA 95030
408 395-2808
Set inside a beautiful downtown Los Gatos Craftsman building, Tapestry continues to serve refined version of California-Asian bistro fare like grilled romaine salad, creative spring rolls, grilled skirt steak, fresh fish and inventive desserts. The intimate dining room adds to the restaurant’s enduring appeal as a dinner date destination.

Logo-Valerianos
Valeriano’s Italian Restaurant
160 West Main Street
Los Gatos, CA 95030
408 354-8108
