Super Bowl 60 Epic Pre-Game with the Players Tailgate

Super Bowl 60 was one of the most successful South Bay events of all time, bringing activity to all corners of San Jose and Santa Clara. However, on game day there was one experience that really stood out. I was lucky enough to attend the Players Tailgate. This exclusive pre-game gathering draws over 50 active NFL players, celebrities, and guests for a mix of food, drinks, and entertainment right before kickoff. Hosted by Nate Burleson with DJ Irie on the decks, the event turned game day into a full celebration, complete with open premium bars and all-you-can-eat gourmet dishes from celebrity chefs.

Attendees got to enjoy unique activations like the Delish Showdown, where top chefs compete in a high-energy cooking battle, and Solo Stove's Squash the Beef setup for smashing burgers over open flames to settle rivalries. The lineup featured chefs such as Aaron May, Marc Murphy, Kelsey Murphy, Aarón Sanchez, Tristen Epps, Shota Nakajima, Josh Capon, Adam Sobel, Catherine McCord, Leah Cohen, Chris Cosentino, and Damaris Phillips, alongside the 10/10 Burger team.

Pro athletes including Puka Nacua, Jahmyr Gibbs, Tyreek Hill, Rome Odunze, Najee Harris, Brian Robinson Jr., Trey McBride, Deebo Samuel, and many others. They were mostly just out and about enjoying the awesome food like everyone else.

Players Tailgate is sponsored by Ortega, Skinnygirl, Organic Valley, Molson Coors, Columbia, Verizon Visa Card, Ballers Champagne, XCLSV, Solo Stove, Desnuda, Worth Magazine, the NFL Alumni Association, Delish Showdown, Square, Food Recovery Network, Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice, and Meta. Guests can sample the debut of Nature Calls, a beverage made with Montana bear poop (no joke) in partnership with Columbia Sportswear and Battle Creek Coffee, focused on sustainability.

The food was simply put, spectacular. My favorites included Chris Cosentino's Montreal-style Pastrami & Caviar Creme Fraiche Sandwich, JJ Johnson's Jerk Lamb Ribs with Plantain Puree, and Shota Nakajima's Katsu Sando Pork Cutlet. However, my absolute favorite was Belle English's 48 Hour Pork Rib with Fish Sauce Caramel and Sesame Brittle. Photographs are in order of mention below.

The sponsors had their own booths setup with food and surprises. As previously mentioned, they even had a limited edition beer called "Nature Calls" that is brewed with purified bear poop, something I wish I read before I drank it. Spoiler alert, it just tastes like beer.

After packing away several thousand calories and heading home for a pre-game nap, I realized that for a foodie this epic tailgate might be better than the actual Super Bowl. The next Players Tailgate takes place on Valentine's Day 2027 at SoFI Stadium in LA. It's pricey but you'll get an unforgettable experience.

Super Bowl Weekend Ignites Downtown San Jose with Massive Crowds and Electric Nights

From February 6 through 8, Downtown San Jose pulsed with the energy of Super Bowl fans who turned streets into a whirlwind of celebration. Tens of thousands gathered for a block party, two major concerts, a dazzling drone display, and endless options for food and beverages.

The concerts stole the show, with Bay Area native Kehlani commanding the stage on Friday and Australian DJ Dom Dolla following up on Saturday. Throngs packed the area from the Fourth Street stage clear to Sixth Street, leaving barely room to breathe amid the sea of swaying bodies. City planners had hoped for around 10,000 attendees per night, yet the turnout shattered those figures, proving the draw of free, high-caliber entertainment in the heart of the city.

Over in San Pedro Square, an entertainment zone let revelers carry drinks from bars straight into the open streets, amplifying the festive chaos. Come game day, fans without stadium tickets crammed around venues like O'Flaherty's and Dr. Funk, spilling onto sidewalks to catch glimpses of the action on indoor screens. Local business owners noted surges in activity, with some spots pulling in three to four times their usual weekend haul, thanks to the influx of out-of-towners seeking a lively spot to root for their teams.

This whirlwind weekend showcases how San Jose has sharpened its edge in hosting big-league gatherings, narrowing the distance from events of a decade past. With eyes now on upcoming spectacles like the World Cup and NCAA West Regional, San Jose will build on this success to draw even more visitors. Leaders grade the execution as top-tier, a solid affirmation that thoughtful planning yields lasting ripples in community spirit and economic vitality.

San Jose Super Bowl Festivities

I'll break from my typical format for a quick blurb. Downtown San Jose was more alive today than at any point I can remember. Every street was packed, music was everywhere from the stages to the lowriders cruising the streets, and street food was abundant all throughout the area. San Pedro Square was booming, but so was SoFA, and all of Santa Clara Street. The free drone show at Discovery Meadows was also excellent.

If you have the opportunity to get to Downtown tomorrow, take it. There is so much going on that it feels like a completely different city. I hope this becomes the new normal after the Super Bowl and World Cup are over!

San Jose Launches Game On Youth Sports Program Ahead of Epic 2026 Events

San Jose is introducing the Game On youth sports program, designed to inspire thousands of local students and community members. Officials gathered at the Boys & Girls Club of Silicon Valley - Smythe Clubhouse to unveil this initiative, part of the city's SJ26 campaign and backed by the San Jose Sports Authority. From January through June, 50 activations called Game On Moments will roll out at schools and community spots, reaching young people with hands-on sports experiences. Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized turning the year's major events into enduring benefits that extend far past the calendar.

The South Bay hosts Super Bowl LX, three March Madness games, and six World Cup matches between February 8 and July 1, drawing global attention. Former San Jose Earthquakes player Shea Salinas, now a club ambassador, highlighted how preparations for community involvement started with the World Cup announcement. He noted the importance of professional organizations in creating positive change. San Francisco 49ers President Al Guido added that connecting kids with athletes fosters a cycle of inspiration, where pros reflect on their own early influences while guiding the next generation.

To build a lasting legacy, the program focuses on infrastructure like fields, coaches, referees, and leagues to support youth development. Salinas pointed out the need to capitalize on the excitement around soccer and football, ensuring stable environments where kids can grow. This ripple effect aims to instill values that carry forward, with families passing on the passion for sports. Brandi Chastain, founder of Bay FC, introduced goalie Jordan Silkowitz, recently named to the U.S. national team, to show how dedication leads to achievement.

San Jose Raises Nearly $5 Million for Epic 2026 Activations

San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority have secured close to $5 million from corporate, public, and philanthropic partners to support a series of community activations throughout Silicon Valley in 2026. This funding arrives just in time for a major lineup of events, including Super Bowl LX, three March Madness games, and six World Cup matches from February 8 to July 1.

The money will finance over 100 watch parties, 13 concerts featuring national acts like Kehlani, and seven drone shows, with more details forthcoming. Most of these experiences come at no cost to residents and visitors, creating inclusive ways to join the excitement without game tickets. Additional support goes toward local youth programs, ensuring the benefits reach younger community members.

Contributions from Silicon Valley giants such as Adobe, eBay, and Google, along with local entities like Visit San Jose and San Jose Mineta International Airport, make this possible. An estimated 500,000 travelers are expected in the Bay Area for these events, generating $1.4 billion in economic impact that supports hotels, restaurants, small businesses, and cultural areas across the city.

San Jose stands ready to welcome the world in 2026 with an extraordinary lineup of major sporting events, including Super Bowl 60, the FIFA World Cup, NCAA March Madness, and the National Women’s Soccer League Championships. City leaders have introduced fresh branding under the banner of San Jose 26, featuring colorful logos that incorporate beloved local icons such as Santana Row, San Pedro Square, the Sonic Runway, and even the Eggo Waffle, an invention that originated right here. These designs also highlight diverse neighborhoods like Little Saigon, Little Portugal, and the St. Joseph Basilica, blending the city's rich cultural tapestry with playful sports elements like vibrant soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs in a modern font.

To support the influx of nearly half a million visitors, San Jose has launched a dedicated microsite packed with tools for planning itineraries, locating watch parties, and discovering local attractions. Santa Clara Street Shines Brighter with New Beautification Efforts

San Jose has launched an $800,000 initiative to refresh a key section of Santa Clara Street, bringing together the city, the San Jose Downtown Association, and other partners. This project includes 17 targeted improvements, such as repainting buildings, adding murals, and reactivating storefronts. These changes aim to create a more cohesive feel in Downtown San Jose, linking its diverse neighborhoods through thoughtful updates.

The enhancements focus on boosting foot traffic and supporting local businesses that have anchored the area for decades. Establishments like Ngan Tailoring and AK Liquor Store, both operating for over 30 years, receive special attention as a way to recognize their lasting contributions. By drawing more people to the corridor, the project also promotes public safety through increased activity and visibility on the streets.

Downtown San Jose continues its strong recovery from the pandemic, with nighttime visitor levels nearing pre-2020 figures. Initiatives like this corridor upgrade provide the momentum needed to restore and exceed that earlier energy. City leaders view it as the beginning of wider efforts to weave together the various parts of Downtown, fostering a unified urban experience.

With major events on the horizon, including Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup in 2026, these beautifications position San Jose to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors. The refreshed street will showcase the city's offerings, encouraging exploration and investment in local spots. As more projects unfold, Santa Clara Street stands as a promising example of how targeted improvements can elevate the entire community.

San Jose Steps Up as Premier Entertainment Destination for 2026 and Beyond

San Jose is transforming its Downtown core into a lively center for events and gatherings, setting the stage for an unforgettable 2026. The city council's recent unanimous vote turned Post Street into a pedestrian mall, much like the beloved San Pedro Square, enhancing walkability and inviting more foot traffic. This move, coupled with the approval of six new entertainment districts Downtown, opens doors for organizers to host vibrant events where people can enjoy drinks while strolling the streets. Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted these zones as essential for fostering a dynamic atmosphere, and now the city awaits proposals from creative minds to bring them to life.

Major events on the horizon promise to elevate San Jose's profile significantly. With Super Bowl LX and FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium in nearby Santa Clara, the Bay Area expects around 350,000 visitors from outside the region, generating about $600 million in labor income. Local leaders like San Jose Downtown Association interim CEO Gumby Marques emphasize the importance of showcasing Downtown's best features to build lasting civic pride. Ongoing beautification efforts, including murals and improvements along the Santa Clara corridor, add to the appeal, ensuring the city shines not just for 2026 but beyond.

Established festivals and conventions already demonstrate San Jose's growing draw. The Fountain Blues & Brews festival marked its 42nd year in June with record attendance of about 5,000 people, fueled by live music and a strong sense of community. FanimeCon, the city's largest convention this year, boosted local businesses like Pizza My Heart to historic revenue highs. Nvidia's GTC conference brought a 132% surge in restaurant visits, while events featuring DJs like Steve Aoki and Fisher drew thousands to plazas and streets. These successes underline how events vitalize Downtown and position San Jose as a must-visit spot.

Beyond events, hospitality plays a key role in sustaining this momentum. San Jose boasts 4,500 hotel rooms Downtown and 10,000 citywide, though experts like Sharks Sports & Entertainment president Jonathan Becher call for a shift toward family-friendly designs to attract more leisure travelers. Overcoming the image of a mere business stopover, the city is prioritizing entertainment and arts to stand out. With upcoming highlights like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and NWSL National Championship, San Jose is aligning investments to claim its spot as the West's sports and entertainment capital.

Sports Drive San Jose Forward: Preparing for a Spotlight in 2026

San Jose steps into the limelight as Bay Area sports teams lead urban renewal efforts, with city leaders highlighting long-term investments at a recent Business of Sports event. Tommy O’Hare, the city's sports and special events director, emphasized viewing events as ongoing opportunities rather than isolated moments, pointing to initiatives like the stitching districts project that connects San Jose's 10 districts both physically and symbolically. With Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup set for 2026, these gatherings provide a clear timeline to energize the region's largest city through targeted improvements.

Efforts already underway include beautifying the Guadalupe River and refreshing Downtown underpasses with fresh paint, all aimed at welcoming the expected influx of visitors. O’Hare noted that such preparations extend beyond the venues, collaborating with local businesses like Adobe to shape overall visitor experiences. Meanwhile, Bay FC CEO Brady Stewart shared how sports unite communities, expressing enthusiasm for the global attention on the Bay Area, while the team uses technology like fan surveys to refine interactions and achieve high satisfaction scores.

Looking ahead, San Jose envisions a thriving sports and entertainment district in Downtown, potentially featuring one or two stadiums to solidify its position as the heart of Silicon Valley. Bay FC aims high too, aspiring to become the first billion-dollar women’s sports franchise with its own dedicated stadium, moving beyond sharing PayPal Park. These developments promise to foster community ties, support youth programs, and create lasting vibrancy that benefits residents year-round.

Where to watch the Super Bowl in San Jose

Super Bowl LIX starts today at 3:30pm. Our friends at SJ Today have a list of recommendations on where to watch the game. Personally I'm biased toward the San Pedro Square Market since you have a wide variety of food to choose from and can watch either indoors or outdoors.

The Brit is also a great option. They'll be doing Taylor Swift and commercial-themed bingo buring the game as well as raffle prizes and food specials.

Levi's Stadium is getting $200M in upgrades before hosting both the Super Bowl and World Cup

Two of the largest sporting events in the world are coming to Levi's Stadium in 2026: the Super Bowl and multiple World Cup games. In fact it will be the only stadium to ever host both of those events in the same year. The 49ers and Levi's Stadium have recently announced major upgrades to the stadium--which originally cost $1.3 billion to build over 10 years ago.

It will get the largest 4K display in the entire league coming in at 13,000 SQFT. The stadium will also get a new LED field lighting system that will brighten playing surfaces for primetime games. Stadium and club areas will have a refreshed look and feel, and some of those upgrades will be in place this season.

Also part of the upgrade list is faster WiFi with 1,300 new access points as well as improved cellular services with new 5G systems by Verizon. The main concourse will get cashierless food and beverage stands to speed up service. There will be two new open-air patio bars and 120 remodeled luxury suites.

The total cost clocks in around $200 million. 90% of that will be financed by the 49ers and 10% will be from the Santa Clara Stadium Authority.

Levi's Stadium is hosting Super Bowl 60

Our neighbors at Santa Clara will once again be hosting the Super Bowl in 2026. Only two other Super Bowls have been hosted in the Bay Area. Super bowl 19 where the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium and Super Bowl 50, Levi's Stadium first Super Bowl.

2026 is going to be a huge year for Levi's Stadium as they will also be hosting FIFA World Cup matches. The 49ers are planning to borrow $125 million from the NFL for stadium upgrades to prepare for these big events.

The biggest winner of Super Bowl LX (60) is likely going to be San Jose. There will be a huge economic boost including events, hotel bookings, and visitors flying into SJC. These will come without any sort of subsidy, liability, or major risks which will mostly be shouldered by Santa Clara (there is a lot of economic upside for them as well).

Given the current issues San Francisco is facing with crime, homelessness, and the general logistics of it being an hour or two away with traffic--I think San Jose will end up with more of the planned events surrounding the Super Bowl than the last time around.

February 5-6: South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk + SoFA Winter Mrkt

South FIRST FRIDAYS has been expanded in honor of the Super Bowl this year. Not only is it a two-day event now, but there will be local vendors and special performances. Multiple venues and art galleries will be participating, as you can see on the handy map below. Most of the festivities will be on South First Street, but I highly recommend exploring other areas as well. If you haven't made a pit stop to Plaza de Cesar Chavez recently then this would also be a great time to swing by.

South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk + SoFA Winter Mrkt takes place tonight from 7-11pm and tomorrow from noon to 6pm.
