Content Magazine Marks Issue 18.4 “Profiles” with Downtown Pick-Up Party and Tribute

Local creatives and supporters will gather Thursday, August 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the San José Museum of Art for Content Magazine’s traditional Pick-Up Party celebrating the release of Fall 2026 issue 18.4, titled “Profiles.” The free event at 110 South Market Street marks the magazine’s 76th issue and offers a chance to meet featured artists while picking up a fresh copy.

This gathering carries extra weight as the community bids farewell to founder and Cultivator Daniel Garcia, who steps into retirement after years of championing South Bay arts and culture. Hosted by Mighty Mike McGee, the evening will include speakers sharing stories of Garcia’s impact before he takes the stage for closing remarks.

Programming features live music from DJ Toonin, dance performances by Abhinaya Dance Company of San José and Folclórico Colibrí, a pop-up gallery exhibition drawn from the issue’s pages, and food and drinks provided by Mezcal Restaurant. Partners San José Museum of Art and Mezcal Restaurant help anchor the night in the heart of Downtown San Jose.

Pre-orders for the issue remain open through August 9 for free shipping. RSVPs help organizers plan for the crowd that typically fills these celebrations of local talent. The party continues Content Magazine’s long tradition of turning each new issue into a living community event that connects readers directly with the people and work featured inside.

H2 Gallery at Hammer Theatre Celebrates Local Artists with Reflections and Upcoming Texturescape

Those exploring the Hammer Theatre Center in Downtown San Jose will discover the H2 Gallery, a dedicated space that rotates exhibitions of work by local artists and San José State University alumni. The current show, Reflections, wraps up on July 16 after featuring pieces by nine creators who work across painting, printmaking, and drawing. Their subjects range from the fleeting and intimate to larger-scale reflections on environment and personal vision, with select works available for purchase.

The artists in Reflections bring distinct perspectives that together create a rich dialogue within the gallery walls. Dianna Masciarelli, Sue La Fetra, Vera Fainshtein, Megan Huddlestun, Clayton Moraga, Guna Leikind, Imara Osorno, Fe Villanueva, and Alessandra Aquino each contribute pieces that invite close looking and thoughtful response. The exhibition marks the fourth in the space and underscores a commitment to elevating voices connected to the university and the broader San Jose community.

Because the gallery sits inside the Hammer Theatre Center, visitors attending performances often find themselves drawn into the artwork as a natural extension of the evening. This integration turns a simple night out into a fuller encounter with the creative energy that flows through Downtown San Jose. San Jose Day Returns with Creative Events Across the City

San Jose will honor its dynamic community spirit with the 8th Annual San Jose Day celebration running through April 12. The multi-day series will showcase local art, music, fashion, and culture at venues across the city.

On Saturday the centerpiece festival will unfold at Creekside Social at 50 Barack Obama Blvd. from 10 AM to 3 PM. It'll feature live music, a lowrider showcases, over 70 vendors, and live art demonstrations.

Sunday will provide a relaxed close with the Sunday Social at Clandestine Brewing. These events will deliver memorable experiences and deepen appreciation for all that makes San Jose thrive. You can see the full lineup over here.

October's First Fridays Art Walk and Street Market in Downtown San Jose

Today, October 3rd from 5 to 10 PM, Downtown San Jose comes alive with the First Fridays Art Walk and the final Street MRKT indie urban art faire of the year. Centered in the SoFA District along South First Street, this free event invites everyone to explore galleries, museums, and open-air displays. Families and friends can wander through creative spaces that highlight the city's vibrant arts scene.

The Street MRKT transforms the street into a lively gathering spot with booths from local artists like Animate One by Isaac Bassard, The Belly Dance Guild, and Black Lantern Tattoo & Art Collective. Food options abound with trucks such as Cali Cool Hawaiian Shaved Ice, Daily Grind Burger, and Me Oi Food Truck. A beer garden stage features DJs including Chryptic, Jswizza, Lycan Catt, and Moray Rivers for an evening of music and energy.

Participating venues offer diverse exhibitions that showcase global and local talent. Anno Domini presents surreal paintings by Susiyo from Indonesia and mixed-media works by Kazland from the UK. Downtown San Jose art installation will become a temporary skating rink

A temporary art project that was put up in the SoFA District in 2021 will soon become open to the public on a regular basis. The "Serpentine Pavilion" was supposed to be a placeholder for a three-tower project that was cancelled. Now it will become part of Unzipped Gardens Roller Rink and Beer Garden.

Today through Memorial Day, visitors will be able to rent skates and enjoy beer and food-truck bites while admiring the art piece. DJs and live bands will provide atmospheric music. The chain-link fences will also finally come down and be replaced with a more elegant permanent fence.

I have walked through the art project several times during special events and it is really impressive. I hope we find some way to preserve the tower or incorporate it into whatever future development takes place on this block.

The schedule for the roller rink and beer garden will be Fridays from 5-10pm, Saturdays from noon-10pm, and Sundays from noon-7pm. Skate rentals are $25 for adults and $20 for kids under 12, but skating is not required to walk in and hang out.

The most unique part of the event this month is an interactive activity at the California Theatre hosted by Opera San Jose. You can watch a captivating performance from Bluebeard's Castle followed by a scavenger hunt through the theater and lobbies filled with hidden surprises. They will also have temporary tattoos, popcorn, and a tarot card reader. Very cool, and all free to the public. I'll also have to mention the free live jazz music at the SJZ Break Room throughout the event starting at 4:50pm.

San Jose Mayor Mahan's plan to revitalize Downtown

Mayor Matt Mahan wrote a guest post for the Silicon Valley Business Journal highlighting his plans for Downtown San Jose. The overall goal is not just to rebound from the pandemic but to rebrand and reimagine what Downtown should be and that is the Downtown of Silicon Valley--not just San Jose.

His plans include working towards ending homelessness in San Jose, improving safety, improving the pedestrian experience (such as closing San Pedro St. to cars and potentially closing Post St.), encouraging public art, and providing incentives to attract more high-rise development. 

It's well worth reading the article linked below to understand where the ship is being steered. Personally, I've never felt more optimistic about Downtown San Jose.

Taste of India Festival this weekend

As I was walking through Downtown San Jose today, I saw that a major event was being setup in Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Now I know what that event is, the Taste of India Festival! It will feature over 150 varieties of Indian Food, nonstop entertainment, an open air Bollywood Glow Party, and a celebrity appearance.

The event goes from noon to 10pm both today and tomorrow is is completely free. All of the details are below.

Día de San Juan Salsa Fest on June 21

Yet another new music festival is coming to Downtown San Jose this weekend. The inaugural Día de San Juan Salsa Fest is a collaboration between San Jose Jazz (SJZ) and the nonprofit cultural organization MACLA.

The festival will feature three great regional bands: Latin Rhythm Boys, Orquesta Taino, and La Mixta Criolla. In addition to the live music there will be salsa dance lessons, a DJ, and of course food and drinks. It all goes down in Parque de Los Pobladores, across the street from MACLA in Downtown San Jose's artsy SoFA District.

The event is free and runs Friday, June 21st from 5-10pm.

Epic San Pedro Square mural is coming along

Over 1,200 volunteers have come together to paint one of the largest murals in California in Downtown San Jose. The art is inspired by a sarape blanked and represents the diversity of San Jose. Much work has already been done over Memorial Day weekend and it could be complete as soon as tomorrow. To check on the progress, just head over to San Pedro Square... you literally can't miss it.
