Family Day on the Avenue Returns to Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen

Willow Glen merchants will fill Lincoln Avenue with family-friendly fun on July 25. From 11 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon, participating shops and restaurants along the tree-lined stretch will offer special deals, live music, games, and hands-on activities that turn a regular summer Saturday into a neighborhood celebration.

The free event serves as one last relaxed outing before school schedules take over. Families can collect book-themed prizes at Hicklebee’s, enjoy pizza specials at Round Table or Pizza My Heart, sample chocolate bites at Mariette Chocolates, or try sensory play stations and movement games. Many spots will also hand out stickers, discounts, and exclusive giveaways while supplies hold out.

Organized by the Willow Glen Business Association, the afternoon highlights the independent businesses that give the neighborhood its distinct character. Visitors will find everything from pet supply surprises and bookstore treats to aura photo sessions and studio tours, all within a compact area that stays easy to navigate with nearby parking.

This merchant-led gathering keeps the small-town energy that is still alive inside San Jose. It creates space for parents and kids to wander, discover new favorites, and support the local shops that make Downtown Willow Glen feel like its own destination.

San Jose gains when its neighborhoods host simple, welcoming events like this one. Family Day on the Avenue strengthens connections between residents and the businesses that line the Avenue, adding another layer to the everyday vibrancy that sets Willow Glen apart.

Mrs. Roper Romp Brings Playful Energy to Downtown Willow Glen Once Again

Friends and neighbors seeking a lighthearted summer afternoon in Willow Glen will have the perfect reason to dust off the caftans and wigs this coming weekend. The third annual Mrs. Roper Romp turns the neighborhood into a stage for colorful fun inspired by the Three's Company television character known for her bold fashion and larger-than-life personality.

The gathering takes place on Saturday, July 11 from 1 to 5 PM throughout Downtown Willow Glen. Participants need no tickets or advance sign-ups. They simply choose an outfit that captures the spirit, then spend the hours shopping at local boutiques, enjoying meals at neighborhood restaurants, and strolling the sidewalks in full flamboyant style.

Willow Glen has always carried a village atmosphere with its blend of specialty stores, casual dining spots, and pedestrian-friendly blocks. This is a pretty unique event that I have never seen take place in another part of Silicon Valley. I certainly plan to sit outside at one of Willow Glen's many great restaurants and enjoy the show--watching both those participating and the confused looks from people that stumbled upon the event and have no clue what's going on.

Rare 126-Unit Mixed-Use Development Approved for Willow Glen

San Jose has given the go-ahead for a seven-story mixed-use building at 940 Willow Street in Willow Glen, transforming a current liquor store site into 126 apartments. The project includes a mix of studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, and three-bedrooms, with 15 percent dedicated to very low-income households and another 15 percent to moderate-income ones. This approval leverages state laws to address housing needs, allowing development on a commercially zoned parcel that otherwise might not support residential units.

Developers from Redco have incorporated neighborhood-sensitive designs, such as adjusted building heights and architectural features that blend with Willow Glen's charm. Extra parking considerations aim to minimize disruptions, showing a commitment to fitting the project into the community's fabric. Supporters highlight the urgent need for more homes across the city, noting that areas like Willow Glen can contribute fairly to solving broader housing shortages.

While some residents expressed worries about traffic, sewer strain, and neighborhood character during hearings, city officials emphasized that state regulations guide the process to ensure safety and feasibility. The development passed review without findings of adverse health or safety impacts, paving the way for construction.

This addition stands to enrich Willow Glen by bringing new residents who will support nearby shops and services along "The Avenue." The design looks pretty good for a midrise project and overall from a development perspective it will be a tremendous improvement over the discount liquor store that sits there right now.

Aldea Home & Baby Lands in Willow Glen

Willow Glen is welcoming the first expansion of Aldea Home & Baby. This San Francisco-based retailer, specializing in baby gear and home furnishings, has settled into a spacious 4,800-square-foot spot at 1123 Lincoln Avenue. The store stocks everything from car seats and strollers to toys, apparel, and stylish home items, making it a go-to destination for families and design enthusiasts alike. With its roots in the Mission District since 2005, Aldea brings a curated selection that fits seamlessly into Lincoln Avenue's lineup of beloved local shops like Three Sisters and Mariette's Chocolates.

What sets this store apart is its focus on hands-on experiences for customers. Shoppers can take advantage of free demonstrations for strollers and car seats, along with personalized consultations that last anywhere from half an hour to two hours. These sessions help parents navigate choices for nurseries, registries, and everyday needs by letting them interact directly with products. In a city Forbes recognized in 2024 as the top spot for small businesses, Aldea's approach fosters that entrepreneurial spirit, drawing in community support from neighboring merchants even before the doors opened.

Looking ahead, Aldea's ambitions reflect the entrepreneurial energy pulsing through San Jose. CEO Johanna Bialkin envisions expanding to 50 locations over the next five to 10 years, starting along the West Coast and reaching into major East Coast cities. This growth mirrors the booming baby products market, projected to hit $475 billion globally by 2030. As a corporate-owned site with franchising potential, the Willow Glen location positions San Jose as a key player in this expanding industry, inviting more families to come and discover one of our city's most welcoming neighborhoods.

New rooftop beer garden and restaurant in Willow Glen

Copita, backed by celebrity-chef Joanne Weir, made a big splash in Willow Glen last year.  Not only were the food and cocktails on point, but it brought a really nice 2nd floor outdoor terrace to one side of Downtown Willow Glen. Another new restaurant called Luke's Rooftop Beer Garden and Restaurant will bring the same vibe to the other side of Willow Glen.

Luke's is owned by the same proprietor as Water Tower Kitchen in Campbell and the former Blush Raw Bar at the San Pedro Square Market. The vision for Luke's is that it will be kid-friendly on the ground floor and be an ideal date-night spot for adults on the upper terrace.

The menu will be California cuisine with local ingredients. The rooftop beer garden will have 18-20 rotating beers on tap.

With San Jose's awesome weather, it's surprising that more restaurants have not opted to build rooftop terraces. The only other one I can think of that is coming is Eox & Nyx in Downtown San Jose. Willow Glen is especially well suited for this since you have a single beautiful street where all the restaurants and businesses are concentrated.

Luke's should be coming in a year or so. The address is 1093 Minnesota Ave (next to the Starbucks) and it will be a significant improvement to the area as you can see from the images below.

Jim Stump Expands The Table Restaurant and launches Stumpy's

After being open for only a year, Jim Stump--proprietor of AP Stumps and Los Gatos Brewing Co.--is already expanding The Table in Willow Glen. The restaurant has been booming lately and they are taking over 900 SQFT currently occupied by a neighboring dry-cleaner, where they will move their bar to. This also creates the opportunity for a massive outdoor patio (drawing below). Construction is slated for early 2014 with a 4-5 month build-out, just in time for summer.

Jim is also doubling down on Willow Glen with a second eatery called Stumpy's in the Garden Theater building. They will serve modern hamburgers and hot dogs in a small 700 SQFT space, but they are planning to convert two parking spots into an outdoor curb-cafe to make more available dining space.

The Table will expand into the current Elite Cleaners space, which is on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Willow Street in San Jose's Willow Glen. The expansion will allow coveted outdoor dining space on the corner, which is currently a drive-up loading zone for the cleaner's.

Willow Glen Town Square Grand Opening!

This Saturday is the official grand opening celebration of the Willow Glen Town Square. I really like what they did with this project. It's a three story building with medical and professional offices on the top two floors, retail on the ground floor, a community common area with a fountain (the "square") and two story parking in the back. Lou's Village, Crepevine, and Willow Glen Creamery are some of the eateries on the ground floor.

Some highlights of this event include:

  • Live music and entertainment
  • Face painters and balloon artists
  • Samples from local restaurants
  • Raffles
  • Platter painting contest
  • Interactive characters
  • Giveaways
  • 2nd Harvest Food Drive

The Petroglyph Cermaic Lounge platter painting contest will encourage local residents of all ages to paint their interpretation of Willow Glen Town Square. The entry fee is $10 and the winners will receive a $300 Apple Gift Card.

Sounds like a stellar event and a great opportunity to check out the new iconic project in Willow Glen.

Assyrian Food Festival Aug 18-19

There are a myriad of ethnic festivals in San Jose, but this is one I have never heard of before. This weekend in Willow Glen the Assyrian Food Festival kicks off. There is no entrance fee and there's even a free shuttle from Tamien Station. The food is in the Mediterranean genre with staples such as hummus, dolmas, and kebabs along with some unique cultural dishes. Sounds really interesting!

The festival will be centered around the Assyrian Church of the East on 680 Minnesota Avenue. For more festival info have a look at their website.
