Lōkahi Polynesian Dance Group opens its 27th annual Hō’ike this weekend at the Hammer Theatre Center in Downtown San Jose. The two-night event runs August 15 and 16 and centers on the island of Maui, inviting audiences to experience the place many call “Maui nō ka ʻoi” through hula and Ori Tahiti.
Dancers ranging from age two to more than sixty fill the stage, creating a true celebration of ʻohana. Mothers perform alongside daughters, fathers share the floor with their children, and longtime members who have danced with the group for over 25 years stand next to first-time performers. The company has spent the past year preparing the program that highlights Maui’s landscapes, traditions and music.
The Hammer Theatre, located at 101 Paseo de San Antonio, provides an intimate setting for the multi-generational production. Orchestra and parterre seats remain available while the balcony has already sold out, reflecting strong local interest in the long-running cultural showcase.
This Hō’ike continues Lōkahi’s tradition of presenting Polynesian dance as both performance and family gathering right in the heart of Downtown San Jose. Those who attend will find a stage full of shared history, carefully learned choreography and the spirit of aloha that has defined the group since 1999.
