Kaiser begins construction of their new San Jose hospital

A state-of-the-art hospital is coming to the Santa Teresa Kaiser campus in South San Jose. It will replace the aging 50-year-old hospital with 650,000 SQFT of medical facilities and 300 private patient rooms.

This is more than double the size of the hospital it will be replacing. Rooms will no longer need to be shared, a very welcome change for most patients. Kaiser is also going to leverage new technologies such as the latest MRI and CT scanning equipment.

The new hospital is expected to be completed in the fall of 2029.

New Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center

A greatly improved Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is being proposed for 250 Hospital Parkway. The project would involve the demo of the existing 250,000 SQFT hospital and building a significantly larger 685,000 SQFT facility along with a 35,000 SQFT energy and service yard.

The new hospital would have 303 beds, up 56 from the current hospital, as well as multiple medical office buildings. The old hospital would only be demolished after the new one is complete.

Improved medical facilities would obviously be a big win for San Jose residents. Hopefully this can be completed as soon as possible.

Good Samaritan planning a major hospital expansion

Today Good Samaritan Hospital in West San Jose has 273 beds but wants to undergo a major modernization project. The renovated hospital would expand by over 50% to 419 beds across 1.37 million SQFT (triple the size of the existing campus). It would also add 1,391 new parking stalls, a 200,000 SQFT medical office building, and seismic safety upgrades.

One part of the project that is bad news is their intention to drop acute care (urgent care) by 2030. Besides that it looks like a major win. Today all of the rooms at Good Sam are shared while private patient rooms are the norm for top hospital around the Bay. The expansion will likely address that gap and several other modernization opportunities.

The first phase of construction should be complete in 2029. It's great to see the hospital I was born in evolve into something better for San Jose residents.

El Camino Hospital nabs land in South San Jose

El Camino Hospital just paid $23.4 million for a 16-acre lot on Santa Teresa Boulevard. The speculation for a lot that size is that El Camino might be interested in building their third hospital on this site (they already have full-service hospitals in Mountain View and Los Gatos). The amount of land is far more than what is needed for just medical offices, and South San Jose has enough population to support another hospital in the area--especially with more housing going up at the old IBM campus.

El Camino has been hesitant to announce any concrete plans and has indicated that we shouldn't expect anything to happen soon. I'm hoping they don't sit on the land for too long. If built the project would not bring in any new tax dollars since it would be exempt, but a hospital in the area would improve services for local residents, bring more jobs, and likely increase housing values in the area.

Kaiser is Building North San Jose Medical Offices

Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente is gearing up to develop 9.7 acres in North San Jose at the intersection of Skyport Drive and Technology Drive. The healthcare provider wants to build a 153,000 SQFT medical facility with 103 medical offices. Kaiser purchased the empty plot of land almost three years ago and has just now submitted a formal development application.

While many living in San Jose choose Kaiser as their provider, there are currently zero Kaiser facilities in the North San Jose area. Fortunately, that will soon change.

Good Samaritan Hospital Spending $33 Million to Expand Their Emergency Rooms

Good Samaritan Hospital in South San Jose is expanding its emergency operations from 7,857 SQFT to 22,653 SQFT. This $33 Million project will be done in the existing space. Good Sam will be relocating other departments and knocking down walls in order to make room for the larger ER, allowing the hospital to increase the number of patients they see from 54,000 to 75,000.

As part of the expansion they will have a new kid-friendly waiting area, a new ambulance drop-off area and a CT scanner dedicated to the ER. Construction will start next year and should wrap up by 2017.

Kaiser is Expanding in North San Jose

Earlier this year Kaiser purchased 9.7 acres at 1717 Technology Drive and is looking to demolish a warehouse sitting on the property and build a medical office building. The new development could be as large as 80,000 SQFT and is in close proximity to several new housing and office developments. There is also a possibility of upgrading the project to a full-blown hospital in the future if there is demand for it.
