Bay Area Michelin Star Restaurants - 2026 Edition

The latest Michelin Star Bay Area honorees were just announced about a few weeks ago. The Michelin guide is the most renowned rubric in the for measuring culinary success. Unfortunately, this year was uneventful. All of the new restaurants were in SF or Wine Country.

Michelin has three different star categories:

• One Star - A very good restaurant in its category with cuisine prepared to a consistently high standard. A good place to stop on your journey.
• Two Stars - Excellent cuisine, skillfully and carefully crafted dishes of outstanding quality. Worth a detour.
• Three Stars - Exceptional cuisine with distinctive dishes and superlative ingredients. Worth a special journey.

"Green Stars" are for restaurants that are at the forefront of sustainable, environmental, and ethical standards.

There are also restaurants in the Michelin guide that do not get a star, but are considered "Michelin Recommended." This is already a significant honor that a very small percentage of restaurants achieve. This distinction has gotten more rare since the guide now covers all of California instead of just the Bay Area. San Jose has a total of 3 Michelin Recommended restaurants, and it's almost the same list as the past few years except Adega is inexplicably not on the list even though their more casual sister restaurant Petiscos is.

I created a Google doc listing all of the star recipients for 2026, along with tabs for all previous years and some general statistics. There is no longer a physical book for California, but Michelin will update their site after new stars are awarded.

This year there were a total of 44 Bay Area restaurants that were awarded Michelin stars. 61% of the restaurants are locating in SF, 11% in Silicon Valley (5% in the South Bay, 7% in the Peninsula), 20% in Wine Country, 5% in the East Bay, and 2% in Marin. There are three new restaurants on the list for 2024 and one that closed down. 

I'm again feeling optimistic about next year with Strata and hopefully Adega, Eox & Nyx, Le Papillion, and many others will get the recognition they deserve. How did not one San Jose Vietnamese restaurant make the cut for a recommendation? There used to be several in the guide.  

Mariachi Herencia de Mexico Leads Fifth Fiesta del Mariachi in San Jose

The fifth annual Fiesta del Mariachi arrives at the Mexican Heritage Plaza on July 25 with a lineup that blends established tradition and fresh voices. Chicago’s Mariachi Herencia de Mexico headlines the evening as a 2x Latin GRAMMY-nominated group of young musicians who built their path from public school classrooms to stages across North America. Their six chart-topping albums and high-energy sets promise fan favorites such as Inolvidable, Preciosa, La Murga, Perdón, Espléndida and Caminaré.

Local ensembles add depth and regional flavor to the program. Mariachi Azteca has serenaded the Bay Area since 1981 under the direction of Juan Francisco “El Pato” Diaz and shared bills with icons including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán and Juan Gabriel. Mariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano, the first all-female mariachi in Northern California since its founding in 2007, brings members with diverse backgrounds and advanced degrees who emphasize both performance and education. The university ensemble Mariachi San José from San Jose State University contributes skilled student musicians selected through rigorous auditions on traditional instruments and vocals.

Los Lupeños de San José, founded in 1969 as one of California’s earliest Mexican folk dance companies, closes the artistic circle with vibrant folklorico choreography that travels through Mexico’s regions. Their flaring dresses and passionate movements have represented the culture with pride and innovation for decades.

The full evening extends well beyond the stage. Guests can enjoy micheladas, bites from local food trucks and shopping with artisanal vendors who showcase San Jose businesses. The Mexican Heritage Plaza provides the setting as a 6-acre cultural hub in East San Jose that hosts more than 100,000 people each year through arts programming designed to preserve community heritage and build resiliency.

Vallarta Supermarkets to Open Larger Store at The Plant Shopping Center in San Jose

San Jose will soon welcome a new grocery destination as Vallarta Supermarkets prepares to open in the former Toys "R" Us space at The Plant shopping center. The nearly 60,000 square foot location will exceed the chain's usual store size and will bring approximately 150 new jobs to the area with its mid to late November opening. The center already draws crowds for Target, Home Depot, and Ulta Beauty, and this addition will turn the hub into an even stronger one-stop destination for household needs.

The family-owned chain began as a Mexican meat market back in 1985 and has directed its growth northward from a Southern California foundation in recent years. Officials signed the lease for the San Jose site about a year ago after evaluating options. They have pointed to the central position, straightforward access, and ample parking as factors that made the location stand out, particularly with other major retailers already on site to form a full shopping stop.

Company leadership has built the brand around quality, cleanliness, and service that reflect what they would choose for their own families and communities. The additional space in this store will support a wider array of fresh items while preserving those core standards throughout. Leaders have also shared hopes of opening further stores in San Jose, noting the city offers the scale and vitality to sustain more than one Vallarta location.

3rd Annual San Jose Cinco de Mayo Cultural Parade and Festival Will Bring Color and Community to the Alum Rock Neighborhood

The third annual Cinco de Mayo Cultural Parade and Festival will transform streets and parkland in the Alum Rock neighborhood into a vibrant celebration of Mexican heritage and local pride this Sunday, May 3rd. The day begins with a parade at 10 a.m. and continues with a full afternoon of festivities that highlight the city’s rich cultural tapestry.

The parade will start at the corner of Alum Rock and King, then travel along King Road toward the 680 freeway underpass. Marchers, dancers, and classic lowriders will fill the route, creating a moving spectacle that draws neighbors and visitors alike into the heart of East San Jose. By noon the energy shifts to Emma Prusch Park at King and Story, where the festival runs until 5 p.m.

Live performances, traditional folklorico dances, and a showcase of customized lowriders will anchor the afternoon program. Organizers have promised a full lineup of cultural acts that honor history while inviting everyone to join the fun.

San Jose Streets Come Alive During Viva CalleSJ Adventures

San Jose residents and visitors alike discover new sides of San Jose when Viva CalleSJ takes over. This free program will close select streets to vehicles and open them wide for walking, biking, skating, and rolling through the heart of the Eastside.

Routes wind from Mexican Heritage Plaza out to Alum Rock Village and link Cimarron Park with Fernish Park, where explorers encounter side quests filled with local spots, neighborly chats, and festive energy that turns pavement into shared public space.

Over the past decade Viva CalleSJ has grown into a cherished tradition, drawing thousands together to celebrate movement and connection while strengthening community bonds across San Jose. With the next event arriving soon on April 19, now stands as the ideal moment to join in. San Jose Sparks Everyday Creativity with WeCreate408 This April

The City of San José Office of Cultural Affairs launched WeCreate408, a month-long creative challenge that invites everyone to participate through simple weekly prompts.

Participants will photograph a favorite neighborhood spot, sketch a meal that brings back memories, or capture small details from daily routines. All contributions will appear together on a digital public art wall where hundreds of responses from across the city will showcase unique perspectives on life in San Jose.

This year organizers collaborated with more local artists than ever before. The campaign artwork came from several San Jose creators working together, and short video features highlight local talent including Los Panaderos, the energetic Mexican folk band known for mixing music with badminton.

Community art days at spots like Voyager Coffee and the Children’s Discovery Museum will offer fun in-person ways to participate. Classroom projects guided by local artist Julie Cardenas have also brought the challenge into schools.

"Santos" Will Bring a Modern Mexican Steakhouse to San Pedro Square

San Pedro Square in Downtown San Jose will gain a sophisticated new dining destination this August. Santos opens at 17 North San Pedro Street as a modern Mexican steakhouse that blends regional flavors with premium steakhouse preparation.

MDM Hospitality Group commits between five hundred thousand and one million dollars to the buildout. The project generates twenty to thirty jobs across kitchen and service roles while establishing a lasting presence in the neighborhood.

The interior design creates a dark and elegant atmosphere suited for memorable evenings. This addition builds on the growing restaurant focus in San Pedro Square.

A Japanese Mexican fusion pop-up called Bar Tako will operate in the future home of Santos until July 3rd.

Bar Tako Opens with Mexican-Japanese Flavors in Downtown San Jose

Bar Tako is about to become one of San Jose's most unique food offerings. It's a pop-up restaurant blending Mexican and Japanese cuisines at 17 North San Pedro Street in San Pedro Square. Set to open in late February 2026 and run through June, this temporary spot activates a key Downtown location previously home to Olla Cocina. Industry experts Derek Belanger and Greg Nasser lead the project, drawing on Nikkei influences from Peru to craft dishes that merge bold tastes in unexpected ways.

The menu divides into sections for shared plates, encouraging group dining experiences. Raw bar selections feature sushi-grade hamachi paired with salsa verde and salmon tartare alongside mango-shiso pico de gallo served with chips. Robata grill options include grilled pork and chicken skewers with housemade masa tortillas, corn ribs topped with Kewpie mayo and furikake, and Okinawa sweet potato with mole aioli and cotija cheese. Standout entrees range from togarashi shrimp tacos to shoyu-braised beef short rib tamales with ancho chile sauce and pickled ginger, plus A5 wagyu accompanied by mole.

Desserts offer creative twists like three varieties of sweet tamales with sauces, such as a red bean version drizzled in miso-caramel. The bar complements the food with tequila, mezcal, Japanese whisky, beers from both cultures, and Baja California wines including Nebiolos and chilled reds. Open daily from noon to 10 p.m., Bar Tako invites San Jose foodies to explore one of the most unique food offerings in the South Bay.

$3 Million Investment Elevates East San Jose's Mexican Heritage Plaza

The School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza has secured a $3 million investment to expand La Avenida in East San Jose. Backed by Councilmember Peter Ortiz and the City of San Jose Housing Department, this funding launches the first phase by redeveloping a 28,000-square-foot commercial property directly across from the current facility. The site holds historical importance as the area where César Chávez started his early activism, making the project a meaningful step in preserving local heritage.

This expansion allows the plaza to broaden its cultural offerings, introduce family wellness services through partner Gardner Health Services, and create new economic pathways for the Mayfair neighborhood. 15 Years of Holiday Traditions at Fiesta Navideña

The Mexican Heritage Plaza in East San Jose comes alive each December with lights, music, and community spirit for Fiesta Navideña. Alebrijes Drone Show Tonight at Ritmos Y Colores

San Jose hosts Ritmos Y Colores on September 6, 2025, from 5pm to 10pm at Plaza de César Chávez in Downtown, offering a free celebration of Mexican folk art, music, and community for all ages. Presented by San Jose Jazz in collaboration with Culture Night Market, the festival features illuminated alebrijes, fantastical creatures from Mexican tradition, alongside live performances and interactive experiences. Giant Alebrijes Bring Mexican Magic to Downtown San Jose

Eight towering alebrijes now grace the streets around Plaza de Cesar Chavez, inviting residents and visitors to discover the whimsical side of Downtown San Jose. These fiberglass and steel sculptures, originating from Oaxaca, Mexico, stand as vibrant protectors and spiritual guides, each one a unique blend of animal forms and bold colors. Unveiled by San Jose Jazz on August 6 as part of the Summer Fest celebrations, the installations mark the third stop on their U.S. tour and will remain in place until September 28, offering plenty of time for exploration.

The project, a $400,000 collaboration supported by the city, San Jose Downtown Association, PG&E, and Sobrato Philanthropies, highlights San Jose's commitment to becoming a premier cultural destination. San Jose Jazz executive director Brendan Rawson noted the sculptures' role in establishing the downtown area as an artistic center, driving future growth through creativity. San Jose’s Food Trucks Take the National Stage: Jojo’s Hot Chicken and Joe’s Taco Shop Shine

San Jose’s culinary scene just earned a major spotlight. Yelp’s 2025 Top 100 food trucks list features two local stars: Jojo’s Hot Chicken at No. 4 and Joe’s Taco Shop at No. 94. 

Jojo’s Hot Chicken, parked at 1587 Kooser Road between Cambrian Park and Almaden Valley, delivers a flavor fusion that’s hard to resist. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., it blends the fiery heat of Nashville-style hot chicken with the aromatic depth of Ethiopian and Eritrean spices.
