History San Jose is evaluating several potential downtown sites for a new venue, with the recently acquired Knox-Goodrich Building at 34 and 36 South First Street emerging as a leading candidate. The city purchased the 1889 structure and the adjacent property at 30 South First Street for $3.6 million on August 7 from an Urban Catalyst affiliate.
A downtown location would allow History San Jose to host events and rotate artifacts currently held in storage while keeping its primary campus at History Park. City officials are exploring community-serving, cultural, and economic uses for the building as part of broader activation plans for the site.
The Knox-Goodrich Building requires interior upgrades including a bathroom, flooring, and lighting before it can open to the public. Estimates for that work range from $250,000 to $350,000. Because of its historic status, the exterior must remain intact.
The neighboring former Lido’s Nightclub property is slated for demolition to make way for housing. Bringing a cultural institution into the heart of the downtown historic district would place more of San Jose’s stories within walking distance of daily life and visitors.
