Symphony Silicon Valley Performing Fantasia for Valentine's Day

Live Symphony Orchestra with Huge Movie Screen

San Jose, CA – There is a chill in the air, but the hottest ticket in town is the Valentine love story between Symphony Silicon Valley and Disney’s Fantasia.  The weekend of love, February 14 and 15 at San Jose’s Center for Performing Arts, Symphony Silicon Valley will be performing live on stage the classic music from the original 1940 Walt Disney film and Disney’s Fantasia 2000 update while the movie is projected in high definition on a huge screen.

“This performance is also a love story between the magic of film and the love of music,” said Andrew Bales, President of Symphony Silicon Valley.  “This is the perfect Valentine for everyone: friends, lovers, families, music lovers old and young.”

Disney shares one of its crown jewels of feature animation with Symphony Silicon Valley, accompanying scenes from both the 1940 original version by Walt Disney, as well as Disney Fantasia 2000, highlighting selections from each, including Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite.

Other iconic moments include Mickey Mouse as he dabbles in magic in Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the mythical unicorns and winged horses that accompany Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. The greatest hits in Fantasia include Debussy’s Claire de Lune, Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird, and who doesn’t recognize Pomp and Circumstance by Sir Edward Elgar with Donald Duck as an assistant in The Noah’s Ark story. But the most memorable of all are the dancing hippos and elephants in Amilcare Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda.

The screening and concert of Fantasia will be on Saturday, February 14 at 8 PM and Sunday, February 15 at 2:30 PM at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, located at 255 S. Almaden Blvd, San Jose, CA 95113. Advance tickets are from $44 to $80 and available by calling the box office Monday – Friday 10 AM to 5 PM at 408 286 2600 or visit  www.fantasiassv.org

About Symphony Silicon Valley

Symphony Silicon Valley is the professional symphony orchestra of San Jose.  Founded in 2002, the nonprofit company has progressed from a daring idea to rapidly become the greater South Bay's premiere orchestra and a notable community success story.  The Symphony's artists, nationally recruited, locally resident, with an average performance tenure in San Jose of over 20 years, are recognized as among the best in the greater Bay Area.  Led by an exciting roster of distinguished guest conductors on the European model, the Symphony is an anchor tenant of San Jose's magnificently restored downtown California Theatre, one of Northern California's most outstanding music halls.  Symphony Silicon Valley is setting an example of an innovative business model in the arts -- market driven and financially conservative, with low overhead and the flexibility to match its programming to its support base.  Besides the Symphony's core Classics concerts, other programs include Target Summer Pops free music festival, five diverse concerts produced outdoors on the lawn and annually bringing nearly 20,000 people out to enjoy totally free and family-friendly music; and ArtSPARK, the county-wide arts education program for all elementary students in grades 3-5. This school year the program will serve 19,000 students.

A Weekend With Pablo Picasso by Herbert Siguenza ~~~ November 12 - December 7, 2014

San Jose, CA – November 3, 2014 –San Jose Stage Company presents, in association with San Diego Repertory, A Weekend with Pablo Picasso, by actor/writer Herbert Siguenza of the powerful and politically-renowned theatrical troupe Culture Clash.

Siguenza created the original play at San Diego Repertory (2011) and stars as Pablo Picasso, the most influential artist in modern history. Set in the 1957 artist’s studio in southern France, the artist paints and speaks directly to the audience. Siguenza takes on the persona of Picasso, even in his art. Based upon the writings of Picasso, Siguenza creates six masterpieces live on stage each night of the performance.

“Six paintings in three days? Who do you think I am---Dali?” Picasso was the first rock-star artist—a ferocious pacifist, obsessive art maker, flamboyantly opinionated philosopher, and self-proclaimed clown. He relished his passionate views about love, death, war, beauty, eternity, and creativity. The Culture Clash artist, Siguenza’s one-man show, will amaze and promises a weekend you will never forget.

San Jose, CA (September 2014) - San Jose Stage Company’s 32nd season launches with a true piece of Americana in N. Richard Nash’s Romantic ComedyThe Rainmaker. A beautiful, timeless tale of what it means to take a leap of faith in desperately hopeless times.
As described by Nash, “The play takes place in a Western state on a summer day...in a time of drought. I tried to tell a simple story about droughts that happen to people and about faith.”
In The Rainmaker Lizzie’s hopes and dreams have run dry when the charismatic Starbuck arrives out of nowhere, selling promises of rain - Lizzie must decide: is he a con man, or does he hold the key to everything she desires?
"The notion of dreams coming true might seem a preposterous conceit in a more cynical era, yet The Rainmaker, N. Richard Nash's unabashedly optimistic 1953 teleplay-turned-Broadway-hit, still has the power to keep disbelief at bay...
After nearly half a century, ‘The Rainmaker’ still makes a handsomely staged case for miracles." - LA Times

San Jose Stage Company Presents "An Iliad"

San Jose Stage Company Presents An Iliad
April 9 – May 4, 2014

San Jose, CA – April 07, 2014 — San Jose Stage Company presents the captivating epic tale, An Iliad, adapted by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, opening April 9 and running through May 4.

Based on Homer’s The Iliad and translated by Robert Fagles, An Iliad is a breathtaking and relevant, modern retelling of a timeless classic which unleashes the thrilling tales of the Trojan War and delves into the psychology of passion and rage, ancient and modern. In this tour-de-force, one actor plays the Greek classic's famous characters Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ Helen of Troy. From Mt. Olympus Gods such as Apollo, Athena and Hermes come and go.

"Every time I sing this song, I hope it's the last time." So says ‘The Poet’ as he digs deep to sing Homer's epic story of war, honor, violence and the Greek siege of the city of Troy.

He's told this story for centuries. It’s a good story,” says the lone figure, emerging from the darkness, as he launches into this modern, enthralling adaptation of Homer’s epic poem that relives the glory and brutality of the Trojan War. Now in the shadow of war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, he unleashes the power of Homer’s classic poem for a modern audience.

Bay Area favorite, Jackson Davis, plays ‘The Poet’ in this lean, muscular, tour-de-force performance he combines the majestic language of Homer with the informal way we speak today.

As The Poet recites, comments and chats, he compels his audience to connect with his story, to feel what he feels, to believe in the importance of this story. Maybe if he tells the story one more time the violence will end.

An Iliad premiered in 2010 and has been lauded by critics across the country, including The New York Times: "Mr. O'Hare and Ms. Peterson have telescoped the mighty expanses of Homer's great poem into an evening that scales the conflict of the Trojan War down to an intimate solo show illuminating both the heroism and the horror of warfare."

Kenneth Kelleher directs the 100-minute performance. Mr. Kelleher has directed over twenty performances for The Stage, including The Threepenny Opera, the World Premiere of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, Red, Reckless, Buried Child, On The Waterfrontand Rock ‘n’ Roll. He is currently the Artistic Director of Pacific Repertory Theatre and Resident Director of The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. He has also directed for San Jose Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks, California Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Sacramento Theatre Company and B Street Theatre.

Doctor Faustus is Playing at The Rep

The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus

A World Premiere Adaptation of Marlowe's Classic

Experience the fantastical world of "Medieval punk" (think Steampunk, but Medieval instead of Victorian) in this re-imagined adaptation of The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus.

This world premiere adaptation of Marlowe's Faust conjures a darkly bawdy, delightfully mischievous world using stylized, state-of-the art stagecraft, and leading-edge light and sound gadgetry to spirit the viewer right out of this world – projections, shadow puppets, life-size cage puppets, and actors playing multiple roles, sometimes simultaneously. All of the normally hidden aspects of a play will take place on stage – you'll see the stagehands and wardrobe folks, costumes changed, and props provided, making this not just the telling of a great story, but of how the story is told. If you love theatre that tells bvc a great story while pushing boundaries and demonstrating how theatrical theatre can be, this is one you will want to see.

Bold, ambitious, and stirring... Brandt has become a disciplined and inventive theatrical storyteller. -- San Diego Union-Tribune

Persuasion Playing at The Stage

Persuasion

San Jose Stage Company Presents

Jane Austen’s World Premiere

Persuasion

Adapted by Jennifer Le Blanc from the Novel

San Jose, CA --- March 18, 2013  San Jose Stage Company is producing the World Premiere of Persuasion, Jane Austen’s final novel, adapted by local Bay Area playwright, Jennifer Le Blanc.

The Threepenny Opera, originally slated for this time frame, has been rescheduled to be part of The Stage’s 2013-14 Season.

“The Stage Company is excited to embrace the opportunity to produce the world premiere of Jane Austen's final novel Persuasion,” said Randall King, Artistic Director of the San Jose Stage Company. “The intimate setting of The Stage venue is the perfect environment to revel in Miss Austen's characters, who must negotiate a complex code of conduct in order to survive, much less achieve their ends. The story is indicative of Austen's great talent, razor sharp, laced with irony and wit, and remarkably phrased.”

Persuasion was Jane Austen’s last finished novel, of only six total, and she is considered the greatest of English women novelists. There are numerous contemporary movies based upon her novels, and she has become a book club staple.

“Miss Austen directed her pen to give voice to a woman finding strength to be persuaded by her own heart. Her final novel is said to be a 'Present to herself,’” added King. “The Stage was founded upon the mission of new works and local talent, and now The Stage offers the gift of Persuasion to the Bay area.”

Persuasion was first published posthumously by her family, along with Northanger Abbey, in December 1817. While the characters reflect Austen’s own maturity, the book is filled with satire and is perceptive of people and their relationships, especially love.

Persuasion is one of Austen’s lesser-known novels, and the characters are old, more mature and have known heartache,” says Jennifer Le Blanc, the author of this world premiere and Bay Area native. She adds that she was drawn to this works because the main character Anne has “developed her own voice.” Ms. Le Blanc continues, “I admire Anne greatly; she is selfless, intelligent, practical and a strong woman to have around in a crisis.”

Persuasion was presented as a staged reading at Portland’s Cerimon House in March of 2012, with Ms. Le Blanc performing the lead role of Anne. This is the twelfth world premiere presented by San Jose Stage Company.

Persuasion begins preview on April 3 and opens April 6. Performances are on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Persuasion runs through April 28.

Tickets range from $20 – $45 and are available at www.thestage.org or by calling the box office at 408.283.7142. Visa and MasterCard are accepted, and discounts are available for groups, students and seniors. The theatre is handicapped accessible.
