The Koonzy Paddle Premiers Tonight @ SJSU

06/01 Friday - 06/10 Sunday
Thurs, Fri: 8pm
Sat: 7pm
Sun: 3pm

The Koonzy Paddle

The Koonzy Paddle is a bare-knuckled story about two salty, conflicted brothers, Lyle and Darryl Driggers. Darryl -- long after his divorce and in the grip of resurgent alcoholism -- marries a young woman he has met through an internet mail order bride service. When his new wife betrays him, trouble ensues, and Darryl escapes to the home of his brother and sister-in-law. With the arrival of his vindictive daughter, their lives become a turmoil of comic conflict that awakens memories of sibling grudges and a poignant past, causing the brothers to engage in their ludicrous childhood ritual of "gettin' even."
This humorous play is being co-produced by Spotlite Stage Company and Chamber Productions in association with the SJSU Alumni Association's Alumni Outreach Campaign.
The entire cast and crew are comprised of current students and alumni from SJSU's Theatre Department and is a "Tribute" to the late Theatre Department Chairman, Dr. Hal J Todd.
It was co-directed by Erica Schwehr and it features Steve Trinwith, Wendy Howard-Benham, Stephanie Marsh Ballard and Wes Finlay.

Saturday Stats: San Jose Stat is the Most Common University for Apple Employees

The Huffington Post recently posted an article on which colleges most Google and Apple employees have attended. San Jose State University ranked #2 overall and #1 for Apple employees. Not too shabby. I guess this helps explain why San Jose Stated ranked so high in the "Colleges that will make you rich" list. For the full article, click here.

Thanks to Dan for the tip.

San Jose State Awarded $73.3M for NASA Study

This is an older story, but I have been meaning to post it for a while. San Jose State received a hefty $73.3M in order to partner with NASA on research projects that will improve both the safety and efficiency of air/space travel. The programs related to the research will be run by SJSU professors, graduate students, and of course NASA scientists. For all the info, just click the source link below or check out the press release over here.

CSUs Analyze the Monetary Return on Education

A few weeks back the Merc had an intriguing article on what 20 California State Universities (including SJSU) are doing to measure the value of college education in cold hard cash. By publicizing the average salaries of their graduates they are hoping to show that even with tuition hikes, the return on a college degree is easily worth the investment.

How did San Jose State do? Pretty damn well. Out of the 20 CSUs participating in the study, SJSU has the second highest average starting salary and the third highest mid-career salary. You can take a look at the list below for yourself. Even better, click here to read the entire article.

SJSU Construction Map

Along the same lines as yesterday's post, I found a handy construction map for the entire SJSU campus right over here. It looks like there is another project slated to start mid next year for a new student health and counseling facility. The only image I could find related to this is below:

SJSU is Getting a New Student Union!

Wow, very nice looking building below. Thanks Vadin from the San Jose Development Forum for the info.

Design

The architectural firm Perkins+Will has been tapped to design the New Student Union, including the expansion and renovation portions of the construction. The new building will feature a more modern glass and steel design sensibility but still blend with the more classical aesthetics of the current Student Union. Established in 1935 in Chicago, Perkins+Will has completed projects in 49 of the United States and 43 countries around the world. The firm has received numerous awards, including the American Institute of Architects Firm of the Year in 1999. Below are sample renderings of what the future Student Union will look like.

SJSU Selected to Participate in Chevy Campus Promotions Program

Students Get Hands-On Experience in Real World Marketing

SAN JOSE, CA -- San Jose State University is one of 23 universities throughout the country participating in the Chevrolet Campus Promotions Program. Students in Dwight Bentel & Hall Communications (MCOM 199) have created an in-class working communications agency, responsible for researching, implementing, and evaluating an integrated marketing campaign aimed at increasing awareness for Camaro, Equinox, Malibu and the all-new 2011 Cruze within the Generation Y target market (individuals between the ages of 18 and 24) target market. All 23 campuses will be competing for performance awards at key milestones during the term.
This fall, Dwight Bentel & Hall students at SJSU have a rare opportunity to put their education to work in the real world with a global company. Students will create a fully functioning agency responsible for researching, implementing and evaluating an integrated marketing campaign (IMC) for their client, Chevrolet. Students will use questionnaires and conduct research on campus to find out more about the target market. After they have analyzed their research findings, they will create and implement their strategy they design to best reach the target market while achieving the client’s goals. The agency receives a $3,000 budget to execute the campaign they create.
At the end of the term, students will conduct post-campaign research to measure their success and give a formal presentation to the client summarizing their campaign and results.
“Wow! This opportunity is real world experience; this is a real, cool brand, which everyone knows. This is the kind of learning experience that we need to prepare us for a job after graduation,” said Laura Ringer, head of the Campaign Strategy and Implementation Department.
Chevrolet believes in building vehicles that anyone would be proud to own. Camaro, Equinox, Malibu and Cruze are no exception and are all vehicles within reach for college students. No other auto manufacturer offers more models with 30 miles per gallon highway or better. Vehicle quality is backed with the best coverage in America, including a 100,000 mile/5-year transferable Powertrain Limited Warranty plus Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation programs. Chevrolet has also received more Consumers Digest “Best Buy” awards for 2009 models than any other brand. Chevrolet is part of GM’s family of brands, including Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Find out more at www.chevrolet.com.
This opportunity is brought to the SJSU campus by EdVenture Partners, who acts as a liaison between Chevrolet and the participating campuses. EdVenture Partners is an organization dedicated to developing innovative industry-education partnership programs. The objective of such programs is to provide “hands-on” real world experience to students in tandem with providing marketing solutions and recruiting access at colleges and universities to clients. EdVenture Partners has designed and managed programs at over 650 campuses in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Morocco. Find out more at www.edventurepartners.com.
Watch for more information about the Chevrolet Campus Promotions program at SJSU throughout this fall term. For further inquires regarding the SJSU project, please contact Juan Luna at (310) 908-9785.

Conan is Coming to San Jose!

That's right, Conan O'Brien is coming to the San Jose State Event Center on May 5th! I'm not sure if booking a Cinco de Mayo show in Downtown San Jose was intentional or not, but my recommendation to you if you were able to snag tickets... arrive early and avoid diving down Santa Clara Street at all costs.

If you don't mind going solo, you may still be able to buy tickets here. Otherwise, there's always Ebay :/.
