New Asian Strip Mall Coming to North San Jose

The Silicon Valley International Plaza is coming to the corner of Brokaw and Old Oakland road (next to Costco) and will feature over 100,000sqft of Asian-themed retail. The main anchors will be an Asian supermarket and a dim sum/seafood restaurant, but based on the photo below I'm expecting a lot of restaurants. Thanks to xThomasTroublex from the San Jose Development forum for the info. You can find more details on this project right over here.

  1. Oh yay! Another strip mall for San Jose. How does this stuff get approved?! Sigh...

  2. Isn't there already an Asian themed strip mall on Brokaw @ Lundy only a couple of blocks from the proposed site if this one? How many strip malls do we need per square mile?

  3. Yeah, awesome! Another gross strip mall. This isn't completely deplorable because it's already located in a very auto-oriented area, but it's next to a corridor that has frequent and heavily used transit service. We could definitely do a lot better.

Josh, you might want to document the emerging EIR for a massive strip mall on the corner of Alma and and Monterrey highway. It's just .5 miles from the Tamien Caltrain/LR station and it's more of the same. Here's the draft EIR (very large file):

  6. Better than a dead zone but come on...another strip mall? What year is this?

It still boggles my mind that an area known for it's innovation and forward thinking continues to lag so far behind other major cities when it comes to urban planning and architecture. You would guess that with all of the great minds and money in the region we'd be living in a city that visually represented it's self-proclaimed title - "The Capital of Silicon Valley".

  8. for people who say "yet another strip mall?"... what would you prefer be built there? last i remember it was a DEAD eyesore of an industrial/commercial building that was sitting empty for the past years

  9. I hated it when PW closed, and hoped another "general" type grocery would open up in that spot. I realize there are many Asians in the area, but there is already a HUGE Asian shopping center just a few blocks away. CLUE people, many people living in that area are not Asian, it follows that non Asians buy groceries too. That area, is multi ethnic - Hispanic, Whites, East Indians etc. It is a disservice to the area to exclude the rest of the population.
