New Asian Strip Mall Coming to North San Jose

The Silicon Valley International Plaza is coming to the corner of Brokaw and Old Oakland road (next to Costco) and will feature over 100,000sqft of Asian-themed retail. The main anchors will be an Asian supermarket and a dim sum/seafood restaurant, but based on the photo below I'm expecting a lot of restaurants. Thanks to xThomasTroublex from the San Jose Development forum for the info. You can find more details on this project right over here.

  2. Isn't there already an Asian themed strip mall on Brokaw @ Lundy only a couple of blocks from the proposed site if this one? How many strip malls do we need per square mile?

    1. Yes. we need something else. Like Safeway a drug store would be nice and a few American Restaurants,

    2. Why can't we get a nice AMERICAN Shopping Center?
We NEED an AMERICAN Grocery Store, an AMERICAN Drug Store
and a few AMERICAN variety stores. We already have two Asian Shopping Centers kitty corner from each other on Lundy & Hostetter plus another Asian Market has taken over the old P&W on the eastern corner of Brokaw & Murphy(Hostetter). Enough with the Asian Markets, this is still part of the USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Yeah, awesome! Another gross strip mall. This isn't completely deplorable because it's already located in a very auto-oriented area, but it's next to a corridor that has frequent and heavily used transit service. We could definitely do a lot better.

Josh, you might want to document the emerging EIR for a massive strip mall on the corner of Alma and and Monterrey highway. It's just .5 miles from the Tamien Caltrain/LR station and it's more of the same. Here's the draft EIR (very large file):

  6. Better than a dead zone but come on...another strip mall? What year is this?

It still boggles my mind that an area known for it's innovation and forward thinking continues to lag so far behind other major cities when it comes to urban planning and architecture. You would guess that with all of the great minds and money in the region we'd be living in a city that visually represented it's self-proclaimed title - "The Capital of Silicon Valley".

  8. for people who say "yet another strip mall?"... what would you prefer be built there? last i remember it was a DEAD eyesore of an industrial/commercial building that was sitting empty for the past years

  9. I hated it when PW closed, and hoped another "general" type grocery would open up in that spot. I realize there are many Asians in the area, but there is already a HUGE Asian shopping center just a few blocks away. CLUE people, many people living in that area are not Asian, it follows that non Asians buy groceries too. That area, is multi ethnic - Hispanic, Whites, East Indians etc. It is a disservice to the area to exclude the rest of the population.

    2. Amen. My sentiments exactly. I live a half mile from this new strip mall and I'm not Asian and I'm so tired of seeing so much of this area dedicated to one ethnic group.

    3. Couldnt have said it better myself!!! I have to go into milpitas to go to safeway on Calavaras for grocery shopping. Yet there are two asian grocers right around the corner from me. Yah there is a safe way on berryessa but that one is crap. We need a regular supermarket that is not only focused on one ethnicity. PLEASE!

  10. I'm Asian and I don't even want another Asian plaza. So bummed, I was really hoping for a Safeway, Walgreens or Target!

  11. Its simply a matter of money. Developers in the area are finding the interest in pre-leasing major developments like this to come from Asians. As much as their is already an Asian presence on both corners of Lundy and Brokaw, it is up to the Safeway's and Walgreen's to want to develop those areas. I would of loved to see a more diverse shopping center, but over-developing this area with another Asian center is only going to hurt the business's that are already established. In my opinion, this is not a good choice. However, this doesn't mean the entire place will be all Asian. There are developments for 5 Guys and Chipotle in that strip mall.

  12. I am always hoping to have Trader Joe's or Wholefoods around that area, since none of those are this side of bay somehow...

    1. @First has a Fresh & Easy, opened a couple months ago. Also for organic local foods check out Veggie Box at the San Pedro Square Market.

  14. i was so hoping for non-asian...trader joes, sprouts, aaron brothers, anything non asian please...we already have too many asian markets in the area...safeway would be perfect!

  15. I was hoping for something like The Plant. Target or Safeway or Trader Joes, some food, maybe an Ulta or a Sephora too.

  16. Fresh & Easy would be a step up but Safeway has better and more organic options than Fresh & Easy. Definitely trendy. A regular Safeway would have been better than SF Market (aka stinky fish market).

  17. We would like to see a Zanotto's, Whole Foods, Nob Hill, and Safeway near this center. We miss PW market. We still have to drive cross town for nice restaurants.
