This month's Feature Artist Michael Foley will be on hand to answer any and all of your questions about his current exhibition "Keeping Up with Appearances".
Foley will also be on hand making monster portraits...portraits of people are cool, but turning people into monsters make things much better-so come by and become a monster yourself! If that wasn't enough he will demonstrate the making of fake blood just in time for Halloween.

The monsters of California's Great America's Halloween Haunt will be visiting to give you a good scare and a chance at some scary prizes and giveaways!

Shannon Amidon, Andre Hart Solo Exhibitions at KALEID April 6th

Selcouth new work by Shannon Amidon
I’m a collector of the odd and beautiful, the repulsive, rare and mysterious; objects that occupy the space between familiar and bizarre. Inspired by the seventeenth century age of exploration and cabinets of curiosity, this series comes from place of discovery and wonder where insects, specimens and other objects come together and tell a story.

By interlacing art, science, and culture I explore the connection between man-made and natural objects; evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for the classic age of exploration and discovery.

Of War and Peace, The Truth Just Twists, It's Curfew Gull Just Glides a collection of paintings by André Hart
In the middle of lies and truth, the work embodies a painful awareness of maybe a social and personal outlook. The paintings–or more of a collection of stories–people know or should know around a plain and sometimes encrypted picture of the state of the world. Though I couldn't totally say what these stories are fully about in a more specific term, I like to keep things general but still obvious. I cannot self analyze my work to the fullest degree, but I could give some insight to it. In all, as an artist I could never single myself to one form of work or commit to a label, but I can assure the work is always with the intentions to bring much thought and insight.

VRunningwolf%20012.jpg

Portraits of the Innerself new work by Valerie Runningwolf

The person we wake up with every morning or the stranger just passing on the street carries their truth safely hidden on the inside. Often it is a mask we put on every morning to face the world and take off each night in our dreams that is seen as reality.

Steam Punk Explorations new work by Dorothy Whitman

Steam punk is a sub genre that explores an alternate historical progression which is supportive of the environments and individuals. As with any genre in art it has its niches. I like exploring Victorian representations of technology and totems, as well as the inclusions of poetry and words as a way of looking deeper at the current expressions of the individual and what the meaningful components of their life truly are.

Artists' Reception: Friday, March 2nd, 7–11pm

Then take a short stroll to 2 new Phantom Galleries exhibitions!!

PG_guieu_.jpg
66 South First St.: Defragmentation 66 by Michele Guieu
Defragmentation 66 is an adaptation of the last installation I’ve made in San Diego: Defragmentation: Rearranging Bits and Pieces of Memory. It is an ongoing project and the occasion to reflect on bits and pieces of my memories, as I am recalling/documenting them. The project originated when I was about to leave San Diego after living there for 6 years. I thought about the different times I’ve left a place in my life. Defragmentation 66 is the first installation I am showing in San Jose since I’ve moved and it represents a link between the two towns – and beyond. The installation is on a smaller scale but uses some essential elements featured in the first version of the show: an ensemble of paintings, a painted background and videos. The videos in Defragmentation 66 are new memories and were taken here, in the bay area. The address number where the show is held, 66, is an interesting symbol in my life: the first time I came to the US, that’s the road I travelled on.
Exhibit on view through August 30th. Visible 24/7 from the sidewalk.

Gianfranco_June2011.jpg
95 South Market St.: Roundels sculptures by Gianfranco Paolozzi

"I was looking in the recycle container full of paper from flexo printing presses.
That’s when I felt the passion again: round surfaces screaming to be used. I looked at them changing on the floor of my studio. I had to use my marks, my moments on the surfaces as a sign of me being there.
That’s when the roundels were born." ~Gianfranco
Exhibit on view through August 30th. Visible 24/7 from the sidewalk.

The mother of all South First Fridays is coming this week. Prepare yourself for tons of art, live music, vendors and even a flock of food trucks. It's a FREE event downtown and our stage is just one piece of a larger collaboration with many artists, vendors, musicians filling the South First Street area that night. MORE ABOUT THE PERFORMERS ON KSCU / GFP STAGE:
The Glowing Stars:
http://theglowingstarsband.wordpress.com/
There are many chiptune artists, but not a lot of chiptune bands. The Glowing Stars — guitarist/vocalist Lizzie Cuevas and drummer/Game Boy synth programmer Matt Payne — combines the clicky waveforms and perfect arpeggios of 8-bit processors with the fury of live drums and distorted guitars. Influenced as much by Frank Zappa and Freddie Mercury as Mega Man and Metroid, the band’s wistfully emotional lyrics are more boy-meets-girl than Game-Boy-meets-end-boss. With customized game hardware sharing the stage with 100-watt half-stacks, The Glowing Stars are half Weezer, half Wario – in other words, utterly unique.
