Shop Small Saturday

Instead of supporting giant chain stores this "Black Friday weekend," why not support local Downtown San Jose businesses?

9 Downtown shops are participating in Shop Small Saturday tomorrow, Nov. 26. All are colorful, offering an eclectic assortment of merchandise perfect for holiday gift-giving.

They’re a collection of museum shops and true moms-and-pops. These unique shops are one-of-a kind.

San Jose has more than 56,000 small businesses that have fewer than 35 employees.

The day is dedicated to supporting small businesses, getting shoppers to do their holiday shopping at local retailers, and boosting the local economy. These small businesses constitute a significant proportion of the San Jose economy and are a vital factor in creating local jobs.

These are the participating shops:

  • KALEID Gallery, 88 S., Fourth St. (1)
  • Tabard Theatre Co, 28 N. San Pedro St. (2)
  • Children's Discovery Museum Gift Shop (CDM): 180 Woz Way (3)
  • Museum of Art Gift Shop: 110 S Market Street (4)
  • Tech Museum Gift Shop: 201 S Market St (5)
  • San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles: 520 S 1st Street (6)
  • Joan Philips, Executive Director or Lousie Horkey, Volunteer, Events and Retail Coordinator
  • Cathedral Gift Shop: 80 S Market St (7)
  • Hammer and Lewis: 19 S First Street (8)
  • Diaz Menswear: 70 E Santa Clara Street (9)

This event has been put together by the San Jose Downtown Association and you can find more information as well as an interactive map over here.

100 Things To Do In San Jose Before You Die

When I first found about about this book, I was expecting few surprises. I assumed that I would easily be checking off 90+ of the 100 items listed in its pages. I was wrong. How far did I get you ask? 54. That's right, as a hardcore San Jose aficionado that purposefully seeks out all the cool things to do in San Jose, I'm at 54/100 from this book.

"100 Things To Do In San Jose Before You Die" was written by Susannah Greenwood, the online content manager and social media princess for the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau. She has lived in San Jose for the past 14 years and has done a great job assembling this book. The best part is she's a clever writer with a great sense of humor. I even read through the items that I had already checked off my list to get her perspective.

I recommend the book to anyone who is a fan of San Jose and guarantee there will be items in here that you did not know about. You can buy the book now on paperback or get the digital Kindle edition over here.

New Farmers Market Coming to Westgate Center

Federal Realty is continuing to take concepts from their flagship property--Santana Row--and inject them into Westage Center. Instead of being a small mall, they are trying to turn it into much more of a community destination. The latest improvement to Westgate is a new weekly Saturday Farmer's Market run by the West Coast Farmers Market Association (same group that oversees the Cupertino, Carmel, and Half Moon Bay markets).

I'm really liking the direction Federal Realty is taking this shopping center! See the press release below for more information.

Seasonal produce, locally-baked treats and handcrafted, artisan goods offered every Saturday at the San Jose shopping center

San Jose, CA – Organic fruits and vegetables, specialty baked goods, prepared foods, handmade soaps, honey and glassware are among the vendors that will be setting up tables at Westgate Center beginning Saturday, March 21.

The shopping mall is launching its first farmers market, in association with the West Coast Farmers Market Association, which also oversees popular markets in Cupertino, Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay and Carmel.

Among the vendors and their wares:

  • Cipponeri Farms - vegetables and strawberries
  • Hamlow Ranches - stone fruit such as apricots and peaches
  • Medina Berry Farm - blackberries, strawberries, blueberries
  • Anguiano Farms (based in Santa Maria) - berries, avocado, other produce
  • J&M Farms – organic greens
  • Squash Blossom – baked goods
  • Jenny Chu - baked goods
  • Fish Princess – handmade soaps
  • David Patrick Blown Glass

Details: The farmers market will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday beginning March 21 in the center food court area next to Gong Cha.

Other events at Westgate Center:

Santa Clara Orchid Show and Sale, Thursday, March 19 to Sunday, March 22
The Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society is showing and selling flowers from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on
Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Photos with the Easter Bunny, Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22; and March 28 through April 4.
It's picture time with spring’s favorite furry friend! The bunny is ready for his close-up from 11 a.m.
or noon to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. most days with breaks in the afternoon.
Please check www.ShopWestgateCenter.com for exact times, pricing and details.

Following an extensive $15 million renovation and the addition of new shops such as J. Crew Factory, Nike Factory Outlet and Gap Factory Outlet, restaurants such as Veggie Grill and a children’s soft play area, Westgate Center offers a convenient and dynamic shopping experience for the community.

Polaroid Fotobars at Westfield Oakridge & Valley Fair

The other day I was contacted by a Polariod Fotobar rep wanting to let us know that they had opened “micro-stores” (giant interactive kiosks) at Westfield Oakridge (and now, Westfield Valley Fair.) During your holiday shopping you may have seen them or event sat down and you’ve already experienced them. But if not.. if the crowds were just too much, you have plenty of time to still check them out because they are PERMANENT additions to the malls.

So, I love photography. You may have seen some of my stuff here and there, maybe visited First to Market when I had my photography up (or even in the SPUR office window a few years ago!) so I felt pretty connected to this and wanted to check it out. Especially now that the holidays were over and the malls are back to being just moderately insane again.

I was set up with a meeting with “Fototender” Cory who was super helpful. He showed me all the products you can buy; trendy, colorful shadow  boxes, “rustic”-style or glass and metal prints for a snazzier upscale or even commercial use, and all the neato photo-related holders you could ever want.

The weekend I went, they were holding a promo for 6 free prints. Their standard prints (the size of a Polaroid!) are just $1. They’re printed on a thicker cardboard stock, which makes me feel like they will last for awhile.

Much to my surprise, Team Polaroid hooked me up with some complementary goods. So I sat down and Cory showed me the super easy process to get my photos printed.

First you create a quick account and immediately get the choice to upload from various sites (Flickr, Instagram, Facebook) or direct from your phone. I opted for my phone only as it would have taken me FOREVER to choose photos from my Flickr account. Plus my phone has all the most recent photos and a few favorite older ones saved on it.

After you create an account and provide your cell number to get a link texted to your phone. From there, I easily chose what photos I wanted to upload. The photos will appear in front of you on the computer you’re using. Magic.

From there you can adjust the placement and framing. Go old school with the square format with the thicker bottom border in either portrait or landscape. Or use all the available space and have an equal, thin border.

I noticed one of my photos was a little dark and while the screen said I could do effects/edit - Cory told me that the option had significantly slowed the computers so they had to remove that feature. Kind of a bummer, but at the same time I bet it cut down on how long people sat at the computers. So that said - adjust your photos before you upload!

Once you’ve uploaded and paid for your goods, you take your receipt and hit the mall! Go browse the stores, eat lunch, drink some coffee, whatever else you find fun at the mall to do - go do it. After your prints are done, you will get a text (or email) noting they are ready for pickup. I was told that on average, a small batch of about six photos took around 15 minutes to print. Obviously this would be if there are only a moderate amount of orders ahead of yours and not a super large amounts.

I decided to go with a couple of their black shadow boxes. Black goes with everything, right? These shadow boxes have a metal panel in the middle. All you do is adhere a Polaroid-shaped flat magnet to the back of your photo and plop that sucker into the frame. Voila!

Ok this is where I admit, I probably should have chosen a bunch of San Jose-themed photos for this post right? BUT, right now on my phone it’s full of either photos of my daughter and husband or food photos. So, you get to see those photos instead. But just imagine your own pics of awesome San Jose - easily printed out, slapped into these frames, and displayed.

Maybe you run a local coffee shop and want to include some photos of those super neato latte designs you’ve been creating? Here you go!

Or invite your customers to share their prints with you and you can create a little display. For $1 per print, that’s some really easy customer-love you could provide.

There’s a quote from the press release I was provided that I found interesting…

"Over one billion pictures are taken every day, and Polaroid Fotobar is a fun, easy way to take them from your Facebook timeline to your wall at home," said Warren Struhl, the company's founder and chief executive officer.  “Polaroid Fotobar is all about recapturing the magic and instant gratification of creating cherished pieces of art with your pictures."

It’s true. We’re in such an Instagrammy-Facebooky-world that most of our photos don’t make it off our phones/accounts as often, and thanks to the retro-fun that Polaroid is providing, we can do that for an affordable amount.

And you don’t *have* to go to the mall to print these, you can do it from home and have them shipped, of course. But that might take some of the fun out of it!

I think I might create a little San Jose-related project from this… the hamster is awake and the wheels are turning...

Hey look, it's ME!

Bloomingdales Confirmed for Valley Fair

In 2008 there was an epic expansion plan for Valley Fair mall that included 500,000 SQFT of additional retail, including two new anchors: Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus. Unfortunately, the great recession postponed those plans indefinitely. Now it looks like the Valley Fair expansion is about to restart. Last week when Macy's announced that it was closing its Valco store, it also announced that a 150,000 SQFT Bloomingdales is coming to Valley Fair and would employ 250 people. They even provided an expected opening date of fall 2017.

I can't find the original map that showed where the new stores would be, but can tell you that the original plan called for a third concourse in the highlighted area below. If they go by the previous plan, the expansion will also include 50 new stores, outdoor Santana Row-like dining areas, and 3,000 new parking spaces.

San Jose Stats: Silicon Valley Cities Topped NYC for Spending

When you think of heavy consumer spending, New York is likely one of the first cities that comes to min. However, it looks like Silicon Valley is quickly pulling ahead with this metric... whether that is a good or bad thing I'm not so sure.

In New York, the average spend per shopping transaction is a hefty $239.85. However, it is $345.09 in Palo Alto, $314.50 in Mountain View, $278.30 in Sunnyvale, and $266.46 in Fremont. That make four Silicon Valley cities that now surpass New York in consumer spending per transaction. Not far behind New York is SF at $235.90 and San Jose at $216.86. So of the top 10 cities with the highest consumer spending, five were in Silicon Valley.

New Costco Officially Coming to South San Jose

Last week developers confirmed that a new Costco would be coming to South San Jose on a 76-acre parcel near the intersection of Highway 85 and Monterey Highway. This will be San Jose's 4th Costco--the other 3 are in Almaden, North San Jose, and off Tully.

The Wholesaler will be part of a project that includes up to 780 residential units, 154,000 SQFT of retail, and 260,000 SQFT of office or R&D.

Given the large number of people that currently live in this part of South San Jose (as well as future residents from all the new development there), this should benefit an area that is under-serviced by retail. I will also mention that this will be the closest San Jose Costco to a Caltrain station, not that I foresee anyone carrying reams of toilet paper on the train.

San Jose Harvest Festival Kicks Off Today

The San Jose Harvest Festival starts today and continues all the way through Sunday. Instead of going to the mall, why not look for more unique and personal gifts at one of the largest indoor arts and crafts festivals. Over 24,000 items will be available for purchase, all handmade in the US.

The event is located at the San Jose Convention Center and also includes live music, entertainment, and kid's zone, and festival foods. Tickets are $9 for general admission, $7 for seniors, and $4 for kids. For more information, head over here.

Top Rated Craft Show Boasts Shopping, Music, Food and Prizes

(San Jose, Calif.)--- Don't be fooled by empty "door buster" deals designed to lure you to the Big Box retail stores this Black weekend. For a truly enjoyable shopping experience, visit the San Jose Harvest Festival®, November 28-30 at the San Jose Convention Center, and help support the independent artisan instead.

The San Jose Harvest Festival® is one of the largest indoor arts and craft shows on the West Coast and was recently rated among the top 200 craft shows in the country.  The show offers over 24,000 handmade arts and crafts, including original art, jewelry, photography, clothing, specialty foods, holiday decor, and more.

Many of the artists at the Harvest Festival offer bargains and show specials that can only be obtained at the event. Plus, attendees can meet the artists and can often get their purchases personalized. There will be a grab bag prize drawing each day, and the Grand Prize drawing, happening of the show, features a brand new ipad mini.

Throughout the weekend, the Harvest Festival offers upbeat live music, including performances from Tom Rigney and Flambeau, a band that blends American Roots styles into a completely original sound, mixing infectious grooves with deep musicality and spectacular solos. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a special one time performance by the Sweet Adeline's.

Gingerbread on the Go will co-host the KidZone and will feature make-and-take gingerbread cookie projects. Nature of Art for Kids, an eco-friendly company offering non-toxic art supplies for children, will also be participating by offering crafts using "green" and repurposed materials. Plus, parents can stop by the New York Life booth to obtain a free Child ID kit.

The Harvest Festival will welcome back its official non-profit partner, Humane Society Silicon Valley, a charity committed to animal welfare in every facet. Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) will receive half of the proceeds from shopping bag sales and all of the proceeds from the bag and parcel check.

Loaves and Fishes, a San Jose based non-profit organization which serves free, nutritious meals to the working poor, families, homeless and seniors, will be the food donation partner for the show. Anyone who brings a monetary or non-perishable food donation to the show will receive $2 off their admission.

Vietnam Town Expanding By 186,000 SQFT

Even though there are 51 unsold retail condos in the 120-unit first phase of Vietnam Town, the owners have decided to go through with a second phase. The project will include an additional 186,000 SQFT with 141 more retail condos. These would be distributed across a total of five buildings with the average retail condo size being around 1,000 SQFT.

Part of Vietnam Town phase two will be a single 40,000 SQFT pad that could easily accommodate a grocery store. 99 Ranch Market or Lion Market have already been identified as potential candidates. There are also plans to build a parking structure on the site.

This seems like an ideal place in the middle of Little Saigon for a mixed-use village, so I'm a bit disappointing that a housing component was not included in the project. This could have become a Vietnamese Santana Row. At least doubling down on the project will increase the chances for success and turning it into a regional draw.

SJMADE Coming to Valley Fair

Finally we are getting some local flavor into Valley Fair! It sounds like SJMADE is about to open a popup shop in the mall that will feature local vendors and undoubtedly some San Jose-themed apparel. If you are a potential vendor, more info is below. For everyone else, the popup will be located across from White House Black Market and Zara (see map).

San Jose Made
Dear Potential SJMADE Holiday Popup Vendor,

It is with great excitement that we announce this fantastic popup opportunity with Westfield Valley Fair! Due to the nature of pop-ups and temporary spaces, we know this information may be coming to you later than expected, but we hope that you are able to join us in this very promising holiday retail venture!
During this 2013 holiday season from November 15th through December 31st, San Jose Made (SJMADE) is operating a Holiday Popup location at a prime retail shop location at Westfield Valley Fair on Stevens Creek Road in Santa Clara, CA.

In order to maintain an operating storefront during normal mall hours, our programming at this holiday popup location is two-fold. The space will house a permanent "Best of San Jose MADE" retail store during all normal mall operating hours, while on weekends (Friday to Sunday) we have designated Weekend Vendor Spaces available for YOU to rent and be part of this exciting venture!

Our retail affiliates, Showroom San Jose, who currently have a small local retail shop at San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose will operate the permanent "Best of San Jose Made" pop-up at this location. They are purchasing items at wholesale cost from SJMADE vendors and retailing solely SJMADE vendor products. If your best-selling product should be at this "Best of" shop, let us know! We will send you an application form.

We look forward to seeing you in one of these Weekend Vendor Spaces. In this packet you will find information about Westfield Valley Fair and detailed logistics about your Weekend Vendor Space. If you have any questions, please contact us via email at: sanjosemade@gmail.com and we'll get a vendor packet to you ASAP.

For those of you who would like to talk to us in person, we are holding an open house at the SJMADE Holiday Pop-Up location at Westfield Valley Fair on Monday, November 11th from 7:00p to 9:00p. Come-by to take a look at the space and drop-off your application form!

Looking forward to the holiday retail season,
The team at SJMADE

Halston Coming to Valley Fair

Valley Fair is about to get one of the very first Halston retail stores. This particular designer is known for "retro" styles based in the '60s and '70s. What makes this significant is that there are only two Halston Heritage standalone stores in existence, one in New York City and the other in Los Angeles. This would make San Jose it's third location and the only announced store for Northern California.

Valley Fair is turning into a destination for these exclusive hard-to-find brands. It's days as a typical suburban mall are numbered, especially with their future expansion that will bring many more unique brands, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and a Santana Row-ish outdoor area.
