Content Magazine - Issue 5.2 Pick-up Party

The best magazine in San Jose is hosting yet another pick-up party for it's readers, contributors, and featured personalities tomorrow. What makes this one even more special than its predecessors is the location... Blackbird Tavern! You'll get an exclusive sneak peak into Downtown San Jose's latest watering hole and bistro, and I think it's going to be awesome. To top it off, you will even get a free drink just for showing up. Seriously, what other magazine would do this kind of stuff for its readers?

Content Magazine Pick Up Party for Issue 5.0

The latest issue of Content Magazine comes out tomorrow and they provide a "delivery option" that you will not find offered by many other magazines (if any). They invite readers to come party with them and pick up their issue at the venue! You can meet not only the writers and photographers, but also some of the San Joseans featured in the magazine in person.

This pick-up party is very special as it marks Content Magazine's first year in print. Also, I couldn't think of a better venue to celebrate than Vino Vino (4.5 stars on yelp, 180 reviews). If you are one of the few people than haven't been to this wine bar yet, you are missing out.

For more info, check out their Facebook event over here.

It has been a whole year since the inaugural Content Magazine print edition, and it continues to get better and better. You can head over to some of the places listed below to pick up your hard copy, but I would recommend subscribing to make sure you don't miss an issue!

Content Magazine Pick-up Party Tomorrow

My favorite publication is having a "Pick-Up Party" over at Willow Glen's newest Gastropub, The Table. This eatery is owned by Jim Stump (A.P. Stumps & Los Gatos Brewing Co.) so my expectations are high for the food and drinks. Hop on in anytime between 6 and 8pm, pick up the best San Jose-oriented magazine on the planet, throw back a few drinks/appetizers, and hang out with the awesome staff of Content!

The address is 1110 Willow Street and the Facebook page for the event is here.

SJ Metblogs: Content Launches Print Era

Content Magazine has officially launched their print edition, and it looks fantastic. Matt from SJ Metblogs has already done a blog post about their launch event (below). I would highly encourage anyone reading this blog to subscribe to the magazine, and make sure to flip to page 18 for an interview featuring Metblogs and The San Jose Blog!

Content Magazine "Cultivator" Daniel Garcia at the print launch party.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign we reported on previously, San Jose’s local personality and fashion magazine Content has now printed its first issue. A launch party last night was attended by numerous recognizable local figures.

The printed magazine is dominated by interviews of local personalities somehow connected to the “Tech” theme of the issue, including politicians, artists, inventors, and even a blogger or two. I thought the most interesting story was an interview with Joel Slayton, director of the Zer01 art biennial. The interview covers Slayton’s history in art, starting at MIT, and future plans for Zer01. An interview with Slave Labor Graphics publisher Dan Vado brings together insights on the downtown San Jose business culture and the broader publishing business. Beyond those two interviews, there are 10 other stories filling out the issue.

The final few pages of the magazine switch over from interviews and profiles to fashion, with two multi-page photo spreads featuring dresses from The Usuals and men’s shirts from So What Industries. The photography is stylish, but some of the spreads don’t account for the fact that the binding of the magazine doesn’t let the pages lie open flat.

Content Magazine is attempting to finance their operations mainly through reader support rather than advertising. This keeps the “content” at the forefront and avoids the reader having to wade through ads to find the stories. A 6-issue annual subscription is now available for $42.

Content Magazine Kickstarter

To put it bluntly, Content Magazine is the highest quality publication I have ever seen regarding San Jose culture. I think it perfectly encapsulates what San Jose is all about, and where we're going as a community. The last issue featured articles on The San Pedro Square Market, Dishcrawl, Higher Fire, the San Jose Fire Museum, and Sally Ashton (Santa Clara County Poet Laureate). If those sound familiar, it's because those are exactly the types of topics that are promoted on this blog. The difference is that Content Magazine has in depth writing and stunning photos on every page. Come to think of it, it's one of the nicest looking magazines I've seen period.

Content just put up a Kickstarter page to help launch the print version of their next magazine. Please have a look below and enjoy a 90 second video that sums up the project and then read all about what they are planning to use the money for. If you are ready to make a small contribution and get some free swag in the process, just head right over here!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

San Jose has long been the hub of tech innovation.  This same type of creativity has also fueled a different side of San Jose--the side that has moveable feasts, fashion shows, artists, tea bars, photographers, and speakeasies, to name a few.
As residents of San Jose, we started Content Magazine, a life & style magazine unlike any of its predecessors, to tell the stories of these inspiring individuals and businesses in San Jose. It's honest, visually appealing and highlights this creative side of San Jose.

It’s been great publishing online and using Print-on-Demand, but in a world of electronic-this and electronic-that, a physical magazine continues to elicit feelings that an e-reader simply can’t.  Digital is great…but every time we show our pretty iPad friendly version to people, the response is always the same:  "How can I get that in print?"
So, we're ready to take the next step: to print a magazine that doesn't compromise on the aesthetics.
We're grass roots.  We’ve defined our vision.  We're building our brand.  But, we aren’t too proud to admit that the time has come to ask for a little help.
Why should you contribute?
  • You love San Jose, and you want your city to have a magazine with a quality and style that actually represents the people of San Jose.
  • You think "hyper-local" is a great thing. We like to say we are "for the people of San Jose and by the people of San Jose," so clearly, we do too.
  • You love supporting emerging artists and celebrating local cultural creatives.
  • You believe that behind every shop owner, designer, artist and engineer is a story that is waiting to be told.
  • You like the idea of a localized magazine inspiring you to explore all that San Jose has to offer.
  • You believe that a quality publication has the opportunity to positively influence the way people think of San Jose.
Where's the money going to go?
We're raising money to:
  • Print the launch issue of Content Magazine with the quality and aesthetic we've always imagined.
  • Reduce the purchase price for our readers.
  • Provide printed copies of Content Magazine to local businesses, potential sponsors and city influencers, demonstrating the potential of a quality magazine in San Jose.
  • And, since you asked, while I'm sure our dedicated contributors have loved eating homemade pastries in exchange for their hard work, we'd love to pay our artists for their time and talent.
We hope you can see the passion we have for the city of San Jose and the people that inspire us.  Thanks for supporting the vision of our magazine through your contribution.
Be Content.
