Edward Nowak's Downtown San Jose Photos

Edward Nowak is a talented photographer that lives in Downtown San Jose. I stumbled upon his work thanks to a post by Cardinal2007 in the San Jose Development Forum. I absolutely love his photos! He captured some perspectives of our city that I have not seen before. Below are a few of my favorites, but he has many over here.

Sourisseau News: Arnold Del Carlo (The Valley's Photographer)

In the latest edition of Sourisseau news, learn about a photographer that has been documenting the transformations in the valley across multiple decades. Even at 94 years old, Arnold Del Carlo is still taking photos to this day. The Sourisseau academy is even planning to release a documentary film on his fascinating life and work--more to come on that in the future.

DelCarlo - The Valley's Photographer from TAW on Vimeo.

EDITORS NOTE: The Del Carlo Photograph Collection resides at the Sourisseau Academy for State and Local History and spans a remarkable 30+ years. Few professional photographers exhibit Del Carlo’s versatility, making the collection all the more unique. And at 94, Del is still shooting pictures. Many thanks from all of us at Sourisseau Academy!

Photo of Hart's Department Store

Below is a photo of Hart's Department Store from the 1950s. It was one of the last department stores to shut down, closing its doors for the last time in 1968 after a 102 year history in Downtown San Jose. You can also see the Basilica poking its head in the background of the photo.

Aerial Photo of Downtown San Jose

This photo was posted in the San Jose Development Forum by cardinal2007. Amazingly, it was taken from a plane window on an early morning flight leaving SJC. Ken Sweezey took the photo in 2013. It's already missing several buildings (One South, Centerra, Courthouse, etc.). It would be interesting to see the same shot in 2018 after Silvery Towers, the Pierce, the Gateway Tower, the St. James Park Towers, Symphony Hall, AC Hotel, and the SJSU projects are complete.

San Pedro Square Market Sign Lighting Photos

Jennifer Bullock has some beautiful photos of the San Pedro Square Market Sign Lighting on Flickr right over here! The Market has actually changed a lot since those photos were taken, and I would highly recommend going there on the weekend to check it out. My current recommendations for the eateries that are open:

Vino Vino: Riesling and Brie, Prosciutto, and Fig Chutney sandwiches
Pizza Bocca Lupo: Margarita Pizza with Buffalo Cheese and Cooked Prosciutto
San Pedro Square Market Bar: Blueberry, Strawberry, or Watermelon Mojitos

Lost San Jose Launches a New Photo Blog!

Lost San Jose is one of, if not my favorite photography site focused on San Jose. What I didn't know until this weekend was that in addition to doing guerrilla photography, Josh Marcotte is also a writer and poet. He's put together a pretty compelling blog for San Joseans and it is being updated regularly.

Check it out right over here!

Photos of subZERO 2011

This is subZERO!  It was my first time being at subZERO and it was great, a night of art, music, food and friends.

For me it all started off early at 5p doing some behind the scenes photos for Trina Merry the body paint artist.  It was like a zoo, we had makeup artist, hairstylist, painters, models and dancers everywhere.  It was pretty hectic and I’m sure a logistics nightmare dealing with so many people but Dez did a great job of keeping everything moving forward.

In the end even I ended up helping to shuttle and escort the models/dancers everywhere before the show started.

Got some pre-show pictures of the Tahira: the Pure Dance Theatre.  Imani and Trina collaborated together to create an exhilarating mashup of living art.  Elizabeth, one of the living statues, looked great with her intricate hairstyle.  I was able to talk to James, the hair stylist, briefly and he came up with the style as a fusion of Victorian and Modernism.

Got a quickshot of Trina + Regard Tang, one of the Makeup Artist.

Not everything went according to plan, due the sound checks taking longer than expected but eventually the Black Lotus Fashion Show kicked off.  Most of the outfits were gothic in nature and fantastic.

Finally the Tahira Dance Troupe kicked off and it was brilliant!  Part of me wanted to just stop bothering with photos and watch them dance.

Afterwards, went to meetup with Josh and the others at the Single Barrel.  A massive line as always, but worth the wait.

We then went around to check out the rest of subZERO and although I was suppose to do more photos of the event I ended up taking photos of us instead.  I did get some fun photos of us, but the girls would beat me for posting them.

I still managed to get a few shots of what was going on.  The Disco Fish Mobile!

Here are the cosplay body paint models portraying DC comic book characters.   I actually drove Wonder Woman over, pushing the speed limit a few times to make it on time. =)

Luckily got some of the blacklight performers as well before the night ended.

To wind down the night we grabbed some food at the Mogo BBQ truck.  We hung out by the crub while waiting.  Now my question is, will she be towed for stopping?

Oh and I bet you’ve never thought of a massive Tofu Burrito before did you?  Well, the verdict is that it’s quite good.

It’ll have to be something I try next time since I got the tacos instead.  I have no picture of the tacos as I’m busy eating them, so here’s a picture of Josh eating his burrito to wrap things up.  (Get it? Burrito, wrap? haha)

You can check out the rest of the photos at the T2L site here.
