Playful People Productions Presents: INTO THE WOODS

Playful People Productions Presents:
INTO THE WOODS

Once Upon A Time, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine wrote INTO THE WOODS, a magical musical comedy based on the fractured fairy tales of The Brothers Grimm. Sondheim and Lapines story asks the question: what would happen if all of our favorite storybook characters (and a couple of their own invention) ended up meeting one another in those magical woods? Sondheim and Lapine created a dark and funny story about a Witch's curse that condemns a Baker and his Wife to a life without children. The husband and wife so deeply want to have a child that they close up shop to embark on a quest through an enchanted forest to find the four items required by The Witch to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as gold.

There in the woods, the Baker and his wife happen upon the familiar storybook characters we all grew up reading and watching and pretending to be: Cinderella, on her way to the festival to dance with a prince; Rapunzel, held captive in a doorless tower by a wicked witch; Little Red Riding Hood, on her way to her Grandmothers house; The Wolf, who wants to eat Little Red Riding Hood for lunch; Jack and his magical beanstalk; and The Giant, who chases Jack down the beanstalk and back into the arms of his overly protective mother. We also encounter not one but two handsome princes, one mysterious man, a wicked Stepmother, two wicked stepsisters, Cinderellas indifferent father, the ghost of Cinderellas Mother, and many other magical and familiar characters you are sure to recognize. There's even an objective Narrator to help us keep all of these twisted stories straight.

Will the Baker and his wife succeed in breaking the witch's curse? Will Cinderella marry her Prince? Will Rapunzel let down her hair? Will Little Red Riding Hood get to Granny's house in time to save her from the Wolfs belly? Will Jack slay the giant? And what happens after they all get their wish - even the Witch - and live happily ever after? Find out when Playful People Productions presents the full-length production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapines INTO THE WOODS. Two casts (Adult and Teen) are under the direction of New York-based theatre artists Gary De Mattei and Caryn Hartglass, the same team that brought our audiences FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and last seasons THE MUSIC MAN. You wont want to miss this, the final show of our summer season. With a small ensemble of professional musicians playing live onstage, and lovely costumes and scenery, INTO THE WOODS is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for audiences ages 9 years old and above.

Triple tower and new theater proposed in SoFA!

The latest high-rise proposal in Downtown San Jose is easily one of the most ambitious. Invicta Towers would consist of three (!) high-rise buildings between South Second and First Street Downtown. This is the heart of the SoFA district with several museums and theaters within a one block radius. The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, and MACLA would all practically be inside of the project (they are buildings between the towers in the first image).

Invicta would include 667 residential units and 41,500 SQFT of tail and public arts exhibition space. Part of that space would be a 12,000 SQFT theater for live performances. Tower A would be 295 feet tall and 27 stories, making it the 2nd-tallest tower Downtown.

Each tower would have at least one restaurant on the ground floor, but the project will support a total of 4-10 dining options. Parking would be in a 4-story below-grade parking structure.

While not mentioned in the article, the renders have a swimming pool on top of each of the towers, one covered and two uncovered. It looks like the amenity space will be on the penthouse floors, which is a great idea given the views from this location and our weather.

Hats off to developers, which are stepping up and continuing to raise the bar on Downtown proposals. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get so see some more projects break ground before the end of the year.

In this comedy with a heart, Mom has been dead for 11 months and shows up at her husband’s birthday party as a ghost with a mission. Like Clarence in It’s A Wonderful Life, she has to accomplish a task to earn her wings. Only what the task actually is, is a mystery. There are so many things to fix. The problem is complicated by the fact that the only person who can hear or see Mom is her daughter who has been ordered by the court to spend Dad’s birthday with him as part of her Anger Management Program. One by one the family's secrets are peeled away revealing a shocking truth that surprises even our ghost.

The Toxic Avenger is coming to The Stage Theater Jun 7-23

2009 Outer Critics Circle Award- Outstanding Musical

THE TOXIC AVENGER
Book and Lyrics by Joe DiPietro
Music and Lyrics by David Bryan
Based on Lloyd Kaufman's film of the same name

Directed by Jonathan Williams
June 7 – July 17, 2017
Opening Night: Saturday June 10, 2017

San Jose, CA (April 2017) - San Jose Stage Company is proud to wrap its culturally diverse 34th season with the award winning Off-Broadway hit musical The Toxic Avenger.

TOXIC LOVE STORY WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL TWIST

Based on Lloyd Kaufman's cult film, this laugh-out-loud musical has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor, bullies, mobsters, and stiletto-wearing back-up singers.

After attempting to clean up Tromaville, the most polluted town in New Jersey, Melvin Ferd is dumped into a vat of radioactive toxic waste, only to reemerge as The Toxic Avenger. Affectionately known as Toxie, our new hero is a mutant freak with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark. He's out to save New Jersey, end global warming, and woo the blind librarian in town.

About the Playwrights:

Joe DiPietro’s current Broadway hit Memphis won the Tony Award for Best Musical and two additional Tony Awards (Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (with David Bryan). Joe was born and raised off Exit 166 in New Jersey and thus has been a Toxic Avenger fan for the last twenty years. Joe wrote the book & lyrics to I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, the longest running musical revue in New York history which has had hundreds of productions across the country and around the world. He also wrote the book and lyrics to the Broadway musical All Shook Up, and the award-winning musical, The Thing About Men, which has played internationally. His plays include the Edgar Award-winning mystery, The Art of Murder, as well as the long-running hit comedy Over the River and through the Woods, which has had over a hundred productions around the world and is currently being developed into a feature film. He lives in Manhattan and Connecticut, but his heart will always be in New Jersey.

David Bryan  is the keyboard player, songwriter and a founding member of Bon Jovi. They have sold over 130 million records worldwide, performed more than 2,600 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans, and were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. On the band s award-winning CD Have A Nice Day , David and Jon wrote the song Last Cigarette. David began a career as a composer and lyricist of musicals. The song, Memphis Lives In Me, which he performs on Bon Jovi’s recent box set, is actually from his musical, MEMPHIS which won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. David also won a Tony for Best Orchestrations (with Daryl Waters) and Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (with Joe DiPietro). David has also dedicated his time to become a National Spokesperson for VH1’s Save The Music Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of music education in America’s schools.  He was conceived, born and raised in New Jersey. As a young man, he saw The Toxic Avenger at a midnight showing in Newark, and from that day on, he dreamed of writing a musical about the first mutant superhero from his home state.

San Jose Murder Mystery Dinners

Last weekend, my wife and I attended "A Dance with Death," a 50's-themed interactive murder mystery dinner in Downtown San Jose. The event was a blast!

The story is told during three acts where the mystery unfolds live. There are actors but some of the guests are also turned into characters in the story. Obviously, one or more people are not going to make it through the night and your goal is to figure out who the murderer (or murderers) are. In between the acts you have time to do investigation and interact with each character to collect clues. Throughout the show you also get a three-course meal and can order drinks to help lubricate your brain.

The Murder Mystery Co. hosts a dinner every Sunday at the Old Spaghetti Factory in San Pedro Square. They have been performing in the Bay Area for the last 3+ years and have a very talented group of actors. There are different themes and stories, but it looks like the two that are alternating right now are "A Dance with Death" and "Midnight at the Masquerade." The also host a Thursday event in Redwood City at another OSF.

Symphony Silicon Valley Performs Lord of the Rings - Tickets Still Available for April 16, 17, 18 and 19

San Jose, CA --- “Nine is a pretty good number,” according to J.R.R.Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings. Numerical themes have been analyzed throughout the history of mankind, music, and mythology. In the case of Lord of the Rings, J.R..R.Tolkien made a big deal out of the number nine.

When Symphony Silicon Valley performs the Lord of the Rings trilogy,  simultaneous to the films being shown on a huge screen, the number nine will be audible.

Lord of the Rings : The Trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) will be performed April 16, 17, 18 and 19 at the Center for the Performing Arts in San Jose.* The Symphony Silicon Valley, choruses and soloists will be on stage beneath and in front of the screen for these historic performances.

Nine is present in other motifs, and musical arrangements, where certain themes are heard over and over. In the case of LOTR the number nine can be heard in several important themes. One has only to listen closely to discern three groupings of three notes played in the second phrase of the Fellowship Theme. The first phrase of the History of the Ring Theme contains nine notes which, if played simultaneously, form the Ringwraith’s signature chord. In a ‘trilogy of trinities’ nine notes form the backbone of much of the stunning music in this score.

Author and musicologist Doug Adams explains in his book The Music of the Lord of the Rings Film: A Comprehensive Account of Howard Shore’s Scores, the themes of the score, places, events, and people, as depicted in nines. There are nine people who set off on the journey, nine original rings, nine notes in many phrases within the score, and more nines throughout the story.  Adams spent many years with Howard Shore, analyzing the themes of numerology in his score of Lord of the Rings movies, resulting in the book.

And that’s not all. The ‘tale of the tape,’ to use sports speak, is even more impressive.

When Symphony Silicon Valley performs the Lord of the Rings trilogy,  simultaneous to the films being shown on a huge screen, there will be 250 musicians on stage, made up of the orchestral instrumentalists, chorale members and children’s chorus.

These voices and musicians will be performing a total of 22 hours in a matter of  four days. That only leaves a few hours for eating and sleeping. This becomes a marathon for each of the 100 instrumentalists, the 100 adult vocalists, and the 50 members of the children’s chorus---not only a physical marathon, but a mental one as well.

The backdrop for the concert stage is a huge screen, 20 feet high and 48 feet wide, that will be showing the three Lord of the Rings movies in high definition.

Think of it: the sheet music alone…and this is just for the conductor…is 1200 pages, printed on 11-inch by 17-inch paper. Depending on the instrument, each musician receives several volumes of sheet music to study in advance.

“We will need a fork-lift to carry this music to the theatre,” said Andrew Bales, General Director of Symphony Silicon Valley. “These are the only West Coast performances of this epic event and our musicians are thrilled to bring it to you.”

Paolo’s Restaurant is even entering Middle Earth and the Lord of the Rings’ fandom. Just across the foot bridge from the Center for the Performing Arts, Paolo’s will have a Lord of the Rings three-course prix fixe menu for only $38.50, on April 16, 17 and 18. Paolo’s validates up to six hours of parking  in the RiverPark garage for their patrons. Paolo’s is located at 333 West San Carlos in downtown San Jose, and RiverPark Garage is between Park avenue and West San Carlos on Woz Way. Reservations are necessary by calling 408 294 2558 or visit www.paolos.com

*The Lord of the Rings films, directed by Peter Jackson and based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novels, have won 17 Academy Awards. The Symphony Silicon Valley, choruses and soloists will be on stage beneath and in front of the screen for these historic performances. Seats for each individual performance are available in a price range of $60, $90 or $120.

Lord of the Rings Cycle 1:
April 16, 2015 7:00 pm The Fellowship of the Ring
April 17, 2015 7:00 pm The Two Towers
April 18, 2015 7:00 pm The Return of the King

Lord of the Rings Cycle 2:

April 19, 2015 1:00 pm The Two Towers

The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts is located at 255 S. Almaden Blvd, San Jose, CA 95113.

These special performances are coming directly from Lincoln Center in New York, where they will be presented by a Swiss orchestra, with European musicians, the week before San Jose’s performances. (The New York performances are sold out.) Tickets for all three films in San Jose may still be purchased in a complete trilogy package at $330, $240 and $150.

San Jose Stage Company presents Tony-Nominated Power Play "Venus in Fur" by David Ives --- February 4 through March 1

San Jose, CA – January 12, 2015 – San Jose Stage Company presents David Ives’ Tony Nominated Venus in Fur, with previews on February 4, 5, 6, press opening February 7, and running through March 1, 2015.

David Ives’ new play Venus in Fur has received multi-awards, including Tony Nomination for Best Play (2012). The play was also made into a Roman Polanski film, which premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, also receiving multiple awards.

Venus in Fur is a sexy, provocative and funny. When young actress Vanda arrives several hours late to her audition for a play based upon the nineteenth century erotic novel by author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (the inspiration for the term Masochism), the playwright-director, Thomas Novachek, is less than impressed. But Vanda's masterful performance flips the script on Thomas' expectations and turns the session into a tango for dominance between actress and director, woman and man. Hailed as "seriously smart and very funny" by The New York Times, VENUS IN FUR is a laugh-out-loud study of the politics of sex and power. David Ives’ modern adaptation of Venus in Fur is perfectly suited to The Stage in this mesmerizing two-person drama within a drama.

“The Stage is committed to presenting new work that provokes, engages, and deepens our perspectives,” noted Artistic Director Randall King. “David Ives’ new play Venus in Fur turns up the heat and raises the stakes in the classic battle of the sexes, illuminating timeless issues around gender, status and power -- we expect the play to stimulate, open up and expand the conversation.”
