Spansion is Moving their Headquarters to San Jose

Spansion is a leader in Flash memory-based embedded solutions. Their products drive the development of faster and more energy efficient electronics. Currently they have 450 employees with a home-base in Sunnyvale. Their former 24.5-acre campus is being razed and turned into 250 homes.

Their new global headquarters will be in North San Jose at 1001 Ridder Park (124,000 SQFT) and 1717 Fox Drive (30,000 SQFT). This is yet another big lease to help us get the office market back to capacity in the North San Jose submarket.

  1. Mercury News is moving back to downtown on Second St.. Sofa market is opening around August. The downtown office vacancy will be below 10% in 90 days with the leasing of second Riverpark tower(6 floors to expanding existing company downtown).

  2. I hate to rain on the parade here, but I think you should discuss the closure and bankruptcy of the Rep Theatre (what a cultural tragedy for SJ) and, worse still, the impact of the closure on local businesses (I know some of the nicer restaurants really relied on the theatre crowd to help them stay afloat). What's your take? What's next for that part of Paseo?

    1. This is a huge loss. I don't have much information on this besides what was just published, this came as a surprise to me. I want to find out more before doing a post.

I'm hoping that someone like Nedelander (Broadway San Jose) will take over the space and continue utilizing it. In addition to theater, it may make a nice concert space as well. Heck, it could even be used as a movie theater (it has been a regular venue for Cinequest).

  3. Thanks, Josh. I, too, wish that it would continue to be a cultural space, but who knows. The loss of a Rep is really a terrible loss for civic culture and downtown dynamism.
