San Jose is getting a 24-story Tribute Hotel!

Finally, some significant vertical development news for Downtown. It looks like San Jose's first cantilevered tower will be moving forward. The proprietors behind San Jose's Downtown Four Points (which is probably the nicest Four Points in the US) want to build a 24-story hotel tower in a narrow lot to the right of the hotel. The lot is so narrow that the tower would have to cantilever over the Four Points as you can see in the photos below. It creates a very interesting architectural juxtaposition of a building from the 1910s merged with a modern high-rise.

Now for the even-better news. The 279-room tower will be branded as The Tribute Hotel San Jose as opposed to being an expansion of the Four Points-branded hotel. The Tribute is a new Marriott brand (which now owns Starwood Hotels) and it is far more upscale and prestigious.

The tower will have amenities that don't even exist in San Francisco or Los Angeles. I'm talking about a rooftop pool on the 24-floor. That is officially one of the coolest hotel amenities possible and I will be booking a room at some point just to take advantage of it. The Grand Hyatt in Toyko (hotel from the movie "Lost in Translation") is the only other property I have been to with something like that and it was awesome. The Tribute Hotel will also have their gym and meeting rooms on the penthouse floor featuring amazing views of Silicon Valley. This is going to be a very unique destination and a huge win for San Jose enthusiasts.

  1. Any good hotel is welcome. What we need is for the big lot next door to be built with a great hotel. A Ritz-Carlton would help the whole area and convention center. It would also make people stop laughing at San Jose maybe.

    1. When San Jose people stop laughing at their own city, and stop apologizing for it, that's when other people will stop laughing at SJ.

Let's support what we have, and strive for better things, but at no point should we apologize for where we live and love.

  2. Just one correction. The Hotel Nikko in San Francisco has a rooftop pool.

    1. I was about to correct the post, but it looks like the Nikko pool is on the roof of the podium much like the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose or Palace Hotel in San Francisco. It is not on top of the tower on the penthouse floor like what the Tribute Hotel San Jose is proposing.

  4. YAWN.... yet ANOTHER rectangular building in downtown. REALLY? The reason why we aren't getting better architecture is because we aren't expecting more from these developers! C'mon guys! Stop cheering on these horrendous boring designs!!!!

    1. Well, in Downtown's defense, our current crop of high-rises are good looking pieces--360, Axis, 88, Centerra, Silvery. 1SM is a bit below them, but has a very muscular presence along 1st/Market. Of the ones most likely to be built next, SJSC twin towers are certainly very good looking. The Julian tower is also very nifty looking.

We're definitely gonna get some clunkers along the way (Parkview and Graduates), so we just have to keep fighting for good aesthetics.

  5. Sorry guys but given the economics of buildings there's not too much you can do with the height limit in San Jose. Builders need to maximize the rentable space, so a box makes the most sense financially. At a 300 ft. limit it's not like you can put a spire on top. This particular building had to be cantilevered by 20 feet over the smaller building. Very tight space to work with on this project, so it's a miracle they can even get this done.

    1. C'mon now... you don't need a huge building to convey uniqueness and beauty. Take a look at The Pierce! Although it's not stellar its a step in the right direction!

    2. I agree to a certain extent with this sentiment, but it doesn't have to be a box of glass. Take a look at SJSC's twin towers project, with textured windows that move in and out, creating a beehive look that is very eye catching.

Or the Post Street tower, very similar in design as this one (both being slimmer buildings). And that one is very cool looking even though it's just a glass rectangle, but it's very well designed.

Silvery Towers is the same height as this, maybe even shorter, but its faceted face makes the buildings look unique.

I believe we can certainly do better than this design. That said, I won't be angry about this design if this happens to get built, as there are other bigger fishes to fry, like that empty parking lot next door.

  6. Looks like we are getting closer to breaking ground on this project! Hopefully Google is next with their Diridon project and the rest will fallow.
