15 Years of Holiday Traditions at Fiesta Navideña

The Mexican Heritage Plaza in East San Jose comes alive each December with lights, music, and community spirit for Fiesta Navideña. This year marks the 15th annual gathering on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm, with doors opening at 5:00 pm. Families and friends fill the space at 1700 Alum Rock Avenue to close out the year with free activities that highlight cultural roots and seasonal joy.

Carlos y Charlos take the stage for a free concert, delivering norteño and conjunto rhythms that echo through the Mayfair neighborhood. Their sound draws from legends like Los Alegres de Terán and Narciso Martinez, bringing energy that gets everyone moving. Alongside the music, Los Lupeños de San José perform folklórico dances, adding colorful motion and tradition to the evening.

Teatro Vision leads an interactive posada, inviting participants to join in a classic Mexican custom of hospitality and celebration. An art workshop welcomes all ages to create together, while local vendors sell handmade crafts and gifts. The scent of fresh tamales wafts through the air, rounding out the sensory experience.

Founded in 1999, the Mexican Heritage Plaza serves as a key cultural hub, hosting over 100,000 visitors annually through arts and events that strengthen community ties. Fiesta Navideña embodies this mission by uniting generations in a shared appreciation of heritage and resilience.

San Jose's 2026 Spotlight: Hosting the Super Bowl and World Cup

San Jose stands ready to welcome the world in 2026 with the Super Bowl and six FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium. This marks a historic moment as the first time any region hosts both events in the same year. Local leaders see this as an opportunity to showcase the city's vibrant energy, drawing visitors to explore Downtown San Jose's new restaurants and ongoing revitalization projects that connect its diverse districts.

The combined economic impact could exceed $1 billion, with the Super Bowl expected to attract 90,000 tourists and the World Cup bringing in 260,000 more. City officials aim to leverage this influx by creating activations around the events, such as culturally inspired concerts tied to participating countries. Businesses are encouraged to adapt, perhaps turning spots into fan headquarters for specific teams to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Tomorrow's World Cup draw on December 5 sets the stage for tailored experiences, revealing which nations will compete here and inspiring local plans. Beyond the stadium, the focus includes community events that offer Super Bowl or World Cup vibes without needing tickets, making the celebrations accessible to residents and visitors alike.

Team San Jose has introduced the San Jose 26 campaign to highlight hotels, dining, and attractions, paired with the Fly, Stay, Play initiative promoting the international airport as a gateway. This effort builds on the city's history of hosting major sports, from past Super Bowls to World Cup games, positioning San Jose as an emerging tourism destination for years ahead.

Empire Armadillo Debuts Today in San Jose with BBQ and Deli Fusion

Empire Armadillo officially opens its doors today at 878 Blossom Hill Road in the Santa Teresa Main Street Shopping Center. This new spot takes over the former Armadillo Willy’s location, blending Texas-style barbecue with New York deli classics to create a unique dining experience.

The menu highlights smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and house-made sides alongside deli offerings like pastrami, reuben, and french dip sandwiches. Seasonal specials add variety, including the Empire Stack with double meat portions and desserts such as homemade pumpkin cheesecake and banana pudding.

Retaining much of the original staff ensures continuity and a welcoming atmosphere rooted in the community. Empire Armadillo aims to serve as a gathering place for families, coworkers, and friends, emphasizing scratch-made food that honors both barbecue and deli traditions. Options for in-restaurant dining, free pickup, and catering make it versatile for any occasion.

Since opening in Sunnyvale, Empire Armadillo has earned rave reviews and guests love the quality, value, and personality the new ownership has brought to the brand. I'm sure the San Jose location will be a huge success as well. As a special incentive to come check them out today during the grand opening, the first 50 guests for lunch (starting at 11am) and first 50 for dinner (starting at 4:30pm) will get a free side.

San Jose Welcomes The Locker Room: A New Visitor Center Hub

San Jose is gearing up for the mid-December opening of The Locker Room, a new visitor center at 93 E. San Carlos St. This spot transforms a former print shop and pet adoption pop-up into a central resource for explorers and locals alike. With over 4,500 square feet, it stands ready to guide visitors through the city's offerings, especially as major events approach in 2026.

Inside, guests can find a merchandise store stocked with gear from local teams like the Sharks, Barracuda, Earthquakes, Bay FC, and San Jose State University Spartans. The space also includes a podcast studio available at no cost for creators highlighting San Jose's attractions and businesses. Multiple seating areas, a foosball table, and conference rooms add to the welcoming setup, while a program room seats up to 60 for gatherings.

Non-profit organizations focused on promoting San Jose or its events can reserve the meeting spaces without charge, simply by submitting a Google form to the staff from the San Jose Sports Authority. The center extends its reach with Decode San Jose kiosks and a touchscreen directory that cover activities across all 10 city districts, from art festivals to local celebrations, helping draw attention to diverse happenings.

San Jose State University hospitality students gain hands-on experience through internships at The Locker Room, applying classroom knowledge in real-world concierge roles, event management, and retail operations. Participants receive tuition assistance stipends for their shifts, building skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving while representing the city.

The timing aligns perfectly with upcoming spectacles at nearby Levi's Stadium, including Super Bowl LX and FIFA World Cup matches. San Jose hosts the NFC team at the Downtown Marriott, with practices at SJSU facilities, and NFL staff at local hotels. The Super Bowl's Opening Night at the McEnery Convention Center promises economic boosts, while World Cup bookings fill thousands of hotel rooms, channeling global excitement into the heart of San Jose.

The San Jose Nutcracker Brings Holiday Magic to Downtown

San Jose transforms into a festive wonderland this December with the return of The San Jose Nutcracker, a collaboration between New Ballet and Symphony San Jose. Choreographed by Dalia Rawson, this production reimagines the classic story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince against the backdrop of 1905 San Jose. Familiar landmarks like the historic Electric Light Tower rise in the scenery, while the second act celebrates the region's blossoming orchards that once earned it the name Valley of Heart’s Delight, nodding to the innovative spirit that defines the South Bay today.

Audiences can choose between the full-length ballet or the one-act My Very First Nutcracker, designed for families with young children. The shorter version runs about 55 minutes and focuses on the holiday party, magical gifts, and playful battles between mice and toy soldiers, all accompanied by live music from Symphony San Jose under conductor Thomas Shoebotham. Professional dancers from New Ballet, students from its certified training program, and performers from Los Lupeños Juvenil bring Tchaikovsky’s score to life at the elegant California Theatre in Downtown San Jose.

Pre-performance activities start an hour before each show, filling the lobby with holiday decorations, organ music, and chances to meet costumed characters in fairytale settings. Treats and toys add to the joy, making it a complete experience for all ages. This partnership with History San Jose weaves local heritage into the storytelling, inviting everyone to discover the city's rich past while enjoying a timeless tradition.

Whether attending a matinee or evening show from December 13 to 23, 2025, visitors contribute to San Jose's thriving arts scene. The California Theatre's location encourages exploring Downtown, with convenient parking options available.

Hillbrook School Debuts Permanent High School Campus in Downtown San Jose

San Jose has gained a new educational landmark as Hillbrook School opens its permanent high school campus in Downtown San Jose. Known for its JK-8 program in Los Gatos, the school now extends its innovative approach to older students in a vibrant urban setting. The new facilities at 227 N. First Street include classrooms, offices, and an arts and athletics center, creating a hub that blends learning with city life.

Students benefit from direct connections to the surrounding neighborhood. They visit City Hall to meet officials, collaborate with cultural organizations like MACLA for performing arts, and enjoy meals from nearby spots such as Hobee’s and Teske’s Germania. Partnerships with transitional housing facilities and easy access via public transit like VTA and Caltrain make the campus a seamless part of San Jose's community fabric.

For young learners transitioning from middle school, this Downtown location offers real-world opportunities. One student highlighted the draw of urban research programs, volunteer work, and partnerships that enrich daily education. The environment encourages hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences that prepare teens for broader horizons.

The campus revives historic structures, including the 1890s-era Moyer Building and a former National Guard Armory. These renovations, totaling around $20 million, preserve character while providing modern spaces filled with natural light and unique layouts. This effort highlights San Jose's commitment to sustainable redevelopment.

With 106 students enrolled and plans to grow to 250-300, Hillbrook focuses on deepening Downtown ties and expanding programs. Financial aid supports about one-third of families, ensuring diverse access to this community-centered education.

Waymo Launches Autonomous Rides at San Jose International Airport

The arrival of Waymo's autonomous vehicle service at Mineta San Jose International Airport marks a significant step forward for San Jose's transportation options, allowing passengers to hail self-driving rides directly from the airport. As the first commercial airport in California to offer this technology, San Jose positions itself at the forefront of modern mobility, potentially making travel more convenient and less expensive residents and visitors alike.

The service also connects San Jose with San Francisco through Bay Area freeways, opening up seamless access across the region. Initially focused on central areas like Santana Row and Westfield Valley Fair, Waymo plans to expand into Downtown San Jose and beyond in the coming months. This development aligns perfectly with the city's growth, enhancing connectivity for shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations.

Looking ahead to 2026, when San Jose hosts major events including Super Bowl 60, FIFA World Cup matches, and NCAA March Madness, the airport's role becomes even more crucial. Waymo provides a smooth, safe way for attendees to navigate the area, supporting the influx of visitors expected within a short radius of Downtown. Airport officials highlight how this integration reflects San Jose's efficient infrastructure and commitment to advanced transportation solutions.

While national surveys show that many drivers remain cautious about autonomous vehicles, with around 60 percent expressing fear, trust is steadily increasing. Recent data indicates a rise in confidence, from 9 percent to 13 percent over the past year, as people recognize the potential for improved traffic efficiency and safety. In San Jose, early adopters are already enthusiastic, viewing these rides as a practical enhancement to daily commutes and airport transfers.

I have taken a handful of Waymo rides over the years and the experience has gotten exceedingly better. I would actually pay a little more and wait a little longer for a Waymo verses Uber/Lyft, but they are actually already cost competitive with other rideshare options and in the long run will be much less expensive while providing more space and a privacy.
