Boosting Affordable Housing in San Jose: Housing Trust Launches New Grant Program

Housing Trust Silicon Valley just rolled out an exciting initiative called the Capital for Capacity Grant Program on June 11, 2025. This program is all about empowering community-based housing developers with grants of up to $50,000. The goal? To help them grow stronger, secure more funding, and build affordable housing that makes a real difference in the Bay Area, including right here in our city.

What makes this program stand out is how it tackles the challenges developers face head-on. These grants will support improvements in financial systems, staff skills, project management, and partnerships. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Housing Trust will work hand-in-hand with grantees to set goals, track progress, and even connect them with peers to share ideas. One of the lucky recipients is a San Jose gem: the School of Arts and Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza. This local favorite, alongside other Bay Area groups like Black Cultural Zone in East Oakland and The Unity Council in Oakland, will get the boost they need to bring more affordable homes to life.

Affordable housing is a hot topic, and this program means more chances for people to stay and thrive in our community. With support from First Citizens Bank, The Wells Fargo Foundation, U.S. Bank, and Chinatrust Banking Corporation, Housing Trust is laying the groundwork for a stronger, more inclusive Bay Area.

Magical Creatures Take Over Downtown San Jose

Get ready for something extraordinary at the 35th San Jose Jazz Summer Fest this August. Alongside the soulful sounds of jazz, blues, and global rhythms, Downtown San Jose will host eight massive Alebrijes sculptures. These fantastical, 20- to 22-foot-tall creations will pop up across the festival grounds and stay on display in and around Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park through September 28. Illuminated by vibrant LED lights, they’ll transform the city into a glowing wonderland each night, blending art and magic in a way you won’t want to miss.

Alebrijes carry a rich story. They began in the 1930s with Mexico City artist Pedro Linares López, who dreamed of wild, hybrid creatures and brought them to life with papier-mâché. Later, artisans in Oaxaca carved them from copal wood, painting them in bold, intricate designs. Today, these sculptures stand as a vibrant piece of Mexican heritage, and San Jose gets to experience them up close. Each piece features a QR code, letting you uncover the tales and artists behind these towering works, from a lion-bull mashup to a winged cat.

This exhibition has already wowed crowds in France and Paris back in 2019, and after a pandemic delay, it’s hitting the U.S. with San Jose as a highlight. The timing aligns perfectly with the Jazz Summer Fest, adding a stunning visual layer to the music. Even after the festival ends, free community events will keep the Alebrijes alive in Downtown San Jose, inviting everyone to connect with this unique art form. It’s a chance to see something rare and beautiful in the heart of our city.

ARRL Field Day in San Jose

Ham radio operators are preparing to take to the airwaves for ARRL Field Day, a nationwide event happening June 28-29. This annual showcase of amateur radio has been uniting enthusiasts since 1933, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for our community to witness the power of wireless communication (which was mostly invented in San Jose). The San Jose Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) will be out in full force, setting up temporary stations to demonstrate how ham radio connects people across borders and keeps communication alive when it’s needed most.

Head over to Noble Park at 3311 Noble Ave on Saturday from 11am to 7pm to see San Jose RACES in action. They’ll be showcasing their skills with portable setups, some powered by alternative energy sources like solar panels, batteries, and generators. Beyond the park, other local hams will be joining in from their homes and backyards. It’s a chance to meet operators of all ages—some as young as 9, others over 100.

With earthquakes and wildfires always a possibility here, ham radio operators stand ready to step up when cell towers and internet lines go down. These volunteers can set up a station almost anywhere in minutes, using a simple wire antenna and a power source to reach out and support the community. Events like Field Day highlight why San Jose is a place where innovation and resilience go hand in hand.

Sharks Way

San Jose has long cherished its sports teams, with the San Jose Sharks holding a special place in the city's heart since their debut in 1991. This hockey team has woven itself into the fabric of the Bay Area, delivering thrilling moments and fostering a deep sense of pride among fans. Now, the city is celebrating this legacy by renaming a prominent stretch near the SAP Center as Sharks Way, a tribute that strengthens the bond between the team and Downtown San Jose.

The timing of this change aligns with San Jose’s efforts to secure the Sharks’ future here. City leaders, including Mayor Matt Mahan, are nearing a 25-year agreement to keep the team rooted in San Jose, pending City Council approval. This long-term commitment underscores the Sharks’ value as more than just a sports franchise; they’re a cornerstone of community spirit. Sharks Way symbolizes that dedication, promising a lasting impact on the city’s identity.

You can find Sharks Way at the corner of West St. John Street and North Almaden Boulevard.

Tech Hub Rises from a Forgotten Site

At 199 Bassett Street, a location once earmarked for a sprawling affordable housing project, a fresh vision is taking shape. The original plan for 803 co-living residences fell apart in 2021 after a loan default led to foreclosure in 2022. Now, that same site is poised to become a cutting-edge tech hub—an eight-story "AI Research and Development Facility" that could redefine the area.

The new building will feature a lively ground floor with two lobbies and 2,800 square feet of retail space, while the upper levels are designed to support the heavy data demands of artificial intelligence and tech innovation. Led by Bay Area real estate executive Dennis Randall, this initiative taps into the city’s strengths and promises to draw more companies, talent, and energy to Silicon Valley’s core.

The shift from housing to high-tech reflects San Jose’s dynamic priorities. While affordable homes remain a critical need, this tech hub leans into the city’s role as a global leader in innovation, especially in AI.

Sumi Sushi's commitment to affordability without compromising on quality is a standout feature. Owner Terry Tien's vision for the restaurant is clear: to provide the local community and visitors with high-quality Japanese cuisine that doesn't break the bank. This mission is a refreshing take in a market where good sushi often comes with a hefty price tag.

The restaurant aims to challenge the notion that excellent sushi must be expensive, making it accessible to a broader audience. This approach not only caters to sushi enthusiasts but also invites newcomers to explore Japanese cuisine without financial hesitation. The menu promises a variety of dishes that reflect traditional Japanese flavors, crafted with care and authenticity.

Owner Terry Tien's connection to Downtown San Jose is deeply personal. He views the area as a vibrant community with a unique blend of heart and brain, reflecting his genuine appreciation for the city's character and its people. Tien's decision to open Sumi Sushi here is not just a business choice but a testament to his belief in the area's potential and charm. His enthusiasm for being part of Downtown San Jose's growth and vibrancy is evident, and it sets a positive tone for the restaurant's role in the community. San Jose Takes a Big Step Forward with New Affordable Housing Projects

Great news for San Jose residents! The County Board of Supervisors has just approved nearly $29 million in funding for five new affordable housing projects right here in our city. This is a huge win for our community, especially for those who have been struggling to find affordable places to live. All five of these developments will be built in San Jose, bringing much-needed housing options to our neighborhoods and showing that our city is serious about supporting everyone who calls it home.

These projects will add a total of 612 units to San Jose’s affordable housing supply, offering both rental and ownership opportunities. The funding comes largely through Measure A, a $950 million bond that voters approved back in 2016 to tackle housing challenges. These new homes are designed for families, seniors, veterans, and other vulnerable residents, ensuring safe and stable places to live. In total, the County has committed $48.2 million to these efforts, with $38.7 million directly from Measure A, proving just how vital this initiative is for our region.

San Jose has faced a tough housing affordability crisis for years, with high costs making it hard for many to settle down. But thanks to moves like this, we’re seeing real progress. Measure A is paving the way for change, and these latest projects are a clear sign that our city is on the right track.

Think about what affordable housing means for our community. A stable home can improve health, help kids do better in school, and give families the security they need to build a future. These developments are investments in San Jose’s people, creating opportunities for a better life right where we live.

With these projects taking shape, San Jose is moving closer to being a place where everyone can find a home. Want to get involved? Head to the County’s website to learn more or connect with local groups championing affordable housing in San Jose.

Brunch Blooms in Downtown San Jose

Reza Manion, the mastermind behind the beloved Bloom Eatery brunch spot in Santa Clara, is bringing his vision to 225 W. Santa Clara St., with an anticipated opening later this year. This expansion marks a new chapter for Bloom, a restaurant that’s been winning hearts since its debut in 2020, and it’s a sign of exciting things brewing in the city’s core.

Manion’s journey into the restaurant world started early, shaped by his upbringing in his family’s café, Sara’s Kitchen, a Santa Clara staple for over three decades. That experience fueled his dream of creating his own space, and Bloom Eatery was born. The Santa Clara location quickly gained a following for its standout dishes like croissant French toast and chicken and waffles. Now, Downtown San Jose gets to experience that same magic, with a 4,000-square-foot space that Manion describes as perfect thanks to its natural light and lack of brunch competition nearby.

The move to Downtown wasn’t Manion’s first instinct—he initially leaned toward smaller towns like Campbell or Los Gatos. But when a real estate opportunity arose, he saw the potential for Bloom to shine in an area he believes is on the upswing. Challenges like parking and Downtown’s reputation don’t faze him; instead, he’s eager to contribute to the area’s growth. With the interior build-out underway and permits in progress, he’s aiming to open by late summer or early fall, setting the stage for a cozy brunch haven just before the holiday rush.

What makes Bloom special is its commitment to keeping things simple yet exceptional. The menu stays focused, letting the quality of the food and the care in its presentation take center stage. Whether it’s the flaky layers of croissant French toast or the crispy perfection of chicken and waffles, freshness is key. Manion wants Bloom to feel like a neighborhood gem—approachable, elegant, and rooted in community.

Celebrate the Return of Tostadas Downtown San Jose!

After a fire and flood shut its doors in 2023, this local gem is back, ready to welcome the community with open arms. A relaunch event and ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Matt Mahan and the East Village San Jose business association took place last Saturday.

Tostadas isn’t your average brunch spot. Since opening in June 2019, siblings Alex and Victor Garcia have turned heads with their creative take on brunch, swapping out toast spreads for Mexican-style tostadas. Their Downtown location quickly became a favorite, sparking growth with additional spots in Midtown (1699 W. San Carlos Street), Campbell (200 E. Hamilton Ave), and Santa Clara (3149 Mission College Blvd), where they’ve even ventured into fine dining with Tostadas Prime. The Garcia siblings also fuel the local scene with Con Azucar Cafe and the brand-new Astroid Burgers and Wings, right next door to Tostadas Downtown. Their next move? Franchising these San Jose-born brands to share our city’s flavors far and wide.

Nestled in the East Village San Jose business corridor—a 16-block stretch along East Santa Clara Street—Tostadas adds to a vibrant area known for its diverse dining options. From vegetarian delights like Vegetarian House and Tofoo Com Chay to the energy of local initiatives enhancing the corridor, this part of town reflects San Jose’s dynamic character. The reopening shines a light on how small businesses, backed by community support and city leaders, keep our neighborhoods thriving.

Tostadas is located at 304 E. Santa Clara Street, Suite A. and is open from 9am-10pm Mondays through Thursdays, 9am-11pm on Fridays, 8am-11pm on Saturdays, and 8am-10pm on Sundays.

Autonomous vehicles bring the promise of safer roads, smoother commutes, and greater accessibility—solutions that a growing city like San Jose can truly benefit from. It’s an exciting time to witness our city embrace a development that will shape urban life for years to come.

With the company already operating in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, San Jose joins an exclusive league of places leading the charge in autonomous tech. Add to that the recent approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles for Waymo to test on our public streets, and it’s clear San Jose is becoming a proving ground for the next big ideas in mobility. San Jose has always been a place that looks ahead, and with Waymo now part of our community, we’re driving toward a future full of possibility.

Downtown San Jose Adding New Entertainment Zones

The city has greenlit a plan to designate specific areas where outdoor events can flow freely with food, drinks, and fun. Examples include live music, street festivals, and casual gatherings under the open sky.

These entertainment zones will take root in some of Downtown’s most beloved spots: San Pedro Square, the SoFA District, and Plaza de Cesar Chavez. These areas already have a special charm, but with the new rules, they’re poised to become hubs of even more activity. The city’s goal is clear—make Downtown a place where people want to hang out, grab a drink, and soak in the energy of a revitalized urban core.

The timing couldn’t be better. San Jose is already looking ahead to big moments like the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where these zones could host massive watch parties with fans cheering together in the streets. City leaders, including Mayor Matt Mahan and District 3 Councilmember Carl Salas, see this as a way to elevate San Jose’s profile, blending its tech-savvy spirit with a laid-back, social vibe that’s distinctly Californian.

What’s really exciting is how this move opens the door for more than just one-off events. By loosening restrictions, San Jose is creating a foundation for businesses to thrive and for the community to come together in new ways. Whether it’s a weekend market, an impromptu concert, or a casual night out, these zones promise to inject life into Downtown.

Bitterbuck: A Fresh Twist in Downtown San Jose’s Bar Scene

Cache Bouren has been shaping Downtown San Jose’s bar scene for over 15 years. His journey started with Singlebarrel in 2010, a craft cocktail lounge that set the stage for what would become Haberdasher in 2015. Both spots earned loyal followings for their creativity and charm. Now, Bouren is ready to unveil his latest venture, Bitterbuck, in the emerging Fountain Alley district.

What sets Bitterbuck apart is its dual personality. By day, it’s a haven for coffee lovers, featuring pour-overs crafted with a Poursteady machine from Brooklyn. This automated setup, capable of brewing up to five cups at once with a robotic spout for precision, reflects Bouren’s obsession with quality coffee. As night falls, the space transforms into a cocktail lounge, spotlighting sparkling wines, bitter liqueurs, and amaro-driven drinks. It’s a concept that bridges morning and evening crowds, common in Europe but offering a fresh take on what a Downtown San Jose hangout can be.

The location in Fountain Alley feels like a perfect fit. This pocket of Downtown is on the rise, part of a larger wave of revitalization bringing new energy to the area. Bitterbuck joins this momentum. Bouren has a knack for spotting what’s missing in the market, and with amaro gaining traction, his timing couldn’t be better.

Santana Row’s Levare Apartments Sold to Global Firm Hines

Santana Row, one of San Jose’s most iconic mixed-use developments, has just witnessed a major transaction. The Levare apartment building, a 108-unit complex within Santana Row, was recently sold to an affiliate of Hines, a global real estate firm.

The deal, valued at approximately $74 million, marks a strategic move by Federal Realty Trust, the developer and primary owner of Santana Row. San Jose: The Hotspot for New Grad Hiring and AI Innovation

San Jose is carving out its place as a leader among U.S. cities, topping the charts for new graduate hiring growth. Data from Gusto, a payroll and management software company, shows a remarkable 13.1% rise in the city’s new grad hiring rate from April 2024 to March 2025.

What’s fueling this surge? A sharp focus on AI is driving both hiring and salary increases across the Bay Area, with San Jose at the forefront. New grads here are seeing starting salaries climb by 7.6% year-over-year, reaching an average of $91,453 as of March 2025. Compare that to the national average of $61,996, and it’s easy to see why San Jose stands out. While hiring for new graduates has dipped nationally—down 16% from 2024 and expected to drop 44% from 2022 levels by mid-2025—San Jose is defying the trend, alongside neighbor San Francisco, thanks to its deep roots in tech innovation.

San Jose State University (SJSU) is a big part of this story. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, SJSU is equipping students with the skills to thrive in an AI-driven future. From specialized AI courses to hands-on projects and internships, students are immersed in cutting-edge tech—some even contributing to city initiatives. Partnerships with industry giants like Nvidia and Adobe further amplify these opportunities, creating a direct pipeline from classroom to career. This synergy between education and industry is a key reason San Jose continues to lead.

Beyond the numbers, San Jose offers something unique: a front-row seat to the tech revolution. The city’s position in Silicon Valley means innovation is everywhere, especially in AI. Local businesses using generative AI report higher satisfaction with their hires, which speeds up recruitment and boosts the workforce. For new grads, this translates to not just jobs, but careers with real impact and paychecks to match.

The Boring Company's ZPIT Innovation: A Game-Changer for San Jose's Infrastructure

The Boring Company's recent milestone in achieving continuous mining in a Zero-People-in-Tunnel (ZPIT) configuration is set to revolutionize urban infrastructure, and San Jose stands to gain significantly from this advancement. This breakthrough allows for simultaneous tunnel advancement and ring erection without human presence inside the machine, except for a videographer. Each ring, weighing approximately 24,000 pounds, is constructed efficiently, promising safer, faster, and more cost-effective tunneling. For a city like San Jose, which is constantly evolving and expanding, this technology could be a game-changer.

San Jose's ongoing efforts to enhance its public transportation system, particularly the BART extension to Downtown San Jose, could be accelerated with ZPIT technology. The city's commitment to improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion aligns perfectly with The Boring Company's innovations. By leveraging this technology, San Jose could see a rapid expansion of its underground transportation network, making it easier for residents and visitors to navigate the city. This would not only improve daily commutes but also support the city's economic growth by attracting more businesses and talent.

The focus on subterranean technology by The Boring Company complements San Jose's vision of a multi-layered transportation network. This approach could alleviate the persistent issue of surface traffic congestion in the Silicon Valley area by utilizing underground tunnels for both passenger and freight transport. The expansion of such networks would be crucial as San Jose continues to grow, accommodating a larger population and increased economic activities. This innovation could position San Jose as a leader in sustainable urban development, setting a precedent for other cities to follow.

Moreover, the ZPIT configuration's emphasis on safety and efficiency could influence other infrastructure projects in San Jose. Utility tunnels and stormwater management systems, which are essential for the city's resilience, could benefit from reduced risks and costs associated with traditional tunneling methods. This technology could make large-scale projects more feasible, ensuring that San Jose remains at the forefront of infrastructure development. The city's ongoing revitalization efforts in Downtown San Jose, including the Downtown West project by Google, could be further enhanced by these advancements.
