San Jose’s Hot Pot Scene Heats Up with Mumu’s Arrival

San Jose just gained a new reason to gather around the table with the opening of Mumu Hot Pot at Westfield Oakridge. The new restaurant already started welcoming guests this week at 925 Blossom Hill Road, Suite 1515. This is Mumu’s sixth Bay Area location—joining spots in San Francisco, Foster City, Sunnyvale, Pleasanton, and Emeryville.

Mumu stands out with its hands-on approach to dining. You start by picking a soup base—maybe the fiery Sichuan, the earthy mushroom miso, or the warm tomato option—then layer in premium ingredients like Angus beef short rib, sliced lamb shoulder, or shrimp paste. Add Napa cabbage, enoki mushrooms, or winter melon, and you’ve got a meal tailored to your taste. Vegetarians and halal diners aren’t left out either, with plenty of options to keep everyone satisfied. The modern space, decked out with natural materials and seating that works for solo lunches or big groups, makes it a spot worth lingering in.

Beyond the food, Mumu nails the details. An easy-to-use ordering system keeps things moving, while a drink menu with tea-based beverages, draft beer, and cocktails pairs perfectly with the bold flavors simmering in your pot. With over 200 seats, it’s ready for anything from a quiet dinner to a full-on celebration. Alex Hu, the Director of Operations, shared that San Jose’s diverse community and lively energy made it an ideal fit for Mumu’s next chapter. It’s a place designed to bring people together, and it’s landing right where it belongs.

Ready to check it out? Mumu Hot Pot at Westfield Oakridge opens daily from 11:30am–2:30pm and 5:00pm–9:30pm. Swing by 925 Blossom Hill Road, Suite 1515, and keep an eye out for launch promotions dropping soon. For more details, head to www.mumuhotpot.com.

Tech Hub Rises from a Forgotten Site

At 199 Bassett Street, a location once earmarked for a sprawling affordable housing project, a fresh vision is taking shape. The original plan for 803 co-living residences fell apart in 2021 after a loan default led to foreclosure in 2022. Now, that same site is poised to become a cutting-edge tech hub—an eight-story "AI Research and Development Facility" that could redefine the area.

The new building will feature a lively ground floor with two lobbies and 2,800 square feet of retail space, while the upper levels are designed to support the heavy data demands of artificial intelligence and tech innovation. Led by Bay Area real estate executive Dennis Randall, this initiative taps into the city’s strengths and promises to draw more companies, talent, and energy to Silicon Valley’s core.

The shift from housing to high-tech reflects San Jose’s dynamic priorities. While affordable homes remain a critical need, this tech hub leans into the city’s role as a global leader in innovation, especially in AI.

Celebrate Portuguese Culture at San Jose’s Dia de Portugal Festival 2025

Organized by the Portuguese Heritage Society of California, this event stands as one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the state. It’s a gathering that unites people from across the community to honor Portugal’s national day and revel in the traditions of the local Portuguese population. Be sure to save the date—June 14, 2025—when the festival returns to History San José for a day packed with food, music, and joy.

The festival ties into Dia de Portugal, celebrated on June 10th, which marks the legacy of Luís de Camões, a poet whose work captures the essence of Portuguese history. What started as a modest "Spring Festival" has evolved into a major San Jose tradition, held annually on the second Saturday in June. This event doesn’t just celebrate Portugal—it also embraces the wider Lusophone world, including places like Macau and Brazil.

When you step into the Dia de Portugal Festival, you’re greeted by an array of sensory delights. Traditional Portuguese foods like caldo verde, bifanas, and pastéis de nata fill the air with tempting aromas. Live music and dance performances bring energy and rhythm, while a colorful parade rolls through with eye-catching costumes and floats. Families can explore the Portuguese Historical Museum at History San José to dig into the community’s local roots. It’s an all-ages affair that promises something memorable for everyone.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 14, 2025, at History San José, located at 1650 Senter Road. Entry is free, and parking won’t be a hassle—there’s plenty available, including free spots with shuttle service from nearby areas. Keep an eye out for street signs pointing you to the right spots.

This festival is a window into the warmth of Portuguese heritage and a celebration of San Jose’s diverse identity. It’s an invitation to connect with the local Portuguese community and help preserve their traditions for years to come. See you there!

The Vibrant World of SJ Walls

SJ Walls is a week-long public art festival where streets are transformed into an open-air gallery.  Take the Guadalupe River Art Walk, for example—it’s growing with new installations that turn a simple trail into a vibrant corridor of murals. These artworks, inspired by the native habitat along the Guadalupe River Trail, connect people with both nature and creativity. Artists like Roan Victor and Kristina Micotti have contributed stunning pieces that brighten the area and strengthen community ties. These were part of the 2024 festival.

Through the Artist in Residency (AIR) program, world-class talent comes to San Jose, leaving behind murals that inspire resilience and spark inspiration. Beyond the visual art, SJ Walls hosts musical gatherings and educational programming, ensuring art is something everyone can experience. In Downtown San Jose, these efforts help create a sense of place and pride that resonates with residents and visitors alike.

As San Jose continues to grow, SJ Walls plays a vital role in shaping its identity. The initiative turns everyday spaces into sources of wonder, fostering a city where creativity thrives. SJ Walls 2025 runs until June 8th. To see which new murals are in progress, follow SJ Walls on Instagram.
