Scott's Social Club: Elevating Networking in Downtown San Jose

Scott's Social Club will perched on the seventh-floor rooftop at 88 South Fourth Street. This private club steps in to address the gap created by the closure of the Silicon Valley Capital Club earlier this year, offering a space where entrepreneurs, business leaders, and elected officials can gather. The opening mixer on October 15 marks the start, inviting members to enjoy stunning views while building relationships that drive the city's economy forward. With membership starting at $150 per month and options for young professionals, corporate groups, and nonprofits, the club makes networking accessible in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Regular events form the core of the experience, including mixers held twice a month featuring local wineries, distilleries, and breweries. A monthly dining event adds variety, complemented by perks such as discounts at Scott's Seafood and validated parking. Organizers plan to expand benefits through partnerships, potentially including deals at golf courses and spots in the Las Vegas area. This setup encourages meaningful interactions, helping members forge deals and collaborations that strengthen San Jose's innovative community.

Four specialized councils focus on young professionals, LGBTQ individuals, women, and business interests, allowing tailored programming and events. A share of membership dues supports local nonprofits, providing them platforms to connect with potential donors. Already, over 200 people have signed up for the first mixer, with early memberships reaching about 30 shortly after launch. The goal of 250 members reflects confidence in the club's role within Downtown San Jose..

Agrihood Evolves: Townhomes Set to Enhance Sustainable Living Near San Jose

Santa Clara Agrihood - Steinberg Hart
Santa Clara Agrihood - Steinberg Hart

The Agrihood development in Santa Clara continues to adapt with plans for 44 for-sale townhomes at 1816 Worthington Circle, replacing an earlier concept for a 160-unit apartment building. This change reflects responses to economic shifts like higher interest rates and construction costs that emerged after the pandemic. The Core Companies aims to keep the project moving forward by focusing on ownership opportunities that align with the community's needs. Located near Westfield Valley Fair Mall, this site sits on the edge of San Jose, offering a fresh way for people to experience integrated urban farming and modern housing in Silicon Valley.

The first phase of Agrihood opened in 2023 with 165 affordable apartments for seniors, complete with a 1.7-acre urban farm open to residents and neighbors. This setup promotes healthy living through access to fresh produce and communal spaces that encourage interaction. The new townhome proposal builds on that foundation, featuring five three-story buildings designed to maintain the walkable layout and farm integration. Such features make the area appealing for those seeking a balance between city convenience and natural elements, drawing more families and professionals to the region.

As of late September 2025, the project remains under review by the City of Santa Clara, with permits submitted starting in June. Pending approval, construction could begin later this year, filling a vacant parcel and adding to the housing options available.

American Airlines Ramps Up for Super Bowl LX at San Jose International Airport

San Jose Mineta International Airport prepares for a major influx as American Airlines announces an expansion of operations by up to 450 percent ahead of Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. The stadium sits less than a 10-minute drive from the airport, making it a convenient entry point for fans traveling from across the country. This boost includes eight new routes connecting San Jose to key cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York JFK, Charlotte, and Miami. Such enhancements position the airport as a vital gateway, drawing visitors to experience the excitement of the big game while showcasing the region's accessibility.

Flight frequencies vary by route during the peak period from February 5 to 10, with options like seven daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth and multiple connections to Chicago and Phoenix. This setup accommodates the surge in demand, ensuring smooth travel for attendees. As the fourth-largest carrier at the airport, serving half a million passengers in 2023, American Airlines builds on its presence behind Delta, Alaska, and Southwest. The move aligns with San Jose's growing role in hosting major events, inviting more people to discover the area's blend of sports, technology, and community energy.

Besides location, recent developments at the airport also boost its appeal. That includes the introduction of Waymo robotaxis, being the first in California to offer such services for rideshares. Dave's Hot Chicken Adds Heat to San Jose's Village Oaks Neighborhood

Dave's Hot Chicken is now open at 5670 Cottle Road inside the Village Oaks Shopping Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 26 featured remarks from Councilmember Pamela Campos, celebrating the third location in the city alongside spots on Brokaw Road in North San Jose and Prospect Road in West San Jose. This Nashville-style spicy fried chicken franchise, which began in a Los Angeles parking lot in 2017, has grown into the nation's fastest-expanding chain, bringing bold flavors to local diners.

Local owners Sam and Trina Wong, who raised their four children in the Evergreen area, bring a personal touch to the venture. Sam graduated from Gunderson High School in 1988 after immigrating to the United States in 1983 and settling in the Blossom Hill area. The couple worked in fast food and retail as teenagers nearby, making this ownership a long-held aspiration. The Village Oaks area has seen significant growth with new restaurants, shops, and businesses, and the Wongs aim to contribute through community involvement, including partnerships with schools, youth sports, and various organizations for fundraising.

The city's support extends beyond the opening, with funding for a new Business Improvement District in Village Oaks. This special district allows business owners to pool resources for enhancements like street cleaning, security, and marketing to draw more visitors and boost economic activity. San Jose has added two such districts in the past year for the Monterey and Tully business neighborhoods, with plans for four more in the coming months covering The Alameda, Story Road, East Village, and Alum Rock/Santa Clara Street corridors.

Looking ahead, the new location hosts events like a Free Slider Giveaway on October 23, alongside ongoing efforts to create jobs and participate in local charity initiatives.

El Paseo de Saratoga Rises: Transforming San Jose's Landscape

Construction has started at at El Paseo de Saratoga, a major redevelopment turning a dated shopping center into a vibrant mixed-use community. Located along Saratoga Avenue and Lawrence Expressway near Westgate Center, this 10-acre site once held surface parking, big box stores, and an office building. Now, crews have begun demolition to make way for modern apartments, senior living facilities, and retail spaces that promise to enhance daily life for residents.

The project includes 772 apartments spread across two high-rise buildings, with the tallest reaching 12 stories and housing 398 units alongside 14,140 square feet of retail. A second 10-story structure adds 374 apartments and 17,450 square feet of ground-level shops. Complementing these is a seven-story senior care facility with 263 beds, designed to support comfortable living for older adults. A single-story Whole Foods grocery store anchors the commercial side, ensuring convenient access to fresh goods right in the neighborhood.

Thoughtful design elements elevate the development, such as floor-to-ceiling windows in the apartment towers accented by white metal panels, and balconies with brick veneer on the senior building. Public courtyards, landscaped pathways, and a park along Quito Road create inviting outdoor spaces for gatherings and relaxation. These features blend urban convenience with green areas, fostering a sense of community in southwest San Jose.

With amended plans approved by the city in December 2024, the transformation is well underway, though groundbreaking details remain forthcoming. Full construction will span nearly four years, ultimately replacing underused land with a dynamic urban village. Projects like this highlight San Jose's forward momentum, drawing more people to experience the city's blend of innovation and livability.

Sand Hill Property Company leads the effort in partnership with Holland Partners and Sunrise Senior Living, with architecture from Solomon Cordwell Buenz for the apartments and Lantz Boggio Architects for the senior facility.

Hillbrook School Revitalizes Historic Downtown San Jose with New Campus

Hillbrook School, a 90-year-old institution from Los Gatos now in its third year offering high school, recently opened a renovated classroom building in Downtown San Jose at 227 North First Street. The three-story Moir building from 1894 features brick and sandstone construction, a large skylight that floods the interior with natural light, and bay windows that add character. Originally designed as a work-live space with businesses on the ground floor and residences above, it later served as a hotel and most recently housed a law firm. By choosing to restore this historic site near St. James Park instead of constructing something new, the school invests in the city's heritage while creating modern learning environments.

The decision to locate in Downtown San Jose aligns with Hillbrook's vision of using the city as an extended classroom, providing students with real-world experiences amid urban surroundings. Alongside the Moir building, the school transformed the old San Jose Armory on North Second Street into additional facilities, including maker spaces, art studios, and a gym. These renovations preserve the exteriors' classic appeal while updating interiors for contemporary use, promoting sustainability through reuse. The combined 70,000 square feet of space will keep these areas active for years, benefiting both education and the community.

Hillbrook has already integrated into the neighborhood by hosting events like National Night Out for nearby residents and partnering with local spots such as Hobee's restaurant for student meals. This approach fosters connections and vitality in Downtown San Jose. M

Meanwhile, Bellarmine College Prep dedicated its Wade Academic Center, a 43,000-square-foot facility with 21 classrooms, a courtyard, and offices, honoring the school's upcoming 175th anniversary. Named after Rev. Gerald Wade and his family with deep local roots, the center reflects a commitment to history, as the school relocated the 109-year-old Berchmans Hall for repurposing rather than demolition.

CityView Plaza Evolves: Demolition Paves Way for Downtown San Jose's Next Chapter

Demolition work at CityView Plaza has officially begun, where crews have cleared a nearly two-acre site at 185 Park Avenue for an eight-story parking garage and retail hub known as The Shops at CityView. This phase transforms a former commercial campus at Park Avenue and Almaden Boulevard, replacing outdated structures like a bank branch, parking garage, and office building with modern amenities. The new garage will provide 1,135 spaces to support nearby offices and future residents, while 35,000 square feet of ground-floor shops add vitality to the street level.

Architectural highlights include a perforated metal facade with vertical fins for visual interest, and floor-to-ceiling windows for the retail spaces overlooking landscaped sidewalks. Nearby, renovations at 150 South Almaden Boulevard upgrade a 15-story office tower with a refreshed lobby, conference center, and fitness facilities spanning 204,000 square feet. Adaptive reuse efforts convert existing buildings into housing, such as 145 units at 100 West San Fernando Street, 22 at 130 South Almaden Boulevard, and 163 at 125 South Market Street, blending preservation with contemporary living.

Phase two brings even more ambition with The Tower at CityView, a 27-story high-rise at 121 South Market Street set to offer 360 apartments from studios to three-bedroom penthouses, rising 293 feet. Renderings show pedestrian-friendly designs, internal pathways, and green spaces that connect the campus. Led by Jay Paul Company with designs from DES Architects + Engineers and Solomon Cordwell Buenz, the project emphasizes connectivity near light rail and future BART stations.

With the site now fully leveled after starting demolition in April, construction on The Shops could wrap in about 24 months following recent plan amendments.

Breaking Ground on The Fielden: Affordable Housing Takes Root in San Jose's Alum Rock Neighborhood

Construction has started on a new 160-unit affordable housing complex at 525 North Capitol Avenue in San Jose's Alum Rock area. Known as The Fielden, this five-story development replaces earlier plans for an office building. The project, led by Community Development Partners, marks their first venture in San Jose and stands as their most expensive to date, with a total cost of $123 million. Funding comes from multiple sources, including $8 million from Santa Clara County through the Measure A Affordable Housing Bond and a $26 million loan from the city of San Jose, which owns the site.

The Fielden will feature a variety of studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments spread across a one-acre lot, totaling about 42,000 square feet. Among these, 52 units are set aside for individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness, homeless veterans, or those with disabilities, emphasizing support for vulnerable community members. Its location offers convenient access to the VTA light rail, making it easier for residents to connect with jobs, services, and other parts of the city. Completion is slated for June 2027, promising to add much-needed housing options in a growing urban landscape.

Community Development Partners is exploring a collaboration with local nonprofit Veggielution, which could involve a shared kitchen space in the building to promote community activities around food and farming. This initiative aligns with San Jose's efforts to build smarter and more inclusively, focusing on vertical growth to accommodate more people without sprawling into surrounding natural areas.

Empire Armadillo BBQ & Deli Set to Carry On Armadillo Willy's Legacy

A beloved Silicon Valley barbecue tradition finds new life through the passion of a local engineer. John A. Vink, a longtime fan of Armadillo Willy's chicken sandwich, stepped in to purchase the bankrupt chain and relaunch it as Empire Armadillo BBQ & Deli. The concept soft opened in Sunnyvale this August, preserving the essence of the original while introducing New York-style deli elements to fill a gap in the local dining landscape.

The menu at Empire Armadillo keeps all the classic Armadillo Willy's items, from wood-fired barbecue to signature sides, while expanding with pastrami sandwiches and house-made banana pudding inspired by renowned New York spots. This fusion of Texas barbecue and East Coast deli creates a unique offering that caters to diverse tastes. The Sunnyvale location at 161 East El Camino Real has already welcomed back dedicated customers, and the entire staff consists of former Armadillo Willy's employees, maintaining continuity and expertise.

Plans are underway to bring Empire Armadillo to San Jose, taking over the former Armadillo Willy's site at 878 Blossom Hill Road. This expansion promises to revitalize a familiar spot in the city, providing a convenient destination for barbecue enthusiasts and deli lovers alike. San Jose's growing food scene gains another layer with this blend of traditions, inviting families and friends to gather over hearty meals.

The venture highlights the community's resilience, as Vink's investment saves jobs and keeps a 42-year-old legacy alive. Longtime patrons have expressed gratitude for the revival. With a grand opening in Sunnyvale scheduled for September 18, the momentum builds toward the San Jose launch.

San Jose Opens Innovative Safe Sleeping Site to Combat Homelessness

San Jose takes a meaningful step forward in addressing unsheltered homelessness with the launch of its first safe sleeping site, the inaugural one in the South Bay. This initiative provides 56 tents equipped with cots, on-site security, regular trash collection, three daily meals, mobile showers, and access to counseling and addiction treatment. Modeled after successful programs in other cities, it offers a low-barrier alternative to unmanaged encampments, improving conditions for individuals while benefiting the broader community and environment.

The site's cost-effectiveness stands out, coming in at less than one-twentieth the expense of building an apartment per unit, and it can be established in just months. This efficiency allows San Jose to scale solutions quickly for the over 3,000 people living in unmanaged conditions, where around 200 fatalities occur annually on the streets. Alongside this, ongoing efforts at Columbus Park involve relocating about 10 people daily into housing while clearing debris, demonstrating steady progress in restoring public spaces.

From a 16 percent sheltered rate in 2020, San Jose aims to reach 50 percent by year's end, meaning half of the nearly 6,000 homeless residents will have a bed each night, along with services and personalized plans for self-sufficiency. This milestone reflects the city's commitment to pragmatic approaches like interim housing and requiring acceptance of available shelter, reducing encampments and fostering pathways out of homelessness.

Looking ahead, achieving full sheltering requires creativity, including expanded interim options and support from higher government levels for funding, housing construction, and specialized treatment facilities. San Jose's embrace of innovation in local government paves the way for these advancements, creating a more compassionate and resilient community.

Groundbreaking for Aquino Apartments Marks a New Chapter in Downtown San Jose Housing

Construction has officially started on the Aquino apartment complex, an eight-story development bringing 278 new units to Downtown San Jose at 498 West San Carlos Street. Developer Urban Catalyst led the groundbreaking ceremony on September 4, marking a significant step toward addressing the city's pressing housing needs. This project transforms a once-vacant corner at West San Carlos and Josefa streets, previously occupied by outdated structures like an office building and an autobody shop, into a modern residential hub.

The Aquino features a traditional apartment layout, shifting from an earlier co-living design to offer more units in compact sizes. With a total cost of $135 million, the development secured a $112 million loan from Beach Point Capital and benefited from San Jose's multifamily housing incentive program, which provides fee and tax reductions to encourage building. This support helped push the project forward, aligning with the city's goal to add over 60,000 housing units by 2031. Among the 278 units, 14 are deed-restricted for affordable housing, contributing to inclusive growth.

Positioned near Google's planned Downtown West campus and Diridon Station, Aquino enhances connectivity and vitality in the area. It neighbors other Urban Catalyst projects, including the completed Keystone Marriott TownePlace Suites hotel and a site slated for additional housing. This infill development promotes shorter commutes and a sustainable environment, fostering a community where residents can thrive amid Silicon Valley's innovation.

San Jose's recent pace of housing production, with about 1,500 units completed last year and 1,300 the year before, falls short of demand, making projects like Aquino essential. City leaders recognize the need to streamline processes and reduce bureaucracy to compete with faster-building cities like Austin and Denver. By prioritizing smart development, San Jose sets an example for California, starting with initiatives that make housing more feasible.

The Aquino stands as a symbol of progress, inviting families, professionals, and newcomers to experience Downtown San Jose's evolving landscape. Residents will enjoy proximity to transit, amenities, and the city's cultural offerings, from nearby parks to bustling markets. This addition strengthens the neighborhood fabric, creating opportunities for vibrant living in the heart of the South Bay.
